We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

It looks tiny when you first cast on. Keep knitting a few rows and it will be 6 inches.

PippiL · 28/02/2012 11:29

Kayzr, hate to say it but you might need to knit up 3 or 4 rows before you can identify the actual length. Just the cast on row won't be an accurate measurement.

Then if the length is out after your few rows you haven't lost much time and can always pull it all back and start again.

Meet up link, all welcome - knitters, crocheters and donors Thanks

Kayzr · 28/02/2012 11:45

Yay it appears to be 6 inches!!!

Smugfearnleyshittingstool · 28/02/2012 11:55

So sad. I can knit a few squares, would appreciate wool if anyone has spare.

PurplePidjin · 28/02/2012 12:04

Send a pm to RatherBeOnThePiste Thanks she'll match you with someone

AllTheSevens · 28/02/2012 12:14

I've just done a plain practice square with some DK I had- when I cast on I was panicking as 33 stitches just didn't look wide enough, but I ploughed on and it did actually measure 6 inches wide.

Just hope I can produce something decent when my wool arrives.

Big thanks to the generous donors of wool.

LinzerTorte · 28/02/2012 12:32

SoupDragon I ordered a pink and a purple to be sent to my knitter, but only ordered yesterday morning - not sure whether it would have arrived that quickly.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 28/02/2012 12:36

What sad news. I'd certainly like to contribute this time. Missed the last few blankets but I think subconsiously reading the old threads was what made me start knitting again.

I'm happy to get my own wool so I guess I don't need to PM Pistey until I'm ready to send my squares?

What are the best recommendations for online purchases? I think I've used Cucumberpatch before and they were good. Anywhere else?

KnottyLocks · 28/02/2012 12:36

Linzer, if you ordered via Cucumberpatch it's a possiblity.

SoupDragon · 28/02/2012 12:40

Could be, Linzer :)

I'm sure the organisational brains behind this enterprise knows anyway.

SoupDragon · 28/02/2012 12:41

If they were sent to someone whose surname is a word, that's probably me!

Kayzr · 28/02/2012 12:42

I ordered from Cucumberpatch Sunday evening and got my wool this morning. They are very efficient! Grin

LinzerTorte · 28/02/2012 13:04

Sounds like it probably is you I sent to, SoupDragon. Smile Not sure if you saw my name and address, but my first name is probably the only pronounceable bit of it (if you live in England, at any rate). Grin Cucumberpatch certainly are very efficient.

WhoremoaneeGrainger · 28/02/2012 13:13

Tnank you to my wonderful donoron this blanket. My wool arrived this morning, a beautiful soft lilac and a gorgeous off white/cream. Thank you so much, whoever you are (and i would love to know?) to be able to thank you "personally".

Thought I might try this^^ what do people think?

Pick of my first attempt now on profile

PippiL · 28/02/2012 13:38

Love them!

Methe · 28/02/2012 13:40

Anyone have any idea how many links in the foundation chain for 6" of crochet?

My practice run last night didn't go so well Blush

PippiL · 28/02/2012 13:40

Think I'm going to try a teddy bear. Don't think I will manage a care bear as such, but a teddy should be fairly simple.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/02/2012 13:41

Wine Lunchtime!

Sorting to do Grin

Maybe best swap the Wine for a Brew then?

TimeForCake · 28/02/2012 13:42

You're not alone!! I haven't started mine yet but I find it easier to just measure rather than count?

TimeForCake · 28/02/2012 13:42

^^ That was to Methe by the way

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 28/02/2012 13:43

knitters are you all casting on the 33 stitches or is anyone knitting diagonally?

I've done squares before for the Guides, years and years ago, but we always knitted them from corner to corner.

PippiL · 28/02/2012 13:45

Diagonal would look lovely. Would be a nice contrast.

Blatherskite · 28/02/2012 13:51

My wool has arrived. It's a lovely pale, dusky pink. Will get it reposted to my crafter this afternoon
