@BezMills yep - it’s alarming how similar Scottish Independence and Brexit playbooks were…

BezMills · 12/03/2026 12:15

I was really swithering on the indyref. I'm fairly sure I would have voted 'yes' but I really was in doubt, and had very respected friends on both sides with passionate strong opinions.

With brexit it was really clear and I had no doubt whatsoever. I'd just spent almost a decade working in various european countries, I'd become a 'citizen of nowhere' apparently (as we were called by some tory twit or other).

So it was quite funny to notice how different my thoughts were on both those votes and I guess over the years I have mellowed about brexit etc, despite being quite annoyed (to say the least) and disturbed by how that went and the aftermath.

I wonder if he'll talk about his brother in-laws criminal problems or the money that was taken from a specific fund ringfenced for aid for children elsewhere in the world and was sent to gaza just before his parents inlaw were released, or his other brother inlaw (the dr) who even turkey wouldn't allow in the country due to his alleged links to hamas

Yes, that very large (far more than paid by other countries I seem to remember) donation to Gaza just before the release of Humza Yousef's parents-in-law doesn't look great, does it? Yousef said that suggestions that the payment was irregular were a far right Islamophobic conspiracy. Yousaf condemns 'outrageous smear' over Scottish government's Gaza funding - BBC News
I also remember how the Scottish Health Secretary went to great lengths to try to get his £11K phone bill racked up on holiday by his children using wifi to watch football online paid for by the Scottish taxpayer, and was supported by Humza Yousef.

Michael Matheson resigns: How SNP minister's £11k iPad roaming scandal unfolded

MICHAEL Matheson announced his resignation this morning following the scandal over his £11k iPad roaming bill. The former health secretary racked up the huge bill while on holiday in Morocco over t…

Ah Matheson, peak SNP with the tears, snotters and regret - after he got caught.

adding to the shitlist as follows:

Neil Gray - still in post - getting found out for claiming chauffeur driven jollies to Scotland and Aberdeen football matches as work. You guessed it, he’s an Aberdeen supporter. Was considering “the social impact of sport” as part of his job. And accompanied by friends and family.
Also admitted to being in his phone trying to buy Oasis tickets whilst chairing a meeting on dementia. Backed to the hilt by Swinney. Presiding over the mess that is the Scottish NHS.

www.sundaypost.com/fp/neil-gray-trust/

Natalie McGarry - embezzled £25k from Women For Independence and the regional SNP branch, failed to hand over cash donations to a food bank. The list goes on, at least some of this was done whilst in receipt of an MP salary. Denies the lot. Ordere to pay back £66

Caroline Stephen - the councillor whose £4k council tax arrears had to be paid of after a whip round of her colleagues so she could vote in the council budget.

I could go on…..there’s a theme developing…

WearyAuldWumman · 13/03/2026 07:24

I actually fell for Natalie McGarry's pleas of innocence.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 13/03/2026 07:28

@WearyAuldWumman you must have been in the eye of that particular storm at the time 😱

I think that I was still an SNP member at the time, but I was never at any meetings etc. However, I saw and believed her pleas of innocence on social media.

BezMills · 12/03/2026 10:48

I remember the Indy ref, in which I had no vote (living as I did in England, having left Scotland in 2005)

There was a similar sentiment, with hindsight, that I saw with brexit a couple years later. If you had doubts about the grand project you were accused of not being a patriot and often even invited to relocate with alacrity (or shorter words to that effect).

Oh I was very much in favour of Independence, not for nationalism but because I thought Scotland was more socially progressive, and better on climate policies. Socialy progressive, ha! Little did I imagine where that would end up.

I think this fits here

I'm growing quite fond of David Hamilton. He doesn't mince his words.

Tallisker · 13/03/2026 10:49

We should send him a thank you card.

SirChenjins · 13/03/2026 11:24

Ooft! Well done that man - the SNP have been allowed to go unchecked for far too long.

BezMills · 13/03/2026 11:44

Yeah the SNP can't be trusted to mark their own homework (whatever is left after "the dug ate it")

He doesn't mince his words and I think as time is going on he's becoming more and more aware of what a fuck up the SNP government are.

His statement when that nonsense at NHS Fife happened (the Sandie Peggie "press release") was glorious. I could feel his anger through the words. I hope he holds them all accountable.

This money thing involving Humza is quite shocking tbh. How this isn't a bigger story I do not know. Bloody Scottish press/journalists keeping on side with the government. Although the courier and the herald were excellent during the Sandie Peggie stuff.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 17/04/2026 11:49

I am no supporter of independence but acknowledge Cherry was one of the more competent in the SNP cohort (admittedly a low bar) and should she have been more influential - leader perhaps - it would have been their best shot at it.

ArabellaScott · 17/04/2026 12:02

'Cherry’s central accusation against the latter, her former leader, is damning. As the book progresses, it only becomes more intense. “Nicola’s leadership,” Cherry writes, “has set back the cause of independence. It may also have irretrievably damaged the SNP. It has certainly damaged Scottish society, which feels more fractured and divided than it was at any time in my life.”'

No shit.

PeaceWhite · 18/04/2026 07:28

I had forgotten about this but I've just had a notification from Amazon that the book should arrive next Saturday

ArabellaScott · 18/04/2026 09:04

Thanks, Igneo.

"Swinney is still too afraid to lay down the law in the party and say ‘it’s time to accept that gender identity ideology is not part of the law’.

“He is surrounded by people who have embraced gender identity ideology … a lot of my cowardly former colleagues in the SNP who went along with it sat on their hands while people like me were called a transphobe and threatened with violence. If they were to change their position now, they would find themselves at the receiving end of the same treatment.

“But a leader shouldn’t be a coward. And John Swinney should have the courage to use the Supreme Court ruling to make the changes that are required.”'

ArabellaScott · 18/04/2026 09:09

'Many people assume that Nicola Sturgeon and I fell out over my opposition to her plans for self-identification of sex in Scotland. In truth, the roots of her antipathy towards me lie in the fact that I challenged her lack of strategic thinking in relation to independence and Brexit, and the way in which she and her husband ran the party.'

Embezzlement and incompetence - the plain, grubby truth of the matter. 'Gender' was always a Maguffin for Sturgeon. She thought it was a cost free virtue signal, used it as a tool for compliance. She couldn't listen to reason because she hadn't reasoned herself into the position.

The response to Cherry's memoir is just as childish and spiteful as one would expect.

As I said, no one cares. Ask any ordinary Scot in the street about Joanna Cherry and the reply will be “who?”

You are so wrong. I'm in Australia and I know who she is. The brave Scottish women who demonstrated that in fact MANY people care about actual women are applauded all the way over the planet to Aus. I think that might possibly be why you are here trying to undermine women who care.

Ah. A GC. Of course you know who she is.
