There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Anyaaaaaaa! Sew those peskies in!

We hate em too. Hence the term 'peskies' Grin

KnottyLocks · 14/05/2014 19:55

Blimey, Pasta. You on the gin already? Grin

mejon · 14/05/2014 19:55

Thank you ria - I'll have go with 60 to begin with as my moss stitch is quite stretchy and I think it's easier to pull it to size rather than make one that's too big.

AnyaKnowIt · 14/05/2014 19:56

I did some then got bored so did another square

YellowStripe · 14/05/2014 20:30

Ilove have you chased up your order? I placed mine yday and just got an email this evening saying it's dispatched.

Dutchoma · 14/05/2014 21:06

With moss stitch I always have an odd number of stitches, so you can always begin with the same stitch.

ilove · 14/05/2014 21:07

Looks like they dispatched it tonight, finally :)

PastaandCheese · 14/05/2014 21:24

It's Wine and sleep depravation knotty.

PastaandCheese · 14/05/2014 21:25

And I stand by what I said. It is satisfying looking at my pile of three squares.

mejon · 14/05/2014 21:25

Thanks for the tip Dutchoma - I'm not very good at this knitting lark (took me 18m to knit DD2's cardigan!) so I'm very much trial and error - I'm ok once I get going though.

BelleOfTheBoys · 14/05/2014 22:30

Do you still need people? I'm on maternity leave so I'm a) skint and b) bored, so if someone can send me yarn, I can knit? I'm fast and I've done two WH squares in the past?

BelleOfTheBoys · 14/05/2014 22:31

I used to be BelleEtLaBaby but blooming Heartbleed stole my name :(

RiaOverTheRainbow · 14/05/2014 23:18

My big granny is coming out shorter across the middle than at the edge . I assume you'd prefer 12" edges? (That's 18 rounds for me, if it makes a difference).

KnottyLocks · 15/05/2014 07:45

Belle, PM Pistey and we'll get some yarn to you. Thanks Smile

Ria, as these blankets will be babette style, you could add rows on the shorter sides of your 'square' to even it out to 12".

WoolPixie · 15/05/2014 08:05

Pistey did you get my pm from a couple days ago re more yarn? Managed to get 2 and 3/4 squares out of the woolly wool you kindly sent, am 2 rounds short, it's driving me crazy!

Can you send me a little more to go with purple (looks like lavender on the Wool Warehouse site) or a lot more and I'll do some more 12 inchers - they're strangely satisfying Grin

Thanks and sorry to be so needy Blush

KnottyLocks · 15/05/2014 08:13

WoolPixie · 15/05/2014 10:42

YellowStripe · 15/05/2014 15:49

Oh my word - how exciting is it to come home to a parcel of wool! My first delivery from wool warehouse - just waiting for a 4mm hook to arrive tomorrow cos I forgot to order one with the wool Smile cannot wait to get started!

JulesJules · 15/05/2014 16:00

Grin Pasta

Am waiting for my first delivery from wool warehouse. I might do something a bit stripey...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2014 16:47

I luffs stripes!

Afternoon :) Brew

PMs - here I come....

ilove · 16/05/2014 10:24

My wool arrived, but I am now struggling in an air boot and on crutches, so everything is taking me ten times as long as usual. Thoroughly fedded upped

Titsalinabumsquash · 16/05/2014 10:49

I've done one in Lipstick colour with 2 thin blue stripes running through it.

I'm off glamping tomorrow so I plan to sit by the fire in the evening and do some more.

RiverRocks · 16/05/2014 14:10

Ooh err, got a bit overexcited and just ordered 20 balls of wool... I don't even get chance to hook very often... Blush

I mis-read upthread and thought someone said that it takes 2 balls for 1 square, not 1 ball for 2 squares. I usually only do 4" squares!

I hope you have lots of projects that use this brand Confused xx

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 16/05/2014 15:42

Oh yes! You could make a Billies Blanket, RiverRocks! Grin

PurpleFrog · 16/05/2014 15:53

... or a Little Hug, RiverRocks! Grin
