6/3 exactly along the political lines. How did the left leave peoples rights behind like this?

The first opinions are in the transgender athlete cases. In B.P.J., the court holds Title IX allows schools to provide separate women’s and men’s teams defined by biological sex, and WV has permissibly maintained female sports for biological females....

Good news. So will this see Republican states banning boys in girls sports and Democrat states continue to promote it?

SirChenjins · 30/06/2026 15:52

It's a positive step in the right direction, but obviously still a long way to go yet.

In years to come we will shake our heads in wonder at this madness.

Here in Maine boys who identify as girls are allowed to take part in girls' sports at school. Not sure about college sports. It's a very trans-friendly state for the most part.

America is a basket case.......How long is the madness going to last?

As pp said, a step in the right direction.

Good! In the same day the US Supreme Court has gone part of the way to restoring women and girls rights to fair and safe sports and also upheld the constitutional right to birthright citizenship. ‘Conservatives’ sometimes understand what needs conserving.

Page 36 has not gone down well with the TRAs:

"Men and boys with gender dysphoria are not women or
girls, even if they believe that they are"

It is more male entitlement friendly, really. I doubt the girls who identify as boys as swooping in and unfairly grabbing any places, medals and opportunities from boys. If it were so, the whole pretence of someone being the opposite sex wouldn’t have been entertained for one second.

No, it’s only girl’s rights which are being abused.

DramaAndBullshit · 30/06/2026 20:52

There are very few things this US govt is doing right, but this is the exception. Sadly I fear it’s not being done to preserve women’s rights or protect them, but I suspect it’s rooted in homophobic/religious ick. But, even a broken clock is right twice a day…..

Terrible for girls and women then.

I think a couple of Democratic states have ballots about this as an addition on a forthcoming election. I'm not clear on the details. Maine was one of them but the Governor scratched it because he claimed there were doubts over some of the names who had called for it(?).

Male cheat friendly Maine.

Interesting that of the nine judges, three came down the other way.
Direct conservative/liberal divide.

The allegation was that there were insufficient verified signatures on the petition for it to be on the ballot in November - there appeared to be enough signatures at first but some were unverifiable. I signed the petition when they were gathering signatures but I don't know how they went about verifying them.

lcakethereforeIam · 30/06/2026 22:01

It's not entirely clear cut, I got this from the NY Times (I couldn't archive it)

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writing for the three Democratic appointees, issued a partial dissent. She agrees with the majority that state bans on transgender athletes do not violate Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools. But she says that Becky Pepper-Jackson should have been allowed to pursue her constitutional challenge to the ban under equal protection principles, in light of her particular circumstances.

Partly constitutional, partly be kind and partly because of PBs and lack of normal male puberty?

They're now relishing the problems that are likely to arise identifying all the male cheats. Which I admit will be difficult especially in kids that are prepubescent.

Is it Helen Joyce who's trying to develop a cheek swab that's quick, simple and cheap enough for anyone to use?

I thought the governor of Maine was a women, didn't she have a run in with Trump over this, not long after he signed that EO, and he cancelled the states federal funding because of it.

Exactly. Trans friendly means men and boys friendly in the vast, vast majority of cases. Women and girls? STFU and stop moaning.

You could be right. The NYT article actually said it was the State's Democratic Secretary of State but didn't give a name. I misremembered it as the Governor. I'm assuming they're not the same person.

Really?! It’s clear from the judgment it’s rooted in the understanding that men/boys aren’t women/girls and there’s a sex based difference in sport. You know, normal thoughts.

Rather than wonder why the 6 conservative judges voted for common sense, it’s more interesting to ask why the 3 liberal judges think women and girls don’t matter.

I suspect the liberal judges don't want to rock the good ship 'Progressive'.

Excellent. Sensible decisions in sport at last. Ridiculous that it had to go to the Supreme Court for the blindingly obvious to be enforced.
