There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Posted!

Although my son decided to be helpful (he's obsessed by my knitting) I told him I was going to sort the wiggly ends and when I came back Into the room he was busily snipping then all off with scissors! Hopefully they're useable still, everything is thankfully still in tact.

He has a portacath that when in use has a wiggly end that they snip to length for comfort. I didn't think. BlushConfused

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/05/2014 10:58

Awwwww, bless him!

Morning everyone, just away to PMs Thanks

Oma that is looking awesome! You star! Thanks

Yegods Seven is fantastic! Thanks We need 20 twelve inch squares per blanket, tis such a lot, and we have no idea really how many we will get until they actually arrive iyswim? So if you can do more, then yes please. x

Knotty and I have spoken about squares, and we agreed that if we do end up with extra we will make them into a Billie's Blanket for an older child, as it seems the most appropriate use of them. Hope everyone agrees with that.

Rightyho, PMs here I come Brew

Dutchoma · 28/05/2014 11:27

Hang on, Pistey, I thought you said 16 12" squares per blanket, 48" x 48". At present 'my' blanket is 12 squares of 12", assembled into 3 x 4.

I can do 4 more and make 4 x 4 or 8 more and make it into 5 x 4 which would be more of a single bed size. What would you like? Time allows and supply is handy.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/05/2014 11:43

Ah, yes, our minimum is going to be a 4 by 4, but if we can get some to a 5 by 4 that is probably a good thing for the age of the children. Bigger gives more flexibility. Tis absolutely up to you lovely Oma - we can send more woolly wool if you decide to go on.

Thank you so much xx

Dutchoma · 28/05/2014 11:54

It's so very easy to get more woolly wool locally and I begrudge the post office its money. I will see how quickly the next three squares happen and then make a decision about getting more stuff.

I'm on the case, WIP....

Completely off-topic but vital info

HOW DO YOU GET FREE CAKE IN JOHN LEWIS???

Pasta any tips?

pantshavenames · 28/05/2014 13:20

Tea and cake sounds good woollybackswife. I'm not very up to date on the best cafe- maybe you do Dutchoma?
Pinkforboys that is lovely.
Mine went in post today.

PastaandCheese · 28/05/2014 14:06

watchingout do you mean to tell me you don't have a 'My John Lewis' card???????!!!!!!!

I'm declaring a state of emergency if you don't.......

Sign up and they send you a voucher for a FREE CAKE AND CUP OF TEA every month of the year.

It isn't just an undersized cake of no use to anyone past about 18 months either. You can choose any cake you like.

I know I'm going to sound like the worst mother in the world now but last month I waited until DD was on a nursery day, walked around the shop until the newborn was asleep and then stuffed my face with free cake in the blissful peace of the cafe in term time.

PastaandCheese · 28/05/2014 14:09

Oh, in non cake related news I posted my squares this morning.

Dutchoma · 28/05/2014 14:28

I thought maybe meet at the bus station at 1.00 pm and then mooch over to Debenhams? Or a tad further but no steps at All Saints Church where they have nice sofas, tea and cake? No John Lewis alas and Waitrose is too far to benefit from their free tea or coffee.

ilove · 28/05/2014 14:34

You're all such stars, thankyou so much.

I'm having a bugger of a time at the moment as I have my own kids plus foster kids here, so feeing ten for the last month, and I'm in a HUGE plastic aircast boot and on crutches because I have a suspected broken foot (finally had MRI last night) so I am soooooooooooo slooooooooowwwwwww doing anything right now.

I have squares to post to you Pistey as soon as I can actually get out of the house

PastaandCheese · 28/05/2014 14:42

Dear me ilove that sounds like an incredible amount of work.

How long will you be off your feet? Not long I hope?

ilove · 28/05/2014 14:48

I did whatever I did to my foot back in Feb, and have a horrible feeling I'm going to be on crutches right through the summer while I have the children here - if I need an op I will have to postpone it till they leave at the end of August

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/05/2014 16:41

You poor thing, how frustrating Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/05/2014 16:43

You are stars xx

My squares are ready to go!

A knitted one in purple and blue and a very wobbly multi-coloured granny square. It's the biggest crochet I've ever done - hope you can wiggle it into shape!

Will probably have to post on Friday as I'm going on DD2s school trip tomorrow. A trip to the theatre with 30 9 year olds (help!)

TenMinutesToLanding · 28/05/2014 21:40

Pink that is beautiful! I can't knit for toffee.

PisteyandKnotty - I'm on granny number 10 but I still need to sew the peskies in before I post them to you. Unless of course you'd like me to post them avec peskies?

Grin

And calamitous news. I'm running out of Stylecraft!

Am I posting to you Pistey? Might still have your address from Easter stuff.

TenMinutesToLanding · 28/05/2014 21:42

Poor ilove, Thanks for you. Get well soon, you must be shattered.
