Stephen King's response to Rowling on sex and gender discussions

Stephen King was asked a simple question - are trans women women? - and when he said yes, one of the most wealthy writers in the world turned on him.

J.K. Rowling had just publicly showered him with praise. Within hours of his answer, she deleted it and, in King's words, "sorta blocked" him.

King is one of the most famous novelists alive, and he didn't walk it back or cast himself as the victim. He said plainly that nobody had cancelled Rowling - he just thought she was wrong. He turns 79 today, still saying it.

He could have kept the friend and stayed quiet. He said yes instead.

I like Stephen King's books - especially his older ones. Prefer them to JKR's stuff actually. I like how he supports other lesser known writers too. His memoir On Writing is really excellent. I disagree with him that transwomen are women. So does JKR. Big wow as one of my kids' friends used to say. Or I could use King's own phrase and say "he’s on the side of the angels in most respects, but he does have this one thing that he’s very vehement about."

Read that article about Koro, the disappearing penis syndrome, some of the countries where it happened still persecute men and, mostly, women (children too) for being witches. From the article

The epidemic began in Nigeria and Cameroon, and spread to Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal by 1997. Cases were reported in Cotonou, Benin where mobs attacked individuals accused of the penis theft and authorities ordered security forces to curb the violence, following the deaths of five people by vigilantes.

I didn't find it that funny.

You'll have to ask the people outraged at others withdrawing support from JK to answer that one.

But she didn't threaten him with physical attack and even death as the TRA ghouls so often do to her. No comparison.

The best humour is serious.
