I only discovered this after having made two reports, and it’s Sunday, so I suppose I’ll find out tomorrow if they are going to follow through.

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute and ask why it has to be a thing in a relationship at all but given the case I’m following through it sort of has to be out there!

OP doesn’t have to date or sleep with anyone he doesn’t want to. He is in complete control of who he chooses to swipe on the dating apps.

Don’t be obtuse. The point is the OP could (app dependent) filter out the fat women but not the male women. Why filter any out if you ‘don’t have to date’ any of them.

Hinge treats trans women as women. So, if you are interested in women, sometimes trans women will appear as suggestions. If you don't like that, leave the app or just scroll by. I'm sure it's irritating for transphobes, but those are the choices.

Your hypothetical app treats trans women as men. Yes, it would be transphobic, but we are talking about a transphobic app which any sensible transgender person wouldn't join. The solution would be for the trans women to either leave the app or accept this weird, transphobic set up where neither the people being swiped, nor the ones doing the matching would be happy.

You might do some reflection on why there are no apps like this.

But how do you know they're transwomen if they don't say so? Photos can be filtered and enhanced to look completely different.

I don't imagine it benefits anyone for people to be deceived into meeting someone who's the opposite sex from what they expect. Embarrassing all round, I should think.

solerolover · 10/08/2026 18:57

If he doesn't want to date trans women, he shouldn't date trans women. There is nothing wrong with that. If he doesn't want to date black women, he shouldn't date black women, and so on.

Sighs deeply...

What if they’re pretending to be a woman and he doesn’t find out until they meet?

bit awks all round, no?

Lexibletheflexible · 10/08/2026 17:14

Sure.. but again, it isnt about sexual orientation, is it? It is about trans women. You don't care if the trans woman says they are straight or bi. And you havent reported to care about whether women are straight or not. So it isn't about their sexual orientation, you just dont want trans women to show up in your searches for available women.

That's because they are men.

It should come as no surprise that straight men don't do penises.

Yeah, the racism caught my eye too

heaven knows how many times it needs to be explained to these people that black women and men are not synonymous for heaven’s sake. So bloody offensive

Being catfished in one way or the other is a risk on dating apps.

Lins77 · 10/08/2026 19:02

Lexibletheflexible · 10/08/2026 18:52

But someone being in your potential matches doesnt mean you have to message them, date them or have sex with them. It just means they turn up in your search when you are looking for available women in the OP's case. It's just a case of scrolling past or swiping left or whatever that app uses.

But if someone hasn't said they're a transwoman and it's not obvious from their (perhaps heavily edited) pics, how would he know to scroll past?

He could ask everyone he speaks to early on if it is important to him. It will be a good way to find women who share his views because they definitely won't mind being asked if they are trans.

Taztoy · 10/08/2026 19:08

What’s the basis of your potential legal action @SingleSexSpacesInSchools ?

I would love to see what you propose be a thing.

That is untrue. Few make you show proof of your age/weight/height etc.

Why have any filters at all then? Someone's sex is a pretty basic category for dating. Why have age categories but not sex categories. You could just reject someone if they look too old or too young for you, no search filter necessary.

Yea. That’s where ‘you can just swipe past them’ falls down. Why eliminate anyone.

Because they usually toggle filters according to the attitudes of their core membership. It's about what they want from the app. Sex is obviously of secondary importance.

What a bizarre statement. Are you bisexual? They're the only people who would be comfortable with both men and women coming up as options on a dating app.

Lexibletheflexible · 10/08/2026 19:32

People spoke poorly of Feeld, but it actually lets you filter by sexuality AND gender. So you could ensure people who ID as "trans women" show up, but people who ID as "women" do.

You are still left in the same position where some TW will ID as women unless the site has a specific rule, though.

Why is it bizarre to say that the sites are designed around the needs and values of the core membership?

Oh come on. You’re really suggesting that for the majority of people the weight or age of a prospective partner is more important than their sex. Really?
