Stephen King's response to Rowling on sex and gender discussions

Stephen King was asked a simple question - are trans women women? - and when he said yes, one of the most wealthy writers in the world turned on him.

J.K. Rowling had just publicly showered him with praise. Within hours of his answer, she deleted it and, in King's words, "sorta blocked" him.

King is one of the most famous novelists alive, and he didn't walk it back or cast himself as the victim. He said plainly that nobody had cancelled Rowling - he just thought she was wrong. He turns 79 today, still saying it.

He could have kept the friend and stayed quiet. He said yes instead.

‘GC cult’ 😂. It’s like coining a funny name to call people who are aware the earth is round.

I know right.

Upholding scientific facts that have been understood since the dawn of time, yet WE are the ones in a cult?

You couldn’t make this shit up,

Off topic, but it's not all horror!

I love all of his work which is not in the horror genre.

He is still wrong on the trans issue.

What books aren't horror, out of interest?

You must read 11/22/63 it's a mix of time travel, the assassination of JFK and a time enduring love story. No horror in sight.

If you do then you will understand my username!

And there are many other fantasy novels too. The Dark Tower Series, The Stand and more.

lifeturnsonadime · 03/10/2026 22:04

It's almost as though, as a GC woman I can appreciate the art and the artist, and still disagree with his view on transwomen.

Who'd have thunk it?

alcovecupboards · 03/10/2026 21:58

You'll have to ask the people outraged at others withdrawing support from JK to answer that one.

Yet you brought it up

Oh lord that was fucking years ago

god you ppl are tedious

he's a coward

men are still not women

HTH

That's what I was going to say, wasn't this years ago?

SabrinaThwaite · 03/10/2026 22:06

OP, why have you just cut and pasted a Facebook post that’s been doing the rounds?

King's output is patchy, at his best he is fantastic but he has a lot published that isn't. He is a man with serious substance abuse issues who admits to not remembering writing much of his output (probably because his wife wrote it for him).

Hang on. You said he wrote about time travel. Is that it? Are we all in a Stephen King story?

85% a brilliant book. Shame about the ending.

😱

Well there’s at least one badly written female character on this thread. So it would explain that.

alcovecupboards · 03/10/2026 21:54

She didn't call him out on anything. She deleted recent praise that she'd heaped on him - all because he disagrees with her.

I dunno, it's not like disagreeing on opinions such as the best way to cook a steak or the merits of a holiday destination. It's more like 'disagreeing' on whether fish live in water. When someone reveals a fundamental disconnect with basic facts of life, it's hard to maintain respect for them.

Interested in what you didn't like about it? Did you find it a bit 'wet' (for want of a better word?)

JanesLittleGirl · 03/10/2026 22:10

Oh bugger! I am a millennial. My main reading was Stephen King and JK Rowling. Please tell me that this isn't going to be a fight to the death?

Yeh I've read that some of his work is Tabitha's too.

AstonCanKissMyArse · 03/10/2026 22:17

I love the way that 'withdrawing support' (JKR to King) is equated with death and rape threats (of others to JKR).

Or that what she's done is somehow equivalent to actually participating in a cancellation, ie using money or power and influence (even if that's just power of the mob) to ensure that an artist can't show their work anywhere. That they lose venues and sponsorship and ultimately their livelihood.

She quietly deleted one of her own tweets. So what? She doesn't owe anyone her time or attention (even if he is a Very Famous Man). She, like everyone else, can change her mind (and if the sexes were reversed, everyone would be calling King desperate - "JKR did give me attention. Honestly, even though it's been deleted, I really did get a name check...").

Still. It shouldn't really be a surprise when people who think a man can become a woman can't see false equivalence when its staring them in the face...

I've said it before and I'll say it again - these JKR haters seem to all have mummy issues. For someone they don't like they give her a remarkable amount of headspace and energy.

I would have preferred an alternative future that was terrible but grounded in reality rather than giant fucking worms. A nuclear war with a previously unthreatening nation, JFK dying a different way leading to a different successor and the result being chaos but I could not see how how JFK living would result in earthquakey worms.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/10/2026 22:19

I’m not sure that King should be held up as some great champion for women - he’s written some pretty unpleasant misogynistic stuff (the lost in the sewers chapter of It for instance).

Sorry, just to be clear, you think "scientific facts" have been "understood since the dawn of time"? I'm going to hasten a guess that you're not a scientist...

“Turned on him!”

Oh dear, how will he cope?

Will she be sending him death & rape threats & targeting someone she wrongly believes to be his daughter?

I do like some of Stephen King’s books but he doesn’t exactly research outside his wheelhouse (his “Romani” in Thinner speak a bastardised form of Swedish, for no apparent reason: his Italian gangsters speak neither credible Italian, Sicilian or Neapolitan).

In your opinion, why is it if any consequence that she deleted a tweet?
