There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Go Pistey!! Go HOOKERS!

Did you say a date for last posting to you? I'm on Granny No. 5, will check my stocks to see if I've got enough to do some more.

Allalonenow · 13/05/2014 18:21

My lovely wool has arrived, a soft lichen green and a rich berry, thank you so much, I will get busy with my needles clicking away!

I secretly worry that hookers have more fun than us knitters Smile

ShoeJunkie · 13/05/2014 18:38

Waiting for my wool - getting excited!

PastaandCheese · 13/05/2014 18:57

Am on my 2nd panel

Very bright!

pettyprudence · 13/05/2014 21:13

My wool arrived today - cream, denim, pomegranate and navy. Obvs the navy isn't bright but I am hoping to use it to make the others look bright? Is that ok?

TenMinutesToLanding · 13/05/2014 21:25

Thanks Knotty!

Tarlia · 13/05/2014 21:49

Wow, that's a lot. Just keep hooking hooking...

I've done a 12" and 8.5 6"ers so far. I plan to do twelve 6", would you like me to make them into 3x12" or send them loose so you can fill in/make a stripe at top or bottom of blankets etc?

StandsOnGoldenSands · 13/05/2014 21:55

Gosh some people knit/crochet fast - I have performance anxiety now.
My colours arrived today - lovely sunny yellow and pink shades. Will put down the Christmas jumper I've been working on (yes really!) and get cracking.

Oooo Tarlia decisions, decisions! Thank you so much, think we'd prefer them attached into fours if possible.

Thank you

Thanks
YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 14/05/2014 09:21

I love that pic for the hookers! I had a postcard of the soviet 'you can do it' postcard on my wall for years growing up and at uni. [fondly remembers]

I think I might print that off and frame it. Grin

First bobbly stripey square took a whole day. Tis now wrapped ready to get posted, should get to you early next week.

I am thinking of contacting my local Chernobyl's children project and asking if they have anything like this going on this year or plans for next year. I can't provide a room but would be great to support them in this way.

JulesJules · 14/05/2014 12:08

Just seen this, signing in!

12 inches you say

mejon · 14/05/2014 14:07

My wool arrived this morning - huge thank you. It is the most gorgeous shade of red called 'lipstick'. I hope I can do it justice.

Sorry if I'm repeating a question, but generally how many stitches should I be casting on if I'm going to knit a moss-stitch square?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 14/05/2014 14:16

mejon For a 12" square at average tension you'd need 66 stitches, but if you're not sure cast on 20 or so and knit a couple of inches to check your tension.

AnyaKnowIt · 14/05/2014 16:01

I hate doing peskies Sad
Can't I just send undone? Grin

ShoeJunkie · 14/05/2014 18:13

Think my wool arrived today but I wasn't in Sad will have to stop at the post office on my way to work tomorrow.

ilove · 14/05/2014 19:08

Still waiting for my wool to arrive, WW hasn't even posted it yet

PastaandCheese · 14/05/2014 19:53
