There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

I need to take the 3 layers of hem up on DD's prom dress, so have sewn in pesky ends and my panels are in the posting bag. Will parcel it up and get to post office some time in the next week.
Thank you ilove, it has been a pleasure to be a part of this project. I do hope your feet are better soon and you are able to get as much rest and activity as you physically need to for optimal recovery. Mend well in other words. Flowers

Pistey bahahaha!

Nice news about Debbie Bliss. :)

How're you feeling today ilove? For you Brew & Cake

YeGods thank God my days of prom alterations are over! And I've still not made a complete bobble square ... Blush

Think I have made full use of MN's emoticons etc here ...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/05/2014 14:11

Hang on, instead of running, why not Bike ?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 29/05/2014 14:12

TenMinutes You forgot the glass of slow gin! Wine

ilove · 29/05/2014 14:27

Aww bless you all! I have finally got my foot/feet "up" after a morning of housework and making lunch for 6. I'm taking the kids to Alton Towers tomorrow on tesco points, so if you see me hobbling on crutches and with a start trek foot come say hello!

TenMinutesToLanding · 29/05/2014 15:10

Grin at Pistey and YeGods! Where did the Bike come from? Is this a Tour de France thing?

Or a timely reminder for me to get off my fat arse and do some exercise? My running shoes have been in the boot of the car for over a year Pistey! I was thinking of hiring a treadmill for a couple of months to get me going again before I inflict my flab on the general public. Has anyone hired one before? Sorry for the derail ilove. Hope the weather improves for Alton Towers tomorrow, it's vile up here at the moment. Gie dreich as my granny would've said.

And yes to sloe gin - I've got some lurking in the fridge somewhere. Now that's the kind of timely reminders I like!

PastaandCheese · 29/05/2014 15:18

I posted them yesterday second class! How does that work? I shall look at it as an unexpected bargain.

tenminutes mine have been in hiding for a year........ I was pregnant for 9 months of that but that isn't an excuse as I exercised through my first pregnancy. I just ate Biscuit through this one and it shows.

How about we both agree to dust them off this weekend? I don't care about the general public. In my head I am the female Mo Farrah and the best bit about pounding the pavements is there are no mirrors to remind me I actually look like a tomato.

PurpleFrog · 29/05/2014 15:34

PastaandCheese and tomato... Mmmm! Grin

ilove · 29/05/2014 15:44

My foot!

PastaandCheese · 29/05/2014 15:48

Have fun ilove there are lots of places you can sit at Alton Towers for a rest.

PurpleFrog you're making me hungry. The banana I've just eaten is not going to last until the DCs are in bed and I can have my dinner!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/05/2014 15:53

We actually have Mo Farah training round these parts, tis terribly off putting when you slog along only to be overtaken by this speeding bullet.

PastaandCheese · 29/05/2014 16:40

He probably isn't very good at knitting and crocheting though?!

Dutchoma · 29/05/2014 17:09

Pasta that is you looking like a tomato with a baby looking like a potato? Quite the little veg garden your lot Grin

PastaandCheese · 29/05/2014 17:55

Oh yes! He gets his looks from DH obviously Grin

TenMinutesToLanding · 29/05/2014 18:59

Grin Pasta! I'm more like a butternut squash. Roasted.

Will look in the boot and see if said trainers have decomposed from lack of use. Tomorrow. Maybe. Wink

No running for you ilove, lots of breaks tomorrow for you - watching the local news here (an hour from AT), and she says cloudy, mild and possibly dry at times.

Pistey Envy of Mo chasing you like a coyote.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 29/05/2014 19:29

You could ask Mo if he'd like us to crochet him anything, next time he's passing, Pistey!

PastaandCheese · 29/05/2014 19:56

What do you think he'd like yegods?

Perhaps a crochet lanyard for his sunglasses? Or some knitted wrist bands?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 29/05/2014 20:52

We could all just crochet all kinds of wierd and wonderful stuff for Pistey to yarn bomb his entire running route. Although that's going to be a long way now he's doing marathons.
Perhaps he would like something with gofaster stripes. Grin

TenMinutesToLanding · 29/05/2014 21:02

Can we not just yarn bomb Mo?! In leftover Stylecraft? Grin

PastaandCheese · 29/05/2014 21:24

'Yarn bombing Mo Farah is a delightful way to use up scraps of yarn in one's stash'
