Stephen King's response to Rowling on sex and gender discussions

Stephen King was asked a simple question - are trans women women? - and when he said yes, one of the most wealthy writers in the world turned on him.

J.K. Rowling had just publicly showered him with praise. Within hours of his answer, she deleted it and, in King's words, "sorta blocked" him.

King is one of the most famous novelists alive, and he didn't walk it back or cast himself as the victim. He said plainly that nobody had cancelled Rowling - he just thought she was wrong. He turns 79 today, still saying it.

He could have kept the friend and stayed quiet. He said yes instead.

Some trains which identify as ‘transpennine’ are surely cispennine Confused

Do you think that walking is safe? I don't want to be surprised by where/when I end up each time I travel?

Source (including for their being friends, thank you mate, Stephen Fry's tried it already) or it didn't happen.

What? I dont understand what this means

It’s, ironically, a very cargo cult kind of insult, isn’t it?

A few years ago TRAs (I think Katy Montgomerie was one: remember him?) noticed GCs pointing out the similarities between genderism & cults - a position that GCs maintained by knowing the characteristics of cults & seeing how the same characteristics appear in genderism.

They realised being a cult was a BAD THING, but couldn't be arsed to address the actual content of the comparison.

Instead - like building a symbolic landing strip out of flowers & hoping it will produce cargo - they just went for the form.

Call knowing what sex is a “cult”!

It has gone out of fashion: like the OP it’s very retro.

But crap ideas don't seem to die, do they?

It's very DARVO. Also reminiscent of Trump's appropriation of "fake news"," which was coined as a bona fide term to describe Russian hybrid warfare (a.k.a. "flooding the zone with shit"), to instead describe actual news unwelcome to the MAGA world.

Has King ever written a trans character? Or an NB one? I suppose it's possible some of his female characters were actually trans identifying men but either passed so perfectly the other characters didn't notice (he does mostly write fiction) or were too polite/woke to say anything. An NB character would be they/themming so it would be more noticeable. I'm asking because I honestly don't know. It's would be strange if he whole heartedly supported people who claimed some flavour of trans identity that he hasn't put one in a book.

I know JKR had a rather sympathetically written TiM in one of her Strike novels.

I want to ask something. It's a genuine question. Why does a transgender woman want to claim female space. Some transgender eomen I presume have nice lives and and are living the life they want, so why is there the need to claim female space. I'm not being facetious. Why not have spaces for them.i cant see why there wouldnt be enough power in claiming a space for themselves. Why dont they want to be accepted as themselves and equal in their own space. Why isnt it enough to be who they actually are.

She has her opinion, he has his. Mature people are able to disagree and remain friends. Especially about issues that do not directly affect them. And people can also not give a toss about famous writers’ views on topics that have nothing to do with writing.

I’ve seen a few ‘let’s get round this by defining sex as something other than sex’ arguments recently.

The barrel is truly being scraped.

It's usually part of the "sex is a spectrum" nonsense. Because certain sex traits, such as height, are bimodal and overlapping, they claim that so is sex itself. Neatly overlooking not only the difference between sex and sex traits, but also the fact that the two separate bimodal curves are.... male and female.

If 'cis' means frequently delayed or cancelled and the compo comes by cheque, they surely are. Words can apparently mean whatever we want them to mean...

CassOle · Yesterday 00:51

Is a replacement bus service a trans-train or a cis-train, then?

Maybe take the Trans-Siberian Railway instead, you could end up somewhere warm?

But with a gazillion mosquitoes, the Sibirian summer is infamous for them.

Funny question to ask on a predominately GC forum. It's as though you don't want to know why or want to be told all the reasons why they shouldn't. Why not do the research yourself or just ask trans people?

Remain civil? Sure. Friends? Depends what type of friend. An intimate friend? Depends on the disagreement if its just a trivial issue sure but whether human rights are optional or its ok to frame arguments in dehumanising & demonising language? No. How can someone truly be a friend if they are fundamentally incapable of understanding equality & empathy?

Why do you have to be like that. It was a genuine qyestion. Why the need to be unpleasant.Yes, I can read up on it but I'm not sure of the answer and thought someone could tell me. .why are you suggesting I have motivations I dont have. Why dont you step back from yoursrlf for a moment and stop bring nasty and unhelpful..If you dont want to answer my question, just ignore it.

That you interpret logical conclusions as unpleasantness is on you. Its simply a 'strange' place as in irrevocably biased to ask what trans people think about an issue. Surely you understand this?

Don't take it personally. ChoppingNorthernIcelandicBaileyGoodnewsGretel is only here for the scolding.

So who died and made you the policeman of a thread . What an arrogant thing to say. I didnt ask you to jump on my question and answer it. If you've got nothing useful to say to me regarding what I wrote , then dont say anything. I think you are the sort of person who'd cause a row in an empty house, so I'll leave you to dit squatting inside your own unnecessarily created little drama. Gooodnight.

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm simply querying why you would expect to to get an answer that accurately reflected the truth from a bias source. That you would consider such a neutral question offensive perhaps is more a reflection of your fragility than anything else.

A ' bias source'. ?? What's that. Do you perhsps mean a ' biased source''. Mind you, it's a bit hard to see if you've used the right letters , isn't it, coz it's quite dark half a mile up your own arse.

For some one who protests "unpleasantness" you sure seem fine engaging in it.

Why won't you answer the question I wonder?

Doth protest too much…

Heres an MN thread from June 2020, not sure why OP is dragging all this up now.

The TL:DR of the thread

On June 28, 2020, J.K. Rowling tweeted a quote from Andrea Dworkin. Stephen King retweeted it without additional commentary. JK Rowling subsequently tweeted a public note of praise to King, thanking him for standing up for women's concerns.

Shortly after, someone on T asked S King to clarify his position on TW, and he replied "Yes. Trans women are women."
In response, JK Rowling unfollowed him, deleted her tweet of praise, and then I think blocked him.

King behaved like an arse hat.
