Men: turn left at the end of the road, keep walking until you find the Staunch Ally.

Bar gerbil a full fat coke please and a packet of Scampi Fries please.

We got away with lockdown very lightly. I wfh anyway, so the fact my collegues globally now were too and meetings were all online meant I had more contact with them. The local WhatsApp group was formed and we shared info and organised deliveries from a bloke who usually delivered greengrocery to the restaurant trade who added a few staples such as bread. Farm door eggs were abundant and the milkman did well (custard rather than yogurt became one of my staples). Then the farm shop which is based round an excellent butchery got up to speed with deliveries and click&collect. And albeit repetitive we could walk.

It was the youngsters who suffered, being cast out of the paradise of their university. DD and her BF went first to his parents and then to us. Quite tough for them but nice for us (fortunately he is a lovely young man).

Artemis II has gone around the moon, not to the moon.

We know that. That's why the gerbils were going to it, specifically to startle Artemis when it got there and found our furry friends already in situ on the dark side, waving back.

But then they decided the bar was cosier. Sensible beasts.

Why does this weirdo pop in to insult the Bluey every few weeks?

No clue. I'm too much of a halfwit to even be able to hazard a guess.

One-Day-Late hot cross buns taste nice, at least.

I have made an Easter cake. Chocolate sponge with fresh cream and raspberries from the garden that I froze last year. I knew they'd come in handy.

Must be the school holidays again.

Magpiecomplex · 04/04/2026 11:06

I started teaching between the first and second lockdowns. I found it quite incredible that everyone else was being told to stay well away from people and we were being told that opening some windows and not getting within a metre of the students was plenty.

Planet Of The Apes Never Trust Anybody Over 30 GIF

I think there's a campaign to get everyone to be dressed as characters from Planet of the Apes (apes or slave humans) for when Artemis II returns. Practical joke of the century!

RumNotRun · 04/04/2026 12:19

@PastaAllaNorma they look great! And @FuzzyPuffling your cake sounds delicious.

A general service announcement follows, overheard in Pedantry Corner.

Easter starts tomorrow, on Easter Day.
Also known as Easter Sunday and Chocolate Day.

Today is the last day of Holy Week, which starts on Palm Sunday. It’s Holy Saturday.

Easter Saturday is a week away.

DeanElderberry · 04/04/2026 12:37

Except for many of us the Easter Triduum started on Thursday evening.

DeanElderberry · 04/04/2026 12:38

You're right about Holy Week / Holy Saturday, obviously.

I am suitably chastised. Holy Saturday Hot Cross Buns then.

It’s OK to accept that you can’t understand what we discuss in here.

Is the sock-spammer still here? Gubbins is desperate for someone to listen to her triangle practice.

Colonel K is a chinchilla!? I always thought he was a guinea pig.

Douglas is a skye terrier! His character, in the British version, was based on Tony Hancock.

Professor Yaffle's voice was based on Bertrand Russell.

Can't you tell I'm just wilfing on the interweb.

I have baked MANY things in my new oven and the Uni student and her pals are here. It's lovely, although a bit crowded. Dark chocolate and orange cookies have made the kitchen smell lovely.

Pockets are brilliant, I love clothes with pockets in. DD always wears her brother's old PJ bottoms because they have pockets in. God knows why M7S don't routinely add pockets to women's PJ bottoms like they do to the men's. It can't all be the seditious leaflets.

Love that poem. Thank you for sharing it

Gloria has set up the microphone for her.

Gubbins well now perform her 4-hour triangle song written especially to celebrate the Bluestocking socks.

And I saw a little warbler in the garden and just had time to say to myself, Oh I wonder what that is? before it started chiffing and chaffing. And the buzzard with a nest at the far side of the field has been stretching its wings and dancing on the thermals.

What a beautiful image, and a lovely sound track in my mind ❤️

During lockdown we had to shield, due to DH's cancer. He got lots of Govt text messages basically saying "if you go out you'll die". We we not "allowed" to go beyond our garden for 4 months.
We had real difficulties getting food for the first 3 weeks ( remote location). Eventually we got a " Boris box" of basic food once a week. The oranges were covered in green mould and the tiny bottles of shower gel would strip paint. There was nothing for non meat eaters. And I hate Fray Bentos pies.

It had, and has, long term implications for our mental health.

I've been thinking about how the lockdown changed everything. Your story really brings it home.

A relative of mine died in a care home, unable to be with any family members for weeks. They had to stand outside and talk to her through the window.
