Linehan tweeting misogyny and racism now

Seems to have completed his lurch to the far-right - in addition to his vocal support of Trump, I suppose his 'defender of women and girls' schtick doesn't really wash any more...

If you read through the thread, you will see plenty of posts suggesting Graham's retweets reflect badly on GC women. For ... reasons.

Ok I still didn't read that as people on here being responsible for him or what he said.

I think the trouble on line is it doesn't always seem obvious what is meant. Not knowing him I just read it as he was endorsing what he was retweeting but others who know more about him read it differently. Not sure now what he really meant. Maybe that's the trick, leave people guessing.

I don't think there's any great plan behind it. I think he's just a bit haphazard/impulsive and tweets stuff without thinking.

I'm no great fan of the man, but I doubt he genuinely believes women's voting rights should be taken away.

As I said I know very little about him and I've definitely never read a tweet of his before. Is he a comedian? I don't think I'd know him if I bumped into him.

I certainly hope you're right, I don't like the idea of losing the vote although as I'm not American I suppose it doesn't apply to me anyway.

He's the writer behind Father Ted (and other stuff).

No reason why you'd recognise him as writers don't tend to get the spotlight.

Oh so comedy writer rather than comedian. I didn't like Father Ted so maybe that's why his name doesn't register with me.

I liked the IT crowd, never seen the others. I thought the IT Crowd was brilliantly cast.

Just for context, as I've just remembered this.

Linehan was part of the campaign to repeal the ban on abortion in Ireland in 2018. That was in a voluntary capacity, no need for him to get involved. I don't even think he lived in Ireland at the time.

So I really doubt he retweeted that post fully understanding what it meant.

Yes, it was when he was already posting about the trans issue. I think 2018 he got banned from Twitter for misgendering, only got the account back when Elon took over.

I suppose it's a lesson to not retweet things if you don't know what they mean. I think I need to go back and actually check what the whole tweet was.

It occured to me today - I cannot recall a single TW fighting for women's suffrage.

So odd, right?

I mean TRAs always tell us how TW have "always been here". And how they are the most Feminist of women, not a threat to women but one of us.

But actually, of all of us, TW had the vote first. And were also allowed to own property and take public office when women weren't.

So really, is it not weird that back in the day, when these most marginalised of women actually had far more economic and political power than yer bog standard female person did, they don't seem to have done one whit of a thing to help their oppressed "cisters" in the way they are expecting said cisters to help them today?

It's almost as if (whisper it....) either TW didn't exist all along in the way TRAs claim they did, or TW don't really care about female people at all in the way TRAs claim they do.

I reject your framing.

Corbyn is on record for decades as supporting anti-democratic, theocratic and misogynist regimes in the Middle East (and elsewhere) as part of his anti-capitalism set of beliefs, as well as frequently making anti-semitic statements. When this behaviour is pointed out to Corbyn he prevaricates and denies.

Graham Linehan is on record as supporting women's groups and women's rights, he has platformed women's writing/voices and, by his own statements, is known as considering feminism to be a good thing. Linehan's retweet was explained to him by women who disliked it and he acknowledged his error.

You'd think it's quite easy to accidentally like a tweet (albeit not being on Twitter, I don't really know), it's a lot more difficult to show up at the graves of Munich Olympics hostage takers with a wreath in hand accidentally.

You are right

But I can think of at least two male posters who claimed to be the ‘first female’ in roles and then declared that they opened up those roles to ‘other’ female people.

It is remarkable when you see it.

Then I can only assume she isn’t actually interested in his motives for retweeting the statements that she cites, despite asking why he did so,

She doesn’t want to “discuss” it, she just wants to use the tweets of a hot headed individual to smear by association.

She seems to hold women here responsible for what Graham Linehan does online, and to use his actions to “prove” something to herself about the character and integrity of every woman who do not want males in female spaces. Thus she can avoid thinking too hard about anything of substance.

She certainly isn’t interested in discussing anything, just mudslinging and finger pointing.

Rule One of Misogyny: Women are responsible for what men do.

You do that. But however genuine some of its proponents are, the gender critical movement has now largely been exposed as a beard for far right ascension so it won't be long now before the 'what is a woman' gotcha distraction wears thin on those affected by the affordability crisis….& those folks are angry as f*.

Lie down with dogs catch fleas?

By this reasoning, vegetarians are beards for Nazis because Hitler was veggie.

People can agree on one issue and disagree on others. Glinner swinging rightwards doesn't magically make sex immaterial in law and policy. If Glinner said that oxygen was essential for human life, would you hold your breath?

Likewise, people can do good things for impure motives, and bad things with pure motives. I don't care what Trump's motive is for banning men and boys from women's and girls' sports and prisons: the outcomes are very good because women are safer in prison and have fair play in sports.

In the most recent English elections, Reform won seats where poor people live. The angry poor people are not swinging left, but right. They don't trust Labour or the Greens to manage the economy.

It's utterly terrifying how out of touch the Left are. Trump's "Harris is for they/them. President Trump is for you" slogan even being possible is a symptom of how out-of-touch the Left are.

And even if it was a 'far right grift', what of it?

Well its important to expose to the 'normies' they are being 'had' by fear mongering headlines. The last thing the far right care about is affordability & they are scapegoating muslim immigrants & trans people to get around that.

And the association is not healthy for the long term survival of the single sex space cause. Even many gender critical devotees acknowledge this because of the inconsistency between a political movement that's anti rights aligned with one who purports not to be. You can't have it both ways & be taken seriously as women's rights movement. And if you attempt to you become suspiciously carrying water for fascism.

Personally, I'm sympathetic to some single sex spaces exemptions being enforced like elite sport, hospitals, prisons, refuges & more evidence for trans youth medicalisation. But where that becomes toxic for me is the necessity to demonise & dehumanise trans people to achieve this. That, sits squarely in far right enabling territory.

It's really shitty to treat people like one sex some of the time and the other sex the rest of the time. The inconsistency will confuse them and everyone around them. The only fair thing to do is treat people like the sex they were born as 100% of the time.

But where that becomes toxic for me is the necessity to demonise & dehumanise trans people to achieve this.

We don't do that. They bring themselves into poor repute. You need only look at the conduct of the polycule, Tiffany Scott, Sarah Jane Baker...

I get it. Noone likes to hear how their approach enables anti rights movements hence the irrational defensiveness. But carry on ignoring your culpability & you will sink your own ship. People in general can accept balancing of rights if there is fair & a just rationale to it. But what they won't accept is cruelty for the sake of cruelty & this is Linehan's whole MO.

You are getting in your own way.

Amnesty UK are finding out the hard way that branding people "anti-rights" without evidence is a bad idea.

Voting Labour in my current and previous constituency would be enabling an anti-rights movement intent on taking away women's single-sex services and the language we use to describe our shared experiences as women. This is evidenceable just from the Denton's strategy document.

Yet you want me to disavow right-wing people who are protecting women's rights? No. People's economic circumstances can change over time but their sex can't. I refuse to allow the price of economic justice to be the erasure of women's rights.

According to human rights expectations they have like the right to privacy, identity, medical care, free movement & the right not to be othered.

How are trans-identifying people denied the right to free movement? That refers to the right to leave your own country and return, not entering facilities created for the opposite sex.

The right to privacy doesn't mean a right to deny reality and expect others to believe that lie or act like they believe the lie. You can't prevent people from saying "no mate, you're a bloke" by getting a gender recognition certificate from the govt.

The right to medical care is limited to "adequate for health and well-being". It doesn't confer a right to cosmetic surgery and treatments, especially when those treatments evidenceably make trans-identifying people physically less healthy, e.g. osteoporosis and sterility.

Where in either of UDHR or ECHR is there a "right to identity" or a "right not to be othered"? I'll wait whilst you try to find them.
