@AuntieMsDamsonCrumble @EmpressaurusKitty

DH's ex basically broke the law until singles were given permission to move in together. All through, she and her boyfriend spent half a week in each other's house. No one bothered them about it, though I was faintly amused when I heard that her boyfriend's adult daughters moved back in with him. I got the impression that she wasn't too happy - both young women had separated from their husbands during lockdown, so it was logical that they'd have moved to their dad's.

One of my cousins had a daughter who was working abroad when Covid hit, but she managed to get home to her parents in the UK before we locked down.

DH's granddaughter actually moved to an EU country whilst both countries were in lockdown, in order to do her term abroad and then moved back with her mum for Christmas. She opted not to go back abroad and finished the year back at uni, in a bubble with her housemates from the year before.

DH's death at home was treated as unexplained by the police because it had happened during the night and they couldn't speak to the local surgery to confirm that he was 'under the care of a doctor'. [Similar had happened to a neighbour a few years earlier, so I wasn't surprised when that happened, although the way it was done was pretty awful.]

It was several hours, about 6 in the morning, before DH was taken away and I recall being a bit baffled when the police asked if they could take me anywhere.

I phoned round people later that day to inform them and one friend offered to let me stay the night, provided I left "early in the morning before the neighbours see".... I declined.

The whole thing was quite bizarre when I think of it, in terms of how isolation rules were applied.

Right! Which gerbil do I need to speak to get a cocktail? What was that one that we use to drink in the '70s and '80s? A [Something] sunset? There was orange juice, grenadine....Can't remember what the booze was. Tequila, maybe?

At your service...

It’s an old one but irresistible.

Dave has been keeping me awake huffing and puffing…it’s a good name for a storm.😂 Right…earplugs in and lights off and may the gerbils come to all in need of their services.

EmpressaurusKitty · 05/04/2026 06:02

God, @WearyAuldWumman, I’m so sorry.

ChristmasStars · 05/04/2026 07:16

I'm so sorry to read the bad lockdown experiences of many on here. It was such a crazy time. I escaped relatively unscathed but the other three members of my family suffered really badly with their mental health for a long time after.

Thank goodness for the gerbils looking after us all now.

DeanElderberry · 05/04/2026 07:49

I'm back in bed - dawn Mass started at 6 when it was still dark, and there was a brief but brisk shower of hail during the consecration. It was lovely - I do prefer the setting of the one I usually go to, in a quiet spot just over the wall from a big lake, with trees and birds and bats and the graves of family and friends, but beside a nearly-800 years old ruined friary was good too, and the priest is a good preacher, stuff about light overcoming darkness and resilience and persistence and the past and the present coming together.

And because it was in town there was a nearby building and the local committee gave us tea afterwards.

About 140 - 150 people there, which is not bad for that hour.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/04/2026 09:18

Happy Easter everyone.
Dave is piping down (though he’s left quite a bit of debris on the lawn) and the sun is intermittently emerging.

Igneococcus · 05/04/2026 09:42

Frohe Ostern, Blaustrümpfe!

Still windy with lots of grey clouds but the Isle of Mull is all sparkly and white on the horizon this morning.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 05/04/2026 09:48

Happy Easter everyone.

That's a lovely mental image @Igneococcus

ErrolTheDragon · 05/04/2026 09:49

Dave has just hailed us. Hmm Glad I hadn’t ventured out yet to pick up sticks and foliage.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate!

(Happy chocolate-for-breakfast day to those who don't)

It's a lovely sunny morning and the willow tree is fuzzy with new leaves. What a nice day to celebrate rebirth!

MyrtleLion · 05/04/2026 12:48

Part of having a break over the last 10 days was to clear out the garage. We were so effective in other things (sofa-buying, restocking towels and rugs, birthday-celebrating) that we didn't get round to it. So we sort of had plans today to spend 30 minutes in the garage selecting obvious things that we were going to get rid of and then go to the tip tomorrow.

We made a spontaneous decision to drive to the tip today instead and it was wonderful! Five cars. Not busy at all. Really easy, no queuing. Took 20 minutes to get rid of a carful of stuff, plus 15 minutes driving in total. I think if we'd gone tomorrow, even if we went early, we'd have joined everyone else with the same brilliant idea.

As a reference point, I only got out of bed at 11am, and we had breakfast before we went out to the garage.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 05/04/2026 13:41

So please you are clearly feeling better @MyrtleLion and able to turn your hand to tasks you were unable to get round to when your were feeling so poorly.

Just heard that our local minor 'stately home' has had to cancel their Easter Egg Hunt today due to damage from storm Dave. Two marquees plus contents totally demolished. Such a shame for everyone involved. Apart from the obvious disappointment of the children, most of the activities are organised by local volunteers who work very hard to bring in money for the upkeep of the estate (not NT).

< muses> I wonder what they have done with the Easter eggs? .........

lcakethereforeIam · 05/04/2026 13:43

Perhaps the Easter Egg Hunt was a little more chaotic than they were planning? They'll be finding them for years.

Well, the wind has died down in Fife and it's lovely and sunny now.

Lots of primroses and miniature daffs in bloom in the front border.

I can see the white celandines opening in the side return. Annoyingly, I lost the note of the variety shortly after planting.

I planted celandine Brazen Hussy round the back at the same time and they're doing very well indeed. I believe that they can be a bit thuggish, but I've not had that problem with them. Not sure when I planted them - any time between '86 and '94. (After moving in and before getting married.)

The muscari in planters have survived. Again, muscari are supposed to be thugs, but those in the front border seem to have disappeared. shakes fist at grey squirrels

I did have some Rip Van Winkle miniature daffs, but they've all gone. Only February Gold and Tête à Tète seem to have survived the wet, clay soil.

I did try digging down and adding gravel etc when I first moved in, but eventually gave up: once I was past the brown clay, I hit blue clay. I should buy a kiln.

Sorry to hear that Beetle.

Have another Easter egg. They're medicinal you know?

lcakethereforeIam · 05/04/2026 14:55

Sharp knives are supposed to be safer than blunt knivesHmm Apparently you have to apply more pressure to cut with a blunt knife, while sharp knives will cut you with no pressure applied at all. This makes them safer. According to predominantly male chefs (chevs?) who've been taught knife skills at culinary school and can do that really fast chopping without looking.

Igneococcus · 05/04/2026 15:41

We got snowed on during our traditional Easter walk "to check if the Easter bunny lost some eggs on the way". My youngest is 18 and we still take some small chocolate eggs to drop while he is not looking (a lot more difficult now than when the children were little) so he can find them on the walk.

Ooh. An Easter egg. Thank you. xx I don't think I've had one (creme eggs do not count) in decades.

There is actually no chocolate at all in my house at the moment, unless you count the packet of vending machine hot chocolate. The stuff that resembles hot water with a brown crayon dunked in it.

Commiserations. I’ve done that too recently - I had a cheap but effective serrated knife which was perfect for various tasks including slicing our homemade flatbreads, which is a somewhat delicate task. It broke, so I bought a new one… the first time I used it I cut deeply into the pad of my left thumb, it took about a week of being firmly plastered to close up. Unfortunately it was the only one of my fingers which worked to open my old iPhone so I had to put in my code every time which was a pain.

And then I cut it again…

Im now carefully holding the bread with a tea towel and I’ve told DH not to use this knife as he’s on blood thinners.😬
