There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Tits, can you do red and white? Thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 17:36

A lovely 12 inch granny square, or solid granny be absolutely fabulous for this project seaweed. I think I will go for one of those. Do you have any of the stylecraft yarn?

StandsOnGoldenSands · 09/05/2014 17:38

I would like to do this! I am a complete newbie to woolly hugs though. Happy to buy the yarn, am a knitter. Can someone give me some guidelines too?

Iamaslummymummy · 09/05/2014 17:39

I'll do one of these

GleamingHeels · 09/05/2014 17:39

I'm in, and I have Stylecraft I can use

ComfyLeatherChair · 09/05/2014 17:40

I'll do some squares. Please may I have some style craft? I don't actually have any (don't tell anyone!) Do you need my address or do you have it from cathpips hug?
Couldn't read your op aloud to my Mum for crying.

Opheliabumps · 09/05/2014 17:41

How big do the completed hugs need to be? My mum has just made a few hugs for me to send to you, if any are big enough I'm happy to use a completed one for this project.

They just need a quick wash, as she smokes and I can smell it on the hugs, so I want to freshen them up.

I should also be able to do some 12" squares for this one, and have most of the attic24 colours.

Do you need help with constructing the hugs?

roguepixie · 09/05/2014 17:44

Not sure what stylecraft colours I have but bound to have something suitable...will get knitting.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 17:49

Ophelia That is immensely kind and we will take you up on your construction offer bless your heart. They have to arrive at the Leeds address by July 25th.

Minimum size for a solo Little Hug would be 48" but ideally more.

Comfy I can find your address, thank you.

Slummy and Gleaming - you stars, thank you

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 17:51

Thank you Ophelia too for your squares! Thanks

GoldenSands Have a look at Wool Warehouse or Deramores for the yarn. Then if knitting, ideal patterns would be not too lacy, need to be fairly sturdy iyswim?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 17:53

And welcome on board, very glad to have you here too.

For those joining us - do find us on Facebook MNWoollyHugs and Twitter @MNWoollyHugs - both good ways of keeping in touch too.

Thanks

Thanks Rather! Can I knit plain squares or should I aim for some kind of fancy stitch, stripes, etc?
I will get an order in (any partic colours preferred, other than the ones to avoid?) and then get in touch for postal details etc.

PiggyPlumPie · 09/05/2014 17:59

I'll do a square - have wool but not sure what colour. Smile

Fabulous cause!

seaweedhead · 09/05/2014 18:03

I don't have any Stylecraft yarn but was planning to order some other stuff from wool warehouse so will add some to my basket.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 18:08

GoldenSands We are big fans of stripes! Bright and bold, always super!

Pastels be lovely Woolfey - do use what you have. Thank you.

Thanks Piggy - whatever you make will be lovely, and thanks SeaWeed enjoy choosing.

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

I have just started a square, tis in aster and sherbet, going to be a gorgeous granny :)

And tis Friday so am thinking Wine this too.

StandsOnGoldenSands · 09/05/2014 18:12

Ok great, bright and bold it is! Looking forward to getting started on this ...

Opheliabumps · 09/05/2014 18:12

Argh, Mum's biggest hug is 42", it'll take a while to add enough rounds to take it up to 48. I might just stick with a couple of 12" squares instead and use the 42" one for a Billie's blanket instead.

Is there a deadline for Cathpip yet, so I can work out my priorities please?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 18:14

Just this mo agreed that with Knots - to be June 14th too.

Primrose123 · 09/05/2014 18:16

I'd love to help. Would you be able to send me some wool? :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 18:16

Thanks lovely Ophelia - we'd love her hugs for Billie's we don't want to affect that project, we're trying to run everything alongside each other. Last posting for the Billie's will be Wednesday 4th June.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2014 18:16

Certainly Primrose Thank you so much Thanks

Allalonenow · 09/05/2014 18:17

I'd be glad to join in and knit a couple of squares.
Would it be possible to send me some yarn please?

Wine chin chin Pistey!

KnottyAndPistey · 09/05/2014 18:19
