KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 13:45

Following on from the call for quilters and knitters here, this thread is for those who would like to in contribe a square so that we can make a quilt for EdgarAleNPie and her family.

Your square needs to be:

7" square
cotton or polycotton
pre-washed to avoid shrinkage
zigzagged or overlocked around the edges, if possible
Any colour
If appliqued, using cotton
Can be embroidered
Any design to be in the central 6" square
Can send plain squares too

Details regarding posting, etc, to follow.

Many thanks.

Thanks so much for organising this, Knotty.

Please put me down for a square. I can do as many as needed. (I was going to use white cotton with coloured embroidery thread btw - washes at 40...)

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 20:22

Lippy, we decided to have a no colour limitation with the quilt. The yarn blanket has a colour scheme but you can get away with so much with patchwork. Sort of characterises Mumsnet too: such a variety of people.

Madamimadam, You need to look to Pixie and Pidjin: they are the big fish in this whole crafting mission.

I'm the minnow in charge of nowt but nagging people for squares. Grin

Oh and ta for yours btw.

[even fish have manners]

Don't know if any of you have seen the other thread that Edgar has just started re the funeral service. Just wanted to point out, she says that her ds loved bright colours and flowers. Thought it might be helpful when deciding on a theme for squares. Also makes it a little bit more personalised too.Sad

bebejones · 21/03/2011 20:29

I'd be happy to contribute a square. Will you be posting where to send them or PMing people? How long do we have to get the squares ready?

Not sure what I will do yet, need to have a look through my fabrics! :)

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 20:32

Oh thanks, I hadn't seen that. Just so very sad SadI linked some applique ideas for flowers earlier. My fabrics are Spring colours; bright, cheery and fresh. Will go with some flowers then.

Thank you, Bebe. We will let you know about the posting once that side of it is sorted. We also haven't sorted the timespan so you are ok for the minute!

I love the idea of white with posh embroidery - I do a mean longstitch with wool, and there's all sorts of knobs on my sewing machine...

I'm not sure I'm a big fish, I just get frustrated when people waffle around not making decisions interfering busybody and we need to be on this to get it finished. Too many projects start with the best of intentions, and never get anywhere Sad

The plan is to use the money donated by the non-crafters to fund materials for the crafters who need it and to pay for postage. Pixie is going to send out stamped addressed envelopes for everyone to post their square in, with the address on the front being that of the person who will be constructing it (I'm getting the yarn ones)

That, and how we're going to get this to the Edgar family, will be sorted out in the next week or so. Meanwhile, if anyone knows the Edgars in RL and would be willing to pass it on please let us know!

Hassled · 21/03/2011 21:23

I can barely thread a needle, I'm afraid, but just wanted to pat you all on the back (that sounds really patronising - sorry) for doing this - it's a lovely idea.

NewZenglishMama · 21/03/2011 21:33

Someone suggested yesterday the possibility of incorporating some fabric from something special/meaningful of Edgar's DS. I thought this was a really lovely idea, but agree the logistics make it difficult.

This might be a daft idea, but could we leave a plain white or pale colour square in one of the corners or the middle, so if there is something special Edgar's family wanted to add to the quilt when the time was right for them, they could??

Also, I'm already down for one square, but if more are needed, please just say. More than happy to do some extras if needed.

OpheliaBumps · 21/03/2011 21:48

Just adding a post to bookmark the thread. I'm making a square, but won't get time to do anything till Sunday, I hope this won't hold anything up.

NewZ I think that's a lovely idea, to have one plain white square for the family to personalise if they wish.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 21:58

Hassled, if you would like to help out, PixieOnaLeaf is organising PayPal donations both for postage and so that those with a couple of spare quid can provide materials for those with a couple of spare hours iyswim?

There's also knit and crochet options available, should your talents lie in that direction Wink

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 22:00

NewZ, I also think that is a lovely idea. As yet, we don't have a grand total of squares so we havethe opportunity to leave a plain square on the front. If we back it using a light, plainish fabric the Edgar family could add more there too.

count me in too please, cant imagine what they are going through right now.

Hassled · 21/03/2011 22:10

puple - thanks. Have PMd her.

Hassled · 21/03/2011 22:10

purple, even.

ThisIsANiceCage · 21/03/2011 22:12

Hmm, Knotty would it be a good idea to ask MN Towers to rename this thread to mention "fabric" in the title. Or even the first post?

And perhaps the other thread to specify knit/crochet?

Newcomers there (and me!) are a bit confused.

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 22:12

I've just seen that Edgar has said that her little boy loved balloons and even slept with one in his bed Sad. I'll incorporate some into one of my squares. Would be lovely if someone else would too.

OP posts:
KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 22:14

Ah, sorry ThisIsANiceCage, suppose I just assumed 'quilt' would be obviously fabric.
Assumed too much. Sorry.

My sewing skills are a bit rusty, and I don't have a machine, but I'm more than up for trying something out for Edgar and her family. I have some embroidery silks around, and I've done some applique in the past so I'm not completely cack handed Smile

Without a machine (or pinking shears) is it better that I hem it to 7" or just leave a wider margin that someone else can cut down to size?

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 22:19

It doesn't help that we're all referring to making 2 quilts when actually we're making a quilt and a blanket...

Balloons, flowers, bright colours... This is going to be incredible Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 21/03/2011 22:19

I would like to send a square with a butterfly applique from me and my Billie.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 22:20

Purveyor, hem to 7" would be brilliant, thank you

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 22:20

A wider margin should be fine. Thank you. Smile

I've just reported my own OP to try to get the word fabric added.
