who menstruates?

OriginalPunchbowl · Yesterday 20:24

Seen in a wokeworkplace toilet in Scotland (I have NCd for this) The label on the tampon basket says:
Who menstruates?
girls menstruate as well as women
intersex people, who have both male and female reproductive organs
non-binary people with female reproductive organs
some transgender men

The second one doesn't feel correct to me: I'm aware that "intersex" is no longer used, but even in ovotesticular dsd, is it right to say "both male and female reproductive organs"? can anyone advise please, then I can pass it on to the wokesters management?

who menstruates?

🙄
What a load of twatery

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · Yesterday 20:29

Well, if it says "some transgender men" then it should logically say "some girls" and "some women" surely?
Sorry, OP, I know that's not answering the question you asked.

Neversofaraway · Yesterday 20:31

What is the point of the label? At any given time, some women menstruate and some don't. Who is this label aimed at and for what purpose?

HouseOfGoldandBones · Yesterday 20:33

No, it's not correct OP.

Fgfgfg · Yesterday 20:34

Take the completely unnecessary label off and replace it with one that says 'help yourself if you need anything'. I'm post menopausal and nothing in there is of any use or interest to me. Doesn't stop me being a woman though.

The sign is accurate as far as I can see. It’s only listing those who are XX female

As for your ovotesticular dsd 46XX question, yes these intersex females (XX) have both male and female reproductive organs. Ovo= ovarian tissue=female reproductive organ and testicular= testicular tissue= male reproductive organ.

Probably educational.

Trayfevers · Yesterday 20:38

So basically , women and girls menstruate. They could have saved themselves some words

It’s refreshing to me to see a list that excludes transwomen.
just saying women and girls would make the tw are women cadre happy.

People with ovotesticular disorder have both male and female tissue, they do not have both male and female organs.

It’s probably something I would ignore as I’m not the educational target market (I think I have a good grip on how menstruation works, like most people who do). It’s a bit like when they role out diversity training and are usually preaching to the converted (the misogynistic, racist, homophobic, etc., people don’t tend to attend, or if it’s mandatory they don’t seem to take it in or learn anything from it).

Looking forward to seeing what signed they have above the toilet roll…’Who shits….?’

Fgfgfg · Yesterday 20:43

If you really want to mess with the managers heads tell them that by purchasing products with 'hey girls' on they're being transphobic. Then suggest it would be simpler and more inclusive to just have 'help yourself' on something less transphobic than what they've bought.

hholiday · Yesterday 20:46

how creepy. Putting weird political and wildly off the mark messaging to women and girls on sanitary products.

Well they can fuck right off.

People with ovotesticular disorder have both male and female tissue, they do not have both male and female organs.

Some have both. The definition only requires chimeric presence of both male and female reproductive organ tissues because there are varying degrees of organ completeness and/or fertility. You can have testicles, penis, vagina, ovaries and uterus with this disorder or be as ambiguous as a Barbie doll. They have a Prader scale to describe the spectrum within this DSD.

Ovotesticular disorder of sex development is a rare form of disorder of sex development that manifests as the presence of either an ipsilateral gonad with ovotestis or bilateral gonads with separate ovary and testis (1). The clinical phenotypes of 46, XX virilized patients are varying degrees of external genital virilization with internal genitalia hypoplasia and urinary malformation (2). The diverse clinical manifestations and complex urogenital malformations often lead to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment of patients (3).

WearyLady · Yesterday 20:51

Twatery of the first order. Stop the virtue signalling and just say ‘Help yourself’. I’d remove the sign.

So if you don't menstruate you aren't a woman or a girl? I'm pretty sure you don't mean that.

Are you sure it's exhaustive though?

What about agender people? What about demibois? What about XX people who identify as trans women?

Seems to me it's like trying to name the ocean by naming every beach, inlet, shoreline, fjord, strait, sound...

So much easier when the words Women and Girls were all we needed to capture the female half of humanity in all our range and diversity, instead of words that being used as labels for some men's personality traits.

minipoodlemum · Yesterday 20:58

What a ridiculous notice, I would be pulling it off and sticking it in the bin. People (Women) who menstruate know whether or not they need the products in the box, who needs a sign?

XX people don’t identify as transwomen.
Agender and demibois are under the non binary umbrella afaik

The important thing to me is transwomen and XY are being excluded.

editmg to ask, which items on the list are words that being used as labels for some men's personality traits.?

Jesus. ‘If you’re caught short, or are short of cash, help yourself’

Life really doesn’t have to be that complicated.

There is so much weird messaging around periods these days. I was on a train the other day and the toilet had a sign in it saying that anyone needing a tampon could go to the buffet car and get a free one if they uttered a strange codeword phrase.

I can't remember what the phrase was, but it was along the lines of the "Angela" phrase that you can use to alert bar staff etc if you are in danger from a man. Something like "A cup of tea for Deidre please".

WTF? If they want to offer free tampons, why can't they just say "Go to the buffet car and ask for a free tampon"? Or ... why can't they just sell tampons for a reasonable price?

What are they trying to teach us by going back in time forty years to a world in which period products were a shameful secret?

And why are they giving free tampons anyway? It feels like they are trying to create this idea of menstruation as a campaigning issue to replace the old-fashioned idea of women (i.e. actual women) as a group for whom it may be appropriate to campaign.

It's like they have some memory of the idea that women are a distinct biological group with distinct needs, but since that is a "transphobic" idea, they just settle for focusing on menstruation as a kind of proxy for the demographic formerly known as women
