I am afraid we bring very sad news. We heard recently that our SupermansBigRedBottleOfSpirits’ third child, beautiful baby Summer has died at nearly twelve weeks of age. Bless them all, such a devastating loss, we are so very sorry. Superman’s thread is here.

She and her family are in our hearts and thoughts, and we send them love. We are so pleased that they have accepted our offer of a Woolly Hug, there will be love for them all in every stitch. We hope it may give whatever comfort it can.

So lovely donors, knitters and crocheters, we will need help to make this happen, and will be so grateful if you can join with us. Thanks

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert are equally welcomed. It really is the love and thought that counts.

Thanks

Superman and her family have been thinking about their blanket and have come up with some lovely ideas for baby Summer. Bless them all.

Ideas for squares or separate embellishments :

Summery flowers - inc chrysanthemums
Butterflies.
Ladybirds
Lions

If you are able to offer initials, please PM.

Just from the brands listed below please because we know they combine for wash and wear.

  • Drops Merino Extra Fine DK (new this time)
  • Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK (new this time)
  • Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK ?* Artesano Superwash Merino DK
  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (is being discontinued but some still around)

Superman’s family have requested bright and vibrant colours as they say these best reflect their beautiful daughter so....

  • Pinks (not pale)
  • Warm purples
  • Brighter greens
  • Creams - if using please use Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK WM4 ‘cream’ or Debbie Bliss Rialto 02 ‘ecru’

For accents/embellishments on squares, not whole squares pls :

  • Red but please only use Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK WM06 “Ruby”
  • Yellow for flower centres only
  • Turquoise.

?Do use the crafting guide on the website to help you with lots of practical info such as help with buying colours, recommended online retailers and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for patterns.

Previous blankets can be seen on the Woolly Hugs website and we are on Facebook and Twitter at MNWoollyHugs which are good ways to keep in touch.

This means so much to the family, thank you so much for joining with us

Thanks

Pistey and Knotty

Ok, I'm going to do a deep purple square with a cream flower, deep pink centre and light green leaves, does that sound good? Or have you got something similar already?

RuldolfsFlea · 13/12/2013 05:32

Joining in to do a couple of squares for Superman. Terriblely sad for her.

Will send you a pM pistey.

I've got lovely apple green wool that I've made a very woolly basket weave square out of and it's used just a smidge over half the ball.
Would you prefer I squeezed in another of the same square or used it to make some woolly leaves to go with other crafters' flower embellishments?

Oh, I think you'll know what I mean. [woolly headed] Thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/12/2013 18:54

Funnily enough I do! Smile Leaves please, they would be smashing, thank you Thanks

Beautiful woolly treasure has been arriving, just so lovely, huge thanks to the crafters for all their love and care.

I've nearly finished a simple (well, simple to a good knitter; I've always struggled with it) moss stitch square. Strands of the yarn have broken in a couple of places so there are some ends to tuck in, will it matter?

Am thinking a crochet square of some kind for the next one. Total novice at crochet so again will be pretty simple, hope that's OK and they're good enough!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/12/2013 09:53

It will be absolutely fine, huge thanks to you Thanks Have just replied to your PM.

Simple squares made with love are very precious indeed!

Thanks

Just a thought, and v probably one that's already been had, but has anyone asked a yarn shop like Deramore's or maybe Wool Warehouse (Drops stockists) if they might support the Woolly Hugs? Maybe discounts, or a few free balls of yarn or similar if details added to the WH website or similar? I know the point is that MNers help MNers, but making the donations go a bit further might be worthwhile?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/12/2013 17:14

It is a very good thought silver, but it is one that has been had before.

Both of those two said no, so did John Lewis and Cucumberpatch. Debbie Bliss was fab, and actually after last week has promised us some more, whether it is the stuff we use for woolly hug big blankets is to be seen, but it will certainly come in somewhere.

Fingers and Thumbs, sadly don't think they are in business anymore sold us some at a reduced price and Yarn Box and Black Sheep Wools were very kind too.

So bless Debbie Bliss, she has been a real friend to Woolly Hugs, and love the fact she follows us on Facebook and Twitter. Just makes us when she 'likes' a photo!

Xmas Smile

Mumsnetters helping Mumsnetters is at the heart of what we do but now we do more away from the site, with the ongoing projects we run as well it has been easier to ask for donations.

OP posts:
Jacksmania · 16/12/2013 20:04

Right, the square is done, and the parts of the flower are done. Now to sew it all together. Hopefully I'll be able to post it off this week.

Dutchoma · 16/12/2013 21:19

Did you manage to get the squares from the post office?

MNPlovesChristmas · 17/12/2013 00:27

Ordered loads of jW on Dec 03, 2nd class, proposed delivery date........18 Dec Confused so glad to read it is Jan 06 posting date....phew.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 17/12/2013 00:41

I remember when Summer was born, what a tragic loss.Sad

can someone tell me how I could donate money towards this project please?
I'm a quilter, but can't knit so I thought I'd like to help out by funding some of the wool that goes into the blanket.
Please let me know what to do - PM is fine.

And may I offer my total admiration for the amazing work and dedication and skill that goes into making these Woolly Hug blankets and the love which makes them extra warm and comforting!
Thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/12/2013 12:25
