Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is this acceptable in a school?

A friend of mine is a teacher in an all boys school. He was showing a group of pupils some of the football and was fast-forwarding to get to the action. The camera lingered on some pretty girls in the crowd (you know the ones they normally pick!) and the pupils demanded that he go back so they could get a proper look. He obliged, but commented that if there had been a single girl in the classroom, he wouldn't have.

Obviously this was a pretty minor incident, but do you think it was fine (and if so, would it have also been fine if there had been girls present?), or is it encouraging the sexual objectification of women? Or anything else?

What are your thoughts?

Oh foureleven there's no point honestly, she's a troll. She's not here to discuss, she's here to time waste in the heat.

You said if I answered your question, you'd go for good.

Surely you weren't lying?

Thisisthatvilewoman · 28/06/2010 18:12

You should get it off your public profile.

oh I see. You want more feeding.

Not going to happen.

So I suppose we ahve to resign ourselves to you hanging about.

clemettethedropout · 28/06/2010 19:14

Claire, your view of women in history is simplistic and inaccurate. Women weren't oppressed because they had the childbearing role. For example, men and women worked alongside each other in textile factories doing exactly the same work but women were paid half of what men were. Their children were also at work, earning the same as them.

As for the race argument. Slavery was abominable and even though it was abolished racism still exists throughout our society. Should we therefore say that because this racism is not as bad as slavery that it is tolerable and should not be challenged?

Inequalities exist throughout our society and some women work to challenge them. If you choose not to, or to ignore them, then that is your perogative. I don't expect you will answer this post, preferring instead to believe that all feminists have something missing in their lives. It would be galling for you to think that we had happy, fulfilling lives yet still wanted to work to make the world a better place for all its citizens.

I know shes a troll but I dont think it hurts to get one's point of view across calmly in response to such comments from her/him. I was a bit bored anyway.

I didnt see the messages she added that got delted but was the 'get it off your public profile' aimed at me? did she say something about my picture? Oh no, claire doesnt think im ugly does she? That will never do!

StillSquiffy · 29/06/2010 08:24

Bugger, I missed the feeding frenzy and now she's been all deleted. What kind of crap was she coming out with this time?

sethstarkaddersmum · 29/06/2010 09:29

Oh good they've deleted her. She was getting in the way of some interesting discussions.
