Following on from the call for quilters and knitters here, this thread is for those who would like to in contribe a square so that we can make a quilt for EdgarAleNPie and her family.

Your square needs to be:

7" square
cotton or polycotton
pre-washed to avoid shrinkage
zigzagged or overlocked around the edges, if possible
Any colour
If appliqued, using cotton
Can be embroidered
Any design to be in the central 6" square
Can send plain squares too

Details regarding posting, etc, to follow.

Many thanks.

Youretheone - that's the kind of thing I would do! I'm sure it's salvageable!

I am having a sewing break!

Decided on doing a central flower with 2 butterflies. Haven't done too much yet, but it's not that complicated so shouldn't take too long! :)

I have just pasted a message from The Edgar Family below:

Hello

We Edgars have been reading this thread (and others) in teary-eyed awe at the outpouring of love for our little boy.

We wanted to let you know that he was called Leo and he loved balloons, cake, his ball, flowers (purple, blue and pink ones), cars, planes and buses. And many other things too - you can't really go wrong with anything.

*
So, apart from flowers and balloons, think cake, balls, cars, planes and buses. For Leo x

I have unearthed some blue & some red fabric & ordered some blue-themed flowers off eBay, so will get sewing once they arrive :)

Can I check something, does Pixie want our addresses? Or does she want to send us hers? Confused

Habbibu · 22/03/2011 15:18

How about lions too - for Leo?

youretheoneformefatty · 22/03/2011 15:45

Hi. Thanks for that, Knotty . It's lovely to be able to bring a name and a little bit of Leo's personality to mind.

Just spent a lovely hour or two in the garden with ds's, the eldest of which has been doing the artwork for our square and I've been going over it in embroidery. The only thing is, I've put "by (his name) aged 4" - am now wondering if this is a bit insensitive/pretentious, IYSWIM?? or am i just over-thinking things as usual!? Any opinions would be great please. Blush

KnottyLocks · 22/03/2011 16:07

Habbibu, lions would be perfect. Great idea Smile

JustKeepSwimming, can you PM Pixie anyhow. I've given her my address but have said I'm happy to post direct to our wonderful 'Mrs Quilter'. If it all gets too much to work out who said what, at least Pixie has everyone's addresses.

Knowing what we already know about Pixie though, she'll have some amazing military operation organised. Grin I wish I had her organising skills.

Engelbert, they sound absolutely wonderful. You have inspired me Smile

Re.Zigzag, I'm sure that will be workable but if you are nervous about it don't zigzag the 2nd one. It's not absolutely necessary, we thought it might help prevent fraying while in transit and during the 'wait to be stitched up phase'.

A quarter in total should be fine.

Hurray! One finished.I've done a blue patterned bird on a pale green background, with a purple and turquoise embroidered tail.I hadn't done any embroidery for about 20 years, but am pretty pleased with the result.

I had a little weep when I read about Leo.Sad

Mirage, that sounds fabulous. Each stitch made with love.

My eyes fill everytime I read about Leo.

I have a butterfly, it is cross stitched by Billie. I would like to include it on the blanket. It is very precious to me but I think it would be nice to pass it on to Leo's family. Would it work if I appliqued it on to a square or would this cause problems with washing etc? Billie really was a very talented cross sticher, she had a light touch that I could never match.

I was thinking of machine stitching it on to a suitable square.

What do the experts think?

purplepidjin · 22/03/2011 17:44

Yourethe, personally I love the idea that your four year old cared enough for a little boy he never met to make a square for a patchwork quilt, and putting his name on it just shows what a wonderful kind thing he's done. I think that the Misses Edgar will be pleased to know other children are thinking of them.

The reason everyone's addresses are needed is because the plan is to use the donated money to send everyone a stamped addressed envelope to post their square in. I do not envy Pixie's writing hand! Hope she's got a printer and a box of labels lol

MrsDeVere, AFAIK as long as the ends are secure so the aida doesn't fray, it should be fine? Thank you for donating something so special

youretheoneformefatty · 22/03/2011 18:30

Thanks purple, that's put my mind at rest. Will start on the next ones as soon as the bath/book/storytime marathon is complete!

They are usually washable but I can wash it first to check. I dont want to make the quilt complicated by including it. Its only a tiny piece. I taught her to stitch to keep he busy in hosptial and we did little designs (the sort that go into cards) . If its going to be tricky I will include a butterfly somehow Smile.

morsbagmum · 22/03/2011 19:49

I have no idea if I've already said this but I would be more than happy to contribute some squares for the quilt, just let me know the details of where to post.

I can do applique if raw edge is acceptable, if not I'll happily send plain squares.

Thank you

Blatherskite · 22/03/2011 20:04

A while ago, I made both my children stained glass hot air balloons that hang in thier bedroom windows to catch the sun. I'd love to make Leo a fabric version for his quilt. Would that be OK or do we have enough balloons already?

purplepidjin · 22/03/2011 20:06

Morsbagmum, if it's washable it's fine Smile

Blatherskite, we currently have no idea what anyone is doing! If you would like to do hot air balloons, that would be wonderful and thank you ver much Smile

Blatherskite · 22/03/2011 20:19

Oh good, I'll get started then. Feels nice to be making a third balloon and it's something very personal from us that little Leo would probably have loved too.

Will find some lovely, bright fabrics for it :)

morsbagmum · 22/03/2011 20:20

purplepidgin yes it will be washable, gives a nice frayed edge when washed... will get onto it tomorrow.

KnottyLocks · 22/03/2011 21:15

Back after family duties.

Youretheoneformefatty: please use your son's design with his name on it. It is such a heartfelt gesture, the Edgars would appreciate it I'm sure.

The more balloons the merrier Smile
