Following on from the call for quilters and knitters here, this thread is for those who would like to in contribe a square so that we can make a quilt for EdgarAleNPie and her family.

Your square needs to be:

7" square
cotton or polycotton
pre-washed to avoid shrinkage
zigzagged or overlocked around the edges, if possible
Any colour
If appliqued, using cotton
Can be embroidered
Any design to be in the central 6" square
Can send plain squares too

Details regarding posting, etc, to follow.

Many thanks.

Blather, don't worry about the back of it - that will be covered by the wadding and backing fabric.

There is no immediate rush, so don't panic. Can you borrow a friend's machine if you are uncomfy about finishing it by hand?

Right have uploaded my photo - not for compliments but just to hopefully reassure others who are 1st-timers like me to have a go :)

(the quilt-assembler will have to choose where to hid it in a corner somewhere!)

peeriebear · 27/03/2011 16:24

Aw it's pretty JKS :) and bright.

KnottyLocks · 27/03/2011 17:16

JustKeepSwimming - d'you know what? I think it looks better because it's wonky on an angle Grin It is very cute indeed.

What does mean a great deal is that you have gone to such an effort and learnt a new skill to be a part of this wonderful project.

Guess what? You can have a great fat wonky gold star!

peerie - simply wow.

JKS - also, wow. I'm stuck well and truly in my comfort zone and you've shown me up good and proper!

Needle · 27/03/2011 23:22

I've finished mine, but am far too embarrassed to put up a picture now that I've seen those gorgeous offerings. It's got a duck on it.

Calico1 · 27/03/2011 23:32

Am I too late to do a square? I'd love to contribute if I can....I can probably make one tomorrow and post on Tues if that would work with the timescale?

Needle · 27/03/2011 23:46

calico, I think we've got until the 8th to get them done. I've put mine up, but i'm slightly concerned that i've cut it rather fine with the seam allowances on the left hand side (the green patch on the right is supposed to overlap) also, I used a light cotton twill and it didn't occur to me that that might be too heavy. I hope it's going to be ok.

KnottyLocks · 27/03/2011 23:52

Needle, I'm liking the sound of the duck. Can't see it though Smile

Calico, it's not too late. Details are in the OP. Can you Pm PixieOnaLeaf to let her know you're in. There are many ideas for designs on this thread, if you want to add something to it.

Needle · 27/03/2011 23:56

That's odd, I wonder if I made it private by mistake? I'll check.

Needle · 28/03/2011 00:04

Right, it should work now.

purplepidjin · 28/03/2011 07:33

Aw, Needle, lickle quack quack!!!! cuuuuuuuuute! Grin

You're a theatre costumier and you're worried??? Shock most of us are enthusiastic amateurs!!

Calico1 · 28/03/2011 08:42

Ok thanks - will pm Pixie this morning. Needle - that's fab!

KnottyLocks · 28/03/2011 09:32

Needle - that is beautiful! Gold star! Grin

If you are worried about the seam allowance, could you stitch an edge on so it's in a frame? It would make the square larger but that can be trimmed to the right size, either by yourself or the our most talented quilter. Would be a easier than unpicking all your hard work.

OP posts:
Needle · 28/03/2011 10:32

KnottyLocks I was thinking about that, yes. My only concern was that it might make the square father heavy. I think i'll have to though, I don't want to make things difficult for the quilters!
I am a costumer, but applique is the one thing I rarely do- I do a lot more fine embroidery and dressmaking, so I was a little nervous about how it would turn out.

KnottyLocks · 28/03/2011 10:38

Needle, I wouldn't worry about the weight. There are so many appliqued squares being stitched - they'll all weigh quite a bit compared to 'plain' squares. Go with the border.

You needed have worried about how it turned out: it's gorgeous. Smile

Loving seeing everyone's squares! I am still labouring over my intarsia knitting, so I haven't started my quilt square yet, you are all such talented lovely ladies!

bebejones · 28/03/2011 12:12

Having a sewing break...my thumb hurts! Reasonably pleased with the train so far.

Happy sewing everyone! :)

KnottyLocks · 28/03/2011 13:25

Hello crafty quilters!
So my Upsy Daisy cheat square didn't work... the dungarees I ordered off eBay were gorgeous but the applique was far too big to fit into a 6in square! Curses! So now I'm doing it the old fashioned way - tracing paper, the In The Night Garden storybook, and a piece of plain cotton... Wanda's gonna try embroider the Pinky Ponk! Whoo hoo! Grin

Can you tell I'm enjoying this? Its been such a fantastic experience to be part of something so big and wonderful...

(pic as soon as its finished... I may be a while...)

KnottyLocks · 28/03/2011 22:54

Wanda, The Pinky Ponk? Get you! Can't wait to see it.

Go Wanda!
