In Australia. Supposedly consensual but then how would anyone know? The author is a bit ‘right on’ / pick me cool girl, saying ‘we don’t want to be pearl clutching about porn’ right after describing how violence against women is normalised in 35-45% of it.

If that was my daughter and I’d read that article I would be very pissed off #NotAllPorn

I’ve done some things that a lot of people would consider fairly extreme, but I have never let anyone choke or strangle me. Never will either.

Why would the presumption be that a 16year old girl consented to being strangled to death? This kind of violent and dangerous behaviour should not be normalised by the police. Treat it with the same suspicion they would if she had been found strangled in any other location or during any other activity. Poor girl and her poor family.

RC school - the PSHE lessons include a very terse 'If he ever puts a hand on your throat, you run, you block him, you don't speak to him again, you don't give him a second chance or you will end up dead or on life support whilst he stands up in court and tells everybody, your parents, your granddad, your aunties, your baby brother, all of TikTok and social media that you were really easy and liked it rough'.

I really don’t think it’s appropriate to write an opinion piece if there’s an active police investigation and it hasn’t been fully determined what happened. What if it transpires she was trying to fight him off?

There was an English woman a few years ago, uni student age, who went to Australia and was strangled after a date. He tried to say it was rough sex which went wrong but thankfully didn’t get away with it.

It's got to be a murder charge, otherwise men will continue to strangle women under the guise of "consensual".

She seems to be spending half of that article defending porn and sexual fetish as some sort of counter-blance to the fact that a young girl has been killed by her boyfriend during sex.

They need to start treating it as deliberate murder. Nobody can consent to being murdered. Make an example of the perpetrators.

Hm yes I do want to be pearl clutching about porn actually. My pearls are truly clutched. It's an absolute scourge on society and has taught a whole generation of young men that violent sex is normal. Even when they aren't hurting anyone it's just rubbish performative sex with no focus on what actually feels nice for either party and should be stopped for that.

I would fully support a blanket ban on all violent porn, so any porn showing women being hit or strangled.

She's dead of strangulation because someone strangled her. That is, de facto, a murder.

The sexual strangulation is a moot point based on the idea that it can under some circumstances be a safe and consensual sexual practice.

The law in the UK has changed now to effectively say that if you strangle someone, you do so knowing they may well die, therefore if they do, it's murder.

Same as the one punch killer - he punched a guy thinking he'd punch him, not that he'd kill him. But was convicted of murder (rightly) on the basis that he should reasonably have known punching someone in the head could kill them. Same for strangulation. You don't want to kill someone don't strangle them

There has to be zero excuse for this in law; it's the only thing that will make a difference. Men and boys have to be absolutely bloody terrified of doing it.

But the sexual strangulation is not a moot point, because it’s being used a defence when it may not have even happened.

If it happened, murder.

If it didn’t happen, murder, and everyone at the Guardian is a fool for getting into a debate about sexual strangulation when it wasn’t.

Maybe he beat her up and strangled her. It’s one of the known warning signs of impending domestic murder. Maybe he’s a psychopath who knew if he claimed it was “sex gone wrong” he might get a bit of leeway. Who knows. No one does at this point.

My point is, there’s no point having a debate about the implications of sexual strangulation when no one has any idea about what actually transpired in the room apart from “a source informed on the case.”

I got together with my DH 23 yrs ago.
Before that I had lots of boyfriends, lots of sex. Never, not once did any one of them ask me if they could or try to strangle me.
This is a new ‘trend’ and it’s utterly terrifying how it has become ‘normalised’ by every young man having non stop access to porn.
It’s normalised the things we see in porn - anal sex, chocking on a cock durin* oral sex, hitting women during sex, yanking hair back.

But what I don't understand is, it's well established under UK law that there are many circumstances in which people are legally not allowed to consent to dangerous, damaging or degrading acts.

There was a famous case years back of a kink group who met up and shoved nails into their own privates and stuff. All consenting. All adults. They were all sent down for having injured one another because we have the idea in UK law that you cannot consent to someone cutting your ball off and recording it.

So why on earth should we be protecting the 'right' of women to engage in practices which could kill them and often aren't consensual anyway?

A proper grown up woman can barely ask for what she wants, how is a teenager going to? I’m tired of acting like it’s okay for teens that young to have sex; they just aren’t ready or mature enough on so many levels.
