Waves @SidewaysOtter seen you elsewhere. What would you like to drink?

@MarieDeGournay i was just about to order a search party out for you.

<waves to Hedgehogforshort>

Is there gin? Every time I’ve walked past I’ve always thought this is the sort of place that does a good G&T. Easy on the T…

MarieDeGournay · Yesterday 22:22

Here I am, Hedgey, thanks for thinking of a search partySmile
Page 2 is a bit late for for this, but anybody peering in the window wondering WTF this is all about -

The Bluestocking is just like any friendly local pub. Friendly local women-only pub. Friendly local women-only pub staffed by gerbils. Friendly local women-only pub staffed by gerbils which serves food and drink that taste delicious, but are magically devoid of troublesome stuff like gluten or calories or alcohol.

Other items on the menu are: fun, sometimes bordering on the silly; imagination, sometimes verging on the surreal - well you've already seen that on Page 1😁; hobbies and interests, such as needlework, languages and/or tractors; and very importantly - support when life outside the Bluestocking hurts.

There's always a warm welcome for new BluestockingersSmile

My only connection to an ancestral pile is that a forebear made some of the bricks.

There's probably an ancestral hovel still standing, 'sympathically extended to offer the benefits of modern living' (i.e. 3x the size it was to start with, and it now has glass in the windows).

My dad's cousin turned our ancestral pile into a hen house. Aunty Milanka was not amused.

@SidewaysOtter gin is my thing so cheers

AlexandraLeaving · Yesterday 22:39

Another gin over here please bar-gerbils. Harris gin please, on the rocks - no tonic. It's been one of those days.

Thanks for the new thread Edith.

So sorry about the job application situation Myrtle. Really galling. I agree age is probably against you - indeed, the combination of age and sex is probably an issue, not that it should be but that seems to be the way of the world. I hope things look up soon.

Well that's just shit @MyrtleLion

Have you talked to the National Careers Service? I honestly have no clue how useful it is these days but it always used to be good.

I do worry about that. I operate in a very male-domonated industry.

In the two out of 800 role the female chair was away on holiday with her kids. The rest of the panel was five men in their fifties including the outgoing postholder (should not have been allowed). They told me they would let her know their preference but she didn't have a right of veto. The Walrus immediately said that meant she wanted me and they decided on the middle aged man.

The first question was whether I was impatient because I had set out an ambitious program for the organisation that could take 2 or 10 years - I was clear that it didn't have to be rushed. For context I was asked to present a "manifesto" on the organisation's direction.

Apparently I scared them. Probably by being a halfway competent woman.

I'm off home to bed, I'll be taking one of the support camels just for, y'know, IN CASE.

(it looked so much like Rosie...)

Night, everyone.

No, you had Rosie. I had Gaynor in a furry red panda suit.

Boiledbeetle · Yesterday 23:00

Hello @SidewaysOtter I thought I'd been in a pub with you before but it must have been at the Tunnock and Merkin pub <checks photos> yep!

See @AngleofRepose... Gaynor in a red panda costume!

I was over on X when I saw this & thought Maggers would appreciate being appreciated.

Then I came back here & you'd all disappeared!!!

BTW, I have a question about viburnam opulus for @Magpiecomplex or anyone who knows the answer: I have a large viburnam opulus which right now is covered with pale lime green balls which will be balls of white flowers. It never has those fabulous berries - but is it a F which needs a M to ahem! fulfil it, or is it a M which will never have berries? How can I tell what it is & what it needs? I guess I could buy 1M & 1F, & one of the three should have berries - but are they sold by s!x?

Myrtle, if you make a list of everything you've done in the last 18 months, I think you'll be amazed at yourself.

If it’s the ‘snowball bush’ type of viburnum opulus, it’s sterile and named as such.

https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/66348/i-viburnum-opulus-i-sterile/details

as far as I can see it’s been bred to produce big sterile flowers rather than berries. We’ve got one because DHs parents had one and he liked it, I’d rather have the more delicate guelder rose with berries. It gets spoilt by viburnum beetle, idk how to get rid of them. (These are Bad Beetles, I’m sure no relation of our Beetle)

Could Dr Bessie make me up something to get rid of an annoying cold?
I think it’s nearly gone, but I’d like to get rid of it by the weekend because the cat rescue Kitty came from has a stall at a local fete & I’m helping.

I’m sorry about the job, @MyrtleLion.

That Vicks spray can help shorten a cold. It’s like sluicing your sinuses with battery acid but it does work. That or Johan Jashanda tea (translates as “essence of stuff”), you’ll probably get it in Asian shops. Works well with colds!

EmpressaurusKitty · Today 06:44

I bet my local grocer would have it, thanks @SidewaysOtter!

Oh blimey, fete season is starting, isn't it?

I'd better start training for my post on Tea and Cakes. It is dazzlingly well organised (not by me) though we had someone last year complaining that we didn't take cards and he had no cash. He did manage to find a few quid in a back pocket but did he seriously think every stall would have a sumup machine?
