Bluestocking Women’s Pub - it’s Maytime!

Welcome to any women who want the company of women!

Thats it really….ok so this place is staffed by gerbils with the occasional quokka or capybara but it functions like a friendly pub where you don’t have to know what’s going on all the time.
The drinks don’t intoxicate and the food is delicious yet healthy so please do come in.

Maud is not happy about the rain. She had plans with Fawley in the garden.

We had some rain here, eventually. I'm about to go and poke a veg bed to see how much.

Enough to wet the top millimeter or so.
As DM used to say, just enough to lay the dust.

I've hung the washing. Hoping that + BH weekend will result in the much-needed downpour.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/05/2026 09:53

The little gerbil Grevere has offered to watch over my fritillaries next spring. She said she'll let me know if she sees any signs of lily beetles (she calls them 'red coats'). The capybara wouldn't let the demonstrating beetles into the pub. What with them wearing their own poop 💩

My knees and calves were aching after the walk we did yesterday to see the ring ouzel but they're feeling better this morning.

Bar gerbil, could I have museli with runny honey, Greek yogurt and fresh berries? And a pot of tea? Thank you.

MarieDeGournay · 03/05/2026 10:01

Morning Dex, morning all.

It's kind of drizzling where I am in the east of Ireland, nothing out of the ordinary, though 'lovely day with blue sky and sunshine' had been established as 'the ordinary' for all of ...oooh, four days running I'd say🙄
I haven't seen the weather maps, it amuses me to see where the weather is coming from, so I can tell which Stockingers will get it first, us or youse.

Chickadeeinme, having read your book, I can guarantee that the seven people
who bought your book yesterday are in for a treat and I wouldn't be surprised if more sales resulted as people buy another copy as a treat for their poetry-loving friendsSmile
I'm staying out of the ethics of lily-beetles' right to life - I try not to kill things just because I don't like them, and also squashing things is yuk.
Having a special point-handled spoon to stab them to death is, frankly, a tad disturbing...

It rained a bit but nothing special.

I need to buy jeans. I haven't worn them in years but I need some casual trousers for the summer to cover my compression socks. I wear boots with them and I totally rocked a summer dress with black socks and the boots yesterday. But it occurred to me that jeans would work.

But when I look at them I don't know what they are!!!

Mom jeans anyone? And what's the difference between barrel leg and wide leg? Any info would be gratefully received.

I don't dare go on the Style pages. Those women are far too fashion-forward for me.

I saw carrot leg jeans being advertised in M&S yesterday 🫣
I think barrel leg go wide around the knee and narrower again at the ankle, while wide leg are wide all the way down. Disclaimer: I wear straight leg jeans and wide leg linen trousers. I have never bought or tried on barrel, carrot, mom or any other sort of jeans!

RandomHypatia · 03/05/2026 11:04

I keep it simple with sienna supersoft straight leg, high waisted M&S jeans. They're not great quality though, so I should find something better.

RandomHypatia · 03/05/2026 11:05

I have quite short legs though, so the wide ones look silly

EmpressaurusKitty · 03/05/2026 11:19

I wear M&S Sienna extra short, but I’m a shortarse & they’re the only ones that don’t need tucking up.

Magpiecomplex · 03/05/2026 11:30

I wear the M&S magic straight leg jeans because I find they go in at the waist more, and despite (still) being very overweight, I'm an hourglass with a smaller waist and big hips.

MyrtleLion · 03/05/2026 11:53

Ooh, they do look nice.

I was thinking Tesco rather than M&S 🤣

Magpiecomplex · 03/05/2026 12:02

I don't think I've ever had Tesco jeans. Asda jeans, when I was buying them when the boys were little and I just wanted cheap stuff I didn't care about, had no shape to them at all and I needed a belt to stop them sliding gracelessly to the floor.

Chickadeeinme · 03/05/2026 12:13

Alas, no M&S in Maine but I find J Jill jeans usually fit me. I like straight leg best. Wide leg jeans usually need a shorter top so you don’t look wide all the way down, and I like a longer top to cover my tubby middle and bum.

AngleofRepose · 03/05/2026 12:25

Good morning, everyone!
Yes, I've worn JJill before, but don't think you can get them in the UK? LandsEnd used to have decent jeans ( they have a UK site), but don't know what the quality is like now.

When I can get to a superstore or into the Big City, I have bought Tu jeans from Sainsburys. I find their boyfriend jeans perfect for every day, because although I have put some weight on, I'm still pretty small and mostly straight up and down. Their girlfriend jeans fit more snugly, but are still comfy. I'm mostly concerned with comfort.

The only problem with Tu jeans is they come with a lot of stretch, so they're great for a couple of years, then they stretch out too much. After that, I use them as gardening trousers. Not sure I'll buy them again.

ps. I guess that should be "good afternoon!"

AngleofRepose · 03/05/2026 12:28

Gerbils, I'll have a large coffee with milk in a cappuccino mug and a croissant to dunk into it, please.

After the rain last night, it's humid today, and seems to be considering if we need more rain. The sun is very warm when it's out.

MarieDeGournay · 03/05/2026 12:45

Straight, bootcut, carrot, barrel, wide, boyfriend, girlfriend - there are almost as many types of jeans as there are genders, it would appear😁

I have no advice to give, sorry Myrtle Except that I'd avoid barrel style jeans, I have a creeping suspicion that they'll be an object of scorn in no time - they have 'only suit a very restricted number of people' and 'passing fad' written all over them.
And maybe buy cheap supermarket ones to give you and idea of which style suits you best , and then upgrade, relegating the test ones to gardening..

So I do have advice to give after allGrin

Magpiecomplex · 03/05/2026 12:53

I agree with you about the barrel leg, Marie. You have reminded me that I did wear bootcut back when they were fashionable. Never worn skinny. I have a decent set of pins, but they are shapely, not skinny. Also I struggle to get skinny jeans over my feet! 😂

AngleofRepose · 03/05/2026 13:01

I think the most expensive jeans I have ever bought are the And/Or Venice Beach straight leg jeans. I bought them in a size 10 many years ago, and boy do they wear well! Keep their shape even with a little bit of stretch. Straight leg jeans are very classic. No way I can fit into them now, but I keep them "just in case." - eye wateringly expensive at £90! but I sometimes see them on sale.

I avoid anything too tapered, it just reminds me of those awful acid-washed tapered monstrosities we used to wear in the 80s!

I've got to work out what to wear for this interview. I'm supposed to be getting a tour of the facilities, so it needs to be practical, but I also need to look senior and strategic and credible to both students and leadership.

Is there anything to be said for a teal velvet blazer?😁
note for newcomers: I strayed over to the Style and Beauty board a while ago, and fell head over heels for a teal velvet blazer.
Which I needed like I needed ...well like I needed a teal velvet blazer, plus I have no more room in my wardrobe for yet another jacket.
So good sense prevailed.
But you can see that there's still a hankering....

Now you mention it...
Probably too warm for it, but I do have one.

WearyAuldWumman · 03/05/2026 13:57

Yesterday was warm. I don't usually buy bedding plants this early in May but succumbed to a couple of trailing geraniums in B&M's.

Today it's only 7.5 degrees. Humph.

Drove to Cowdenbeath for the Sunday morning Body Balance class. The cheap knee pad I bought last week did help, but I was still struggling to avoid landing on my arse: "Move into your Downward Dog! Breathe! Lift your right leg! Now, raise your left arm - sunshine!"

I believe that this was the point where I was most grateful for the knee pad.

At various points, "Core!" was called out. I think this meant that I was supposed to pull in my stomach.

It does occur to me that a Downward Dog is possibly easier if you have (a) knees that work and (b) a body weight of 10 stones instead of 14.

Ignore the treacle scone crumbs, please. Why yes, I did stop off at Lochend Farm Shop for a breakfast on the way home and accidentally purchased a scone on my way out.

I do like a velvet blazer. I blame Mum. She had a lovely deep green one when I was about 7.
