Women: from an orderly queue at the bar or take a seat and grab a passing gerbil.

Men: turn left at the end of the road, keep walking until you find the Staunch Ally.

Bar gerbil a full fat coke please and a packet of Scampi Fries please.

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give you...

Gemini called Clara, who will park it in the garage with the Ferrari and the Lamborghini, and the Porsche and the Lotus, oh, and the Batmobile. Apparently she promised someone would be safer there than outside the Staunch Ally.

Clara was halfway to the garage before she realised she needed to get the car...

Lovely to have Gosie back! She seems to be expecting chilly weather though - that jumper...

You bought a cardi, FarriersGirl - you obviously picked a side in the 'Is The Cardigan A Fashion Misstep?' debate, good for you, it's not an article of faith, it depends on the cardi and I'm sure yours is lovely.

Isn't it interesting?odd?spooky? that so many of us have [or want to have] blue velvet jackets? except Errol who has a black one - but it's still velvet.*

Maybe that's why I soooo wanted that navy velvet blazer, it's something in the DNA of Bluestockingers, we are instinctively drawn to them...🙂

*could you 'casualise' your black velvet jacket, Errol, to make it more wearable?
According to the Style and Beauty thread, brooches are back😁so you could maybe boho it up a bit? Change the buttons to something more quirky?

...am I slowly turning this thread into a branch of Style and Beauty?!😧

WearyAuldWumman · 07/04/2026 18:40

I once had a long, black velvet jacket. It was actually long enough to look nice on my 5ft 9 (and slimmer than now) frame.

Mum referred to it as my "Doctor Who jacket". I'll have you know that I wore it to my HoD interview and got the job.

JanesLittleGirl · 07/04/2026 18:45

Nobody will be surprised to read that I have a velvet blazer in Burgundy.

You should have asked Gosie pick it up and bring it back with her....

I'll get my [navy velvet] coat😂

It will surprise no one that the Croc wearing beetle who lives in pjs or jogging bottoms and a t shirt has absolutely zero interest in velvet jackets.

And if you see me in one It's AI!!

Oh I want a blue velvet jacket but when you’re short you don’t get the choice, especially if you like to be able to use your hands.

Just checking in after a couple of very busy days.

How fascinating your Dad's story was @WearyAuldWumman but what a shame that you were unable to grow up speaking the language of your forebears and had to take the much more difficult route to learning it. One of my dad's best friends was a Polish man who had served with the allied forces and then settled in the North West of England after the war. His wife was English and I went to school with one of their children. I remember that he spoke to them in Polish.

I'm loving the accounts of the languages spoken by Bluestockingers and how they learned them. I think between us, we must have some knowledge of most European languages! I used to work near the French Lycee in Kensington many years ago and was always intrigued when on the tube and listening to the pupils, they would often change languages several times within the same sentence!

Does speaking food in 7 languages count as being multi-lingual?

I am currently regretting donating my much-loved velvet jacket to charity. The fact that it hadn't fit me since about 1995 is purely incidental. It was a lovely dark emerald colour.

Hedgehogforshort · 07/04/2026 19:25

Today i started beck on my gardening business. Mr hedgehog has joined and did fine under my command.

Reduced my work day by half and he did the jobs i don't much like (digging)

Not a velvet jacket but I bought this a few weeks ago in Forest Green and Navy on a Mumsnet recommendation which was a first!

Lovely! I'll have that too please. In black. Or ivory. Or both.😁
I like the company name too. Rhyming slang, innit?

I can order two beers in a lot of languages. Sometimes I can also say please.

Speaking of socks, as we were. This came up on LinkedIn. How magnificently nerdy - socks knitted to match soil horizons!

Thank you for this excellent idea. I need to make some for my brother in law. Will check out the soil and geology maps for where he lives.

Not just magnificently nerdy, but also magnificently English, I suggest - something I love about ze Eeeeenglish is that they do things like knitting socks to match soil horizons; or knitting little outfits for street furniture; or havie a group called the Red Barrows who do ...um.. 'aerobatics' with red wheelbarrows...
Imaginative, clever and delightfully daft. Love it!😄

I tell you what, there are lots of intricacies to transport policy that you could spend a lifetime becoming an expert in, but I loved finding out that England has a Roundabout Appreciation Society. It's one of those things you'd only find in England.

Unfortunately, their chairman was not Mr Zebedee.
