Following on from the call for quilters and knitters here, this thread is for those who would like to in contribe a square so that we can make a quilt for EdgarAleNPie and her family.

Your square needs to be:

7" square
cotton or polycotton
pre-washed to avoid shrinkage
zigzagged or overlocked around the edges, if possible
Any colour
If appliqued, using cotton
Can be embroidered
Any design to be in the central 6" square
Can send plain squares too

Details regarding posting, etc, to follow.

Many thanks.

I would love to help... I have some gorgeous yellow-ey bluey Oriental flowery fabric that would make a fab plain one, and can happily do an embroidered one as well. If you need more squares just ask - I have a HUGE stash we can raid! Grin

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 16:49

oooo Wanda, you temptress Grin. Let's say two to start with and see how we go.However, we may well take you up on your offer of more!

Can we do the iron on ones?

Blush
KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 18:09

JKS, if it's a cotton iron-in then that's ok but it needs to be securely attached.
If you're nervous about the applique bit, just pick a lovely patterned fabric and send us a square of that. We need those too Smile

Don't Panic! Just keep swimming Grin

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 19:01

Iron on ones are a bit Hmm because they don't wash well. Sewing them on is better. IIRC, the younger DD is about 1 yo so stuff like sequins that can be swallowed are best avoided...

HelpMeWanda · 21/03/2011 19:13

Do y'all think it would be too cheesy to do a Mumsnet logo applique? I have some felt that's just the right colour blue... and some lovely white cotton for backing... or is that a bit inappropriate seeing as its for the DDs? Grin

adamomma · 21/03/2011 19:16

Thanks for getting this organized Knotty.

I'm off to do a little internet shopping for the fabric......

Mirage · 21/03/2011 19:21

Will go and sort through my huge stash of fabric and see what I can come up with.Happy to contribute as many squares as needed. Will it be ok if I hem my squares to 7",as I don't have a sewing machine?

youretheoneformefatty · 21/03/2011 19:43

I gather the square just needs to be plain or appliqued and we don't need to quilt it as this will be done afterwards? (so it doesn't need any wadding attached?) Have I got this right? - (sorry, v. easily baffled these days) Blush

Habbibu · 21/03/2011 19:48

yy, same question as Mirage.

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 20:12

youretheone has it spot on - the quilting and construction will be undertaken by an expert, we just need to provide the cut and, if you like decorated, shapes Smile

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 20:16

Mirage we decided on zigzagging or overlocking to help prevent fraying as it could be a while before they are all stitched together. It's not an essential element at all!
If you don't have a machine, don't worry. Leave the edges raw or you could use pinking shears if you have them.

You'retheoneformefatty the wadding and quilting will be done once all the quilt pieces are finally together. So, you don't have to worry about either.

Hope that's understandable. Smile

OP posts:
Habbibu · 21/03/2011 20:16

It's just the edging, pidjin - can't really overlock or zigzag by hand (I don't think?), so is hand-hemming ok?

Habbibu · 21/03/2011 20:17

Oh, x-posts! Thanks.

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 20:17

See Pidjin beat me to it! I spent too long typing my post. Or rather, thinking. Slow moving cogs obviously.

Bloody fantastic idea!

Good enough reason even for me attempt to thread a needle.

LadyInPink · 21/03/2011 20:19

Would love to make a square Knotty. Keep us posted on when it's due/where to send etc.

Had originally thought it was going to be a boy quilt but a few posts up made it sound it is for his beloved sisters so can it be made from any material then??

It was so heartbreaking to read the thread and my heart goes out to Edgar and the whole family at this horrific time.

KnottyLocks · 21/03/2011 20:19

Good for you, Orm. It's in print now...get to work.
