IwantToRetire · 31/08/2026 00:48

Today was another Parkrun Saturday and like every weekend the achievements by women was demoted by men running in the female category.

We are hoping to change this! In only a few weeks time, we will debut Reality Rules Runners UK at Parkrun. We hope that many hundreds (hopefully thousands) of you will join us to send a clear and strong statement to Parkrun about the huge support there is for fairness and sex-based categories at their events.

All sports events are responsible for putting on fair events. This includes free, volunteer run, community events like Parkrun.

So please tell people about Reality Rules Runners UK, as we are hoping to attract lots more supporters before our debut at Parkrun on 3 October.

Thank you! 🙏

I hope they get a big turn out, what they're asking for is a simple thing, the fact that Park Run won't keep a fair and accurate record is a disgrace.

Mysterian · 31/08/2026 09:56

They would need to abolish the women's category and just have runners. I don't see that any other system would work.

At the moment you fill in an online registration form and get given a barcode. You show the barcode at the end with a position code you're given when you finish. It is not exactly a secure system. Anybody could give their barcode to an Olympic athlete and get their time. All times need to be taken with a pinch of salt. The proper competitive runners, the ones at the front (a LONG way from me!) are going to be in official running clubs with verification checks in place. They should care about those races and not fun runs.

Plus, the new women's category would contain transmen who are taking testosterone, so that wouldn't be fair either.

They aren't expecting anyone to verify people's sex. They are just asking them to set the expectation. As you say, it's not a secure system and people could e.g. lie about their age, but that would be frowned upon. This is the same.

Trans men don't all automatically take testosterone. Trans men who want to take part in completive sport (like the skier Elis Lundholm) can only delay treatment while they are competing and qualify as women because, even with testosterone they would not qualify as men.

However, as they could compete in an open category at park run there would be no requirement for them to compete as women.

It used to work perfectly well before men realised they could get a competitive edge by registering as women: people are mostly honest and their sex is obvious.

And why can't both a 'fun run sorted by gender' and a 'fun run sorted by sex' coexist, if there's a desire for both?

Serious female runners might gravitate to the latter, to avoid the problem of men dominating in both 'gender' categories, but it would be a choice.

Or are you saying that men would lie to run in the female 'sex' category? Surely not!

The stewards need to be strict, and not worry too much about offending people.

Mysterian · 31/08/2026 10:37

In Parkrun anybody can take whatever substances they want. There's no testing.

Sounds good. If you don't like Parkrun rules, go set up your own thing.

Cannibalising Parkrun doesn't help anyone.

Parkrun receives public funding and makes use of public spaces and so should not discriminate against women.

Parkrun expect people to follow the rules that they set. All that is being asked is that they set fair rules.

Hummusanddipdip · 31/08/2026 10:47

I don't get why this is being created. Parkrun is designed to be you against you. Yes there are other comparative stats, but as said further up, the people to care to look at that are already most likely part of run clubs.

I've never even cared to look at how other people beyond those I run with have done, and sometimes look in wonderment at who came first when they flew past me towards the end of my first lap and go "bloody hell speedy did it in 17.23, I have no chance" their age and sex are usually the last thing I care about.

I have my views around single sex and transpeople. However parkrun is one of those things were I can't get worked up about because you yourself say who and what you are, you are just you improving yourself every run.

If nobody cares then nobody will care if they scrap the comparative stats.

All that is being asked is that the categories make sense, so that they don't discriminate against women. Nobody is expecting volunteers to wander around doing cheek swabs.

There comes a point for all runners when they're going to become slower so by 'competing against themselves' they're sure to lose. I took up running 20 years ago aged 40, I'm slower now than I was 15 years ago but I'm fast for a 60 year old woman.

Results based on age and sex enable me to compare myself to runners the same sex and age as me. A man running in the women's category ruins that.

I agree, a level playing field is not too much to ask for is it, there's a reason there's a female category, which should only have female people in it. The fact that some people don't get the obvious is mindboggling.

If you know nothing about parkrun (an apolitical, free, fun run NOT race) why have you come straight here to spread vitriol and try and spoil it for those that love it?

As someone who runs every week, could not care less about what other people around me are doing or how they identify, everyone is there for a run and a bit of company

RowsOfFlowers · Yesterday 09:09

I do not think OP is spreading vitriol.

I participate in parkrun and I’m a biological female. I would hope that the categories and statistics are accurate. I full well know it’s not a competition, but why have the stats and announce “fastest runners” on the pages then?

It’s just another pocket of society where women’s right to their own category is being encroached by men. When will this end?

I always find it odd when people says 'it's just a fun run', because it suggests that they know nothing about parkrun, even sometimes while taking part.

Did you not know that parkrun emails race positions to all participants, with comparisons based on age and sex? That each parkrun lists everyone's results in order? If the ability to compare isn't important to anyone why don't they just stop?

If it is important, why shouldn't women have equally informative information from an organisation that receives public funding and uses publicly funded spaces?

SwirlyGates · Yesterday 10:17

Mysterian · 31/08/2026 22:35

So what should be done?

And how?

Make it clear in the rules that registration is by birth sex, not gender. Then anyone like Lauren Jesker, or the transwoman who according to recent reports has won 100 events in the women's category, can have their results removed and their registration changed to male.

This doesn't mean that volunteers have to cheek swab everyone, but it sets out expectations, and gives consequences for being caught cheating.

And for anyone saying that it's a community event, results don't matter, they never look at how other people are doing - well that's fine for you, but plenty of runners do like to measure themselves against other people, or as a PP said, for how you are doing compared to your younger self. Remember there was an outcry when ParkRun tried to remove public results a couple of years ago rather than put the transwomen back in their box.

It wouldn't be acceptable to lie about your age - I could say I'm 97 and win in my age group every time, but that would be cheating, right? So why can men lie about being women?

And remember, it's women who are less likely to take part in sports, women who need more encouragement and community or other initiatives, and women who are losing out in the current system.

Just signed up for Parkrun.

I was surprised that

  1. You have to declare your 'gender' (or 'prefer not to say'), there's no option to just sign up without one.
  2. It seems to be harvesting data for sale to advertisers.
  3. Lots of sponsorship.

I got a funny feeling that the 'it's all for laughs' is actually just branding. It seems quite bossy, and concurrently mercenary. And from the aggressive dismissal of women's complaints, seems very blokey.

Anyway.

They can do it voluntarily, or they can be taken to court.

Either way, Parkrun are bound by the law of the land just like any other organisation.

Also, Parkrun are not averse to 'cannibalising' other races.

We had a local informal thing, which has now been taken over by Parkrun.

To Parkrun's obvious benefit, given they sell people's data and get sponsorship, etc.

It's a limited co with a turnover of over £4million. 'Fun run'.

https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/07289574/filing-history

Profit of around £187k last year.

Firstly, the way they've written this makes it sound like this is happening at every parkrun across the land. I'd like to see their stats on how often this if happening, or suspected to be happening, because in all my years of being a parkrunner, Run Director, touring many different events, and being on a number of different parkrun social forums I have only heard of one individual being reported for this so it definitely isn't impacting many people's weekly parkrun results. parkrun scrapped the stats of things like course records and male/female first finishers a while back (although they're still there if you know how to find them).
When you register there's the option to select from male/female/another gender identity/prefer not to day. Now I guess that trans people should be picking "another gender identity" but if they identify as male or female then that's probably what they're going to select.
Also, the majority of people won't actually know or care if their gender position is one place lower than it should rightfully be and given the inaccuracies in some results it might not be 100% anyway. People can also lie about their age should they wish to.
Ultimately, it's a volunteer led event, there's no prize money for "winning" (technically it's a run not a race) and you can register under any persona without being verified or run without being registered.
Yes, i agree that the female category should have females being compared equally against each other, but it's parkrun not the fucking Olympics or even a paid for race!!

How come a company with a £4million turnover and a decent profit is relying so heavily on volunteers?
