Different instinctive reactions to men and trans women in public

It's occurred to me that I have crossed the road to avoid potentially dodgy men countless times in my life, but never a transwoman, even though I know that transwomen pose exactly the same threats as men do. I'll notice transwomen and recognise that they are trans, but I don't have the same socially-conditioned flight response.

Does anyone else experience this?

That's not true. Cis gendered males are statistically more dangerous and even more so if you're related to them. By all means have your opinions but don't tell lies.

The stats don't lie. If you look at the number of trans-identified men imprisoned for sexual offences compared to the overall population of them, it demonstrates that trans-identified men commit these crimes at a higher rate than the average for men.

dinodart · 02/08/2026 01:07

how many trans identified men do you see on the regular? tbh, i don't encounter enough of them at this point in time to say...

Feel free to quote these robust statistics that “cis gendered men are statistically more dangerous” than trans identified males.

If we're in a crossing road to avoid scenario it's probably a lonely place late at night. You're not going to be able to read the guy's pronouns badge. Unless he's small and a good actor mimicking a female gait, chances are you'd just register man.

I don’t generally cross the road to avoid anyone unless I’m out really early or really late and it feels a bit more threatening because there aren’t many people around and in that case I’d be just as likely to cross if it was a transwoman as any other guy because they’re all just men.

I do wonder how many of these threads you lot can keep creating. It's seemingly numerous and endless in relation to an issue that effects a very small number of people.

“You lot”.

One person created this thread; I have no idea why.

There is no need to treat everyone on this board as if we are all the same; you don’t know what every person you meet here thinks or has experienced. Put your lazy prejudice in the bin.

There is no “you lot”.

And it is “affects” (verb).

Nope when I see a transwomen im automatically on tightened alert as I know that statistically they are more dangerous than the average man

Could you provide evidence re statistics showing Trans Women pose a bigger threat - everything I have read indicates both Trans Men and Trans Women are more likely to be victims of violence, rather than perpetrators.

They’re posted just above. Transwomen are far more likely to offend sexually than any other group.

It affects all females. That’s over 30million in the UK alone.

If two people get the law changed for 100,000 the number of people it affects is 100,000, not 2.

Please post a citation to back up the claim that men who identify as “trans” are more likely than other men to be victims of violence and less likely to be perpetrators.

I was wondering if this was a TIM vs "cis" male thread.

As per the "its not trans women its cis men that are the problem" that some TRAs are pushing.

Then Namechangee11 posts* *

"Cis gendered males are statistically more dangerous and even more so if you're related to them."

Its nice to not be let down by the TRA army.

All men pose the same level of threat to a woman based on their significantly higher strength. Even through accidents a woman is much more likely to be hurt by a man than a man can be hurt by a woman.

What makes the difference is their behaviour.

Men who are safe to be around either have a) a reduced sexual interest in woman i.e. gay men/asexual men or b) have enough self-awareness to know they are stronger and have a history of being more politically empowered, but know they personally are not responsible for that.

Men who are unsafe to be around are generally a) unaware of their strength and are ignorent non the effect it has on the behaviour of women around them b) overly apologetic/ashamed about their increased power and strength c) men who continually push on societal boundaries set up to protect female bodies for their own needs/amusements/sexual satisfaction.

If a transwomen enters a female only space or are dressed like a doll/sex toy they fall into the latter category. Transwomen who do not enter female only spaces fall into the former category. Of course I can't tell the differnce when walking on the street so I will probably - knowing there is a risk because of the strength difference- take the same choice that I would if they were presenting as a man.

So I wouldn't go as far as to cross the street if I see someone who is a transwoman but if they are dressing overly provocatively thats a sign it is a sexual fetish, or they use a female only space because their identity is more important that the saftey of women then yeah I would do everything possible to avoid them- especially being in a room alone with them.

Today I learned that transmen can achieve the same level of strength to other men- I wonder if their violent offending will also increase in line with men as well.

Do you think sometimes they might just be anxious about abuse? Or are you saying they (or at least some of them) want to be attacked here: "hoping to get attention/interactions (whether positive or negative)"

The ones I have seen don’t seem anxious, more looking to see if people have clocked them/believing/checking if they pass. Some do seem keen to have a fight, some, as another poster mentions, clearly have a fetish and for some a humiliation fetish is part of it so they do want a negative reaction. I saw a TW in the ladies’ toilet queue at the theatre recently and he was making eye contact with everyone to see if they would challenge him being in there. I would have reported it to staff but I was on a school trip and it was the end of the show and I had to take them home ASAP.

EwwStew · 02/08/2026 06:57

I don't cross the road for every man, only those giving off vibes.

I would obviously avoid a man showing outward signs of mental illness more than one who was not.

There are transwomen in this town who I would avoid, There are just off vibes. There are a couple who clearly don't want to talk to me (also trans allies) having in the past had discussions about gender ID and realised we disagree and I am woefully well informed. We don't seek each other out, just avoid. There also transwomen that I know and am friends with, socialise with etc.

The OPs question seems all about perceived threat in the street from unknown others. If someone was behaving in a threatening manner it would not matter at all if they were male, female, trans or not. I would avoid. I don't feel threatened by many and only when there is cause (behaviour/history).

I don’t know where you learned that from because it’s not true. There are no trans men winning Olympic powerlifting.

testosterone is a performance enhancing drug though so it does make them stronger and more aggressive than other women. The Swedish cohort study showed that males with a trans identity retained male levels and patterns of offending, and females with a trans identity trended closer to male criminal patterns. I think we’ve seen an example of this in America with at least one young woman with a trans identity doing a mass shooting.

This isn’t true. Even elite female athletes doping with testosterone never reached anywhere near male levels of performance.

My dp’s uncle is trans, has been for many years, I have known him for many years and I am not scared of him at all. He doesn’t require any of the family to call him she or ask for special treatment. We just all know and have sympathy that this is how he feels about himself. He doesn’t think he is an actual biological woman, he gets on with his life and he causes no issues at all.

But I came across a younger transwoman in an art gallery recently, it was obvious that he was a man - not sure if it was his height or deep voice or just the way he carried himself but from the very first moment, I knew he was a man and a man about whom immediately I felt scared. He was loud, intimidating and taking up a lot of space. I immediately and instinctively thought I need to avoid this person, not attract his attention by accidentally catching his eye etc. Just like I would do in the presence of an aggressive man who was looking for trouble. I quickly slipped away and went to another room in the art gallery & kept an eye out for him to avoid him.

So I think it very much depends on what kind of the man the transwoman is. A scary and agressive man - whether they are wearing trousers or a dress - I will always instinctively know to avoid them for my own safety as a woman.

This. There are a few transexual men who are just trying to accommodate the cards life dealt them. They know they are men, deeply wish they weren't and live with the tensions as best they can. However they are an extreme minority. The anger/rage against women that most display is enough to be wary of crossing them so if I see them in public I tend to avoid contact.
