Following on from the terrible news of the loss of Mumof2TeenBoys' ds, a new Woolly Hugs project has been started and, as ever, MNers have stepped up to offer whatever little comfort we can to Mumof and her family. We also keep close in our thoughts Aillidh, the dd of expatinscotland, who died yesterday.

We've put together some general info mostly about knitting but with some crochet bits thrown in, which should get you started but please feel free to ask for any help - I'm not sure if the crocheters are going to set up a new support thread but their current one is found here.

Please dive in - we will inevitably end up talking bollocks rubbish at some point but all are welcome aboard.

I'm sure we can blame blondes - not sure she knows which end of a knitting needle to hold although she certainly knows her way around a cork screw

MinnieBar · 31/07/2012 16:32

Just checking in... my planned 'day to myself knitting' didn't pan out as I've come down with tonsilitis (boooo) so I spent most of my time in bed today (although I did manage to file my tax return in between ).

I tried crochet last week. My wool-hand little-and-the-one-next-to-it fingers cramped up in minutes. My tension went from good, to loose, to 'too tight to get the hook through'. My attempt at rows looked like a rhombus - no idea how I dropped stitches.

I think I will stick to knitting....

LackaDAISYcal · 31/07/2012 16:58

Trib, just realised I didn't reply to you...too busy battling with my tricksy cables/increases/decreases! I finally won and the finished square is rather lovely. I'll try and upload a pic so my lovely donor can see what I did with the yarn :)

I'm now trying to figure out how I can turn a square around a crochet 5 point star Confused

droitwichmummy · 31/07/2012 17:42

Thank you neither

No idea why that posted twice???

MinnieBar · 01/08/2012 14:24

I thought I had a challenge for you this time Trib. But then I realised that I could just a) knit a smaller square and b) knit a shorter i-cord. And it'll all be fine.

Assuming I can knit an i-cord that is...

tribpot · 01/08/2012 18:09

Oh, that's cute Minnie!

And yes, you can knit an icord. The 'i' is for idiot, you know .. (that's really true, not me being mean).

OP posts:
TeamGlaikitBritain · 01/08/2012 18:48

I can do icord! Proof the I stands for idiot :o

TeamGlaikitBritain · 01/08/2012 19:31

Ok quick knitting sort of question. Tis my birthday next week. I'm 21!

The girls at work have asked if I would like a knitting book from them. Which is closely, but they want me to tell them which one! So which one should I ask for? I've had a look at the ones on the blanket guide and the all look similar!

TeamGlaikitBritain · 01/08/2012 19:31

Closely? Lovely!

tribpot · 01/08/2012 19:33

Right well let's start with which ones do you already have, Glaikit? Or is the answer 'none of them'?

OP posts:
TeamGlaikitBritain · 01/08/2012 19:36

That is correct Trib, none!

tribpot · 01/08/2012 19:39

If you have a look in my library on Rav that'll get you started, I'm playing catch-up at work (well, at home) as I bunked off to the Royal Armouries this avo!

OP posts:
TeamGlaikitBritain · 01/08/2012 20:02

Ok. The 200 knitted blocks doesn't get the best reviews on amazon, so do you think a stitch library would be better? I can't follow charts very well, so would prefer written patterns. Knitting for dummies? Argh!

In better news, mum took the hint and I'm getting the knit pro set!

soremummy · 01/08/2012 22:56

Oh. No not the cubics ones I have told my lot not to get them cos they keep breaking on me!!! I had a weird feeling they where gonna get set for my birthday on Saturday. Might just be me though that breaks them. I'm off to bed my dad would have been 80 today and it's a whole (long yr) since my dh had a tumour removed from his lung I'm in limbo at the minute and mum died 2.5 mths ago roll on sept 4th final results from ct then I hope!
