I've just heard the sad news about Magic8ballhasstheanswers leaving 6mo twins and a 4yo Sad

If anybody would like to show their condolences, post here and we'll organise it. I'll take on construction again unless someone else would like a turn?

IvySedai (who messaged me to let me know) is happy to co-ordinate so PM's from Donors and Crafters needing a match to her please.

Previous squares were 6", knitted or crocheted. Blues, pinks and purples were the most popular colours. Debbie Bliss Cashmerino or Rowan Cashsoft DK (links are just the first ones I found on google) It's also available in John Lewis.

Lastly, was there anything in particular that Magic liked and could be incorporated in the design?

Oh no :( I can't believe it - it's so sad. Lots of love to those of you who knew her and especially to her family - those poor girls & A.

purplepidjin · 18/08/2011 20:02

is a pretty crochet butterfly could be attached to a 6" Granny?

I did one that was basically, start your Granny square, ch 5, dc in space, ch 4, dc in space, ch4, dc in space, ch 5, dc in space - by now you should be back at the beginning. Then 10tc in ch 5, dc in dc, 8tc in ch 4, dc in dc, 8tc in ch 4, dc in dc, 10tc in ch 5, dc in dc. Ch 6, dc in 2nd from hook and along, sl st, ch 6, dc in 2nd from hook and along, finish off.

Then you attach a different colour in a space on your granny square (which is also the body of your butterfly) and carry on as normal avoiding wings Wink

I've emailed IvgSedai hoping to donate some wool to someone.

100years · 18/08/2011 20:10

Thanks purple :)

I'd love to have a go at making a butterfly, but with time being possibly fairly limited for me I think I will just do the granny square/squares. If LO does arrive early I have a couple of people I could ask to do this for me whether it be knitting or crochet.

purplepidjin · 18/08/2011 20:21

I'm fairly fast, so I underestimate how long it takes others, sorry Blush a granny square takes me less than an hour, and putting a blanket together is a couple of days with other stuff going on (my job means i have to be physically present for the entire shift but not necessarily actively working for all of that time)

The one I did is easier than the pattern looks. I held two different colours together for the butterfly bit, then a totally different colour for the background

100years · 18/08/2011 20:29

Oh sorry I didn't mean it if it came across like that. I've no idea how long it will take me to do a granny square, I'm currently mid blanket for the LO, and some days I whizz through it, others it's like I'm a real slow mo. I'm just on about my LO arriving early that's all, if I've done a square or two and have time I may attempt to make a butterfly but would rather concentrate on the plain square first and get that done. I've only started crochet this year, knitting started last year, so I'm a novice, but enjoy it and have picked it up quite well I think. Hence why I don't know how long a square will take. Who knows I might be like you.

mumatron · 18/08/2011 20:32

I can't pm off my phone but I am more than happy to donate wool again if it is needed.

Pm me if so and i will get it sent asap.

Rip magic :(

Failsafe · 18/08/2011 20:33

I've been paired with herbietea I will order the wool tomorrow morning and send it direct to you herbie.

This is such a fantastic thing to do for the family, MN at its best.

Alambil · 18/08/2011 20:39

so utterly tragic :(

I've pmed ivy too - can't knit but will buy some wool

I'm in west herts so not a million miles from London if you need a blanket train to get it to the family, but I think at this time, it would be best coming from a friend that knew her if that makes sense

Thanks for the match Ivy, look forward to getting it and doing the squares. I think I will try and do letters, I've got an alphabet somewhere.

Lonnie · 18/08/2011 21:02

I would like to do a few squares but can I have the measurements of the squares please? I knit the continental way and the stitch width etc wont work for that (usually - I will start off trying obviously)

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 18/08/2011 21:12

lonnie the squares are 6" wide, you can match it with your own tension and gauge.

skinnymuffin · 18/08/2011 21:14

This is so sad :(

I can knit but I'm only a beginner and I don't want to spoil the blanket if I'm not good enough, but I would like to help so I will add my name to the donor list.

I'll pm ivy now.

My thoughts are with all Magic8's family and friends x

purplepidjin · 18/08/2011 21:21

Sorry, 100 - I would estimate no more than an afternoon as long as you don't actually have to learn to do the stitches Smile

Lewisfan, I'll wave at you next week when I visit the IL's Wink It will take at least 3 weeks for all the squares to reach me, then another one to put together, then we need to find a convenient time... I would estimate it will reach the family in early October so hopefully when things don't feel quite so raw Sad and, of course, someone can hang on to it until they feel ready.

That's an impressive list, Ivy. At some point I'll dredge up the list of contributors to all the blankets - I think we got to about 400? - and add everyone in. Such a wonderful thing to do, but such an awful reason to have to do it Sad

Lonnie, 6" please Smile

OP posts:
purplepidjin · 18/08/2011 21:23

Skinny it would be an honour to put your square on the blanket - one square that has taken sweat and tears for a beginner to produce is worth dozens from someone why knocks them up in 20 minutes!

OP posts:
purplepidjin · 18/08/2011 21:23

Why?? Who!

OP posts:
Alambil · 18/08/2011 21:27

I will tryyyyy to make one too - but I am useless... I will donate as well as try so at least I know one will make it!

please may I be very rude and ask for a wool reminder? thanks

FreudianSlipper · 18/08/2011 21:33

what terribly terribly sad new :( how awful for her children and her partner

it is lovely what you are doing, i can not knit at all but shall pm ivy to help in another way

Lonnie · 18/08/2011 21:35

thank You 6" I can work with.. (now dd3 will start complaining Ive still not finished her blanket though so I guess this will make me get on with that too)

peeoffkitty · 18/08/2011 21:38

I don't know how to do a PM but definitely count me in for doing a couple of squares. I'll get my own wool this weekend.

FoxyRevenger · 18/08/2011 21:40

I can't knit. And I have not a penny in the bank right now.

But you are all wonderful, thoughtful woman and you make MN the place that it is.

If Magic' family ever reads this, Magic always came across as so genuine and funny in her posts, we will all miss her lovely light spirit.

skinnymuffin · 18/08/2011 21:44

Thank you purple, have pm'd you.

What a lovely place mn is when it counts.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 18/08/2011 21:46

foxy - thank you.
we (some friends of magic's) are putting together a memory book for her family. I think we will print out this thread and add it.
