Guidance for schools in BBC news

'The legally-binding advice for all schools in England also says there are "no exceptions" for single-sex facilities, including toilets and changing rooms, with single-sex sports also protected.'

Vast Majority of parents should be told if pupils question their gender

A parent kneels in a modern kitchen, holding and comforting a school‑aged child who is wearing a uniform and a large backpack, as they share a close and supportive moment.

Tell parents if pupils question gender at school, government says

School leaders welcome the "greater clarity" on how to handle the polarising issue for parents and pupils.

Out for ten week consultation apparently, then it will be a while before it gets implemented. Plenty of time to destroy more lives.

crascenda · 12/02/2026 15:14

Very clear instructions guidance there, and I'm a bit surprised with its clarity TBH.

@SingleSexSpacesInSchools I've been following your threads intermittently, so I hope this is full vindication for you now. Do you think it is, and will the matter rest now if your school observes the guidance? Well done on your tenacity.

However. Do read this Telegraph article as well

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/02/12/school-pupils-allowed-to-change-gender-new-trans-guidance/

"Pupils will be allowed to change their gender at school, according to guidance published by Bridget Phillipson.
The guidance, published on Thursday, confirms teachers must consult parents and proceed with “caution” but should accept a child’s request to socially transition."

Very kind thank you - legal team has already reached out to me - there is a 10 week consultation period - so assume we are still going forward for now

This is what I’d like clarity on.

This is what I’d like clarity on.

On the face of it, if socially transitioning at school doesn't interfere with sex segregated spaces, it might not be the worst guidance in that respect.

But I would have to know more about what it actually means!

WallaceinAnderland · 12/02/2026 15:21

The telegraph is clear on biological sex though:

'While pupils will have their preferred pronouns respected in the classroom, children older than eight will still have to use facilities in line with their biological sex.
Toilets, changing rooms and any overnight residential trips will remain single-sex spaces.
The guidance, which addresses how to deal with gender-questioning children, says no child should be made to feel “unsafe” through mixed-sex sports, toilets, changing rooms and dormitories.'

So social transitioning is literally a pronoun. I think we can live with that.

Not if children or staff will be punished for not using wrong sex pronouns

MalagaNights · 12/02/2026 15:26

So it looks like single sex spaces are protected in schools.

But they still have to go along with an ideology that compells speech and pretends kids can 'transition'.

It's going to please no-one.

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 12/02/2026 15:27

If anyone can lay their hands on the actual guidance...

MalagaNights · 12/02/2026 15:30

So social transition in schools will be name change, preferred pronouns and opposite sex uniform?

But you'll still be treated as your sex for admissions, toilets, changing and sport?

That'll be great for the already distressed confused kids.

Madcats · 12/02/2026 15:30

I'd heard that the guidance was being released at 4pm; I guess the journos have a press release?

They may be going for a compromise. Let's face it, there is nothing that will please everyone so I think this is a sensible approach.

No more outside agencies coming into school to tell children they might be in the wrong bodies.

This gets updated every September usually so it'll get included in the 2026 update.

I'm really pleased to get the clarity on single sex changing rooms as I raised this years ago with our deputy head only to get a waffly "case by case basis" response.

Anecdotally, the teenagers at the school I work at are big believers in the importance of single sex spaces. The ideology in schools is driven by a minority of teachers, not the children.

No one should be compelled to use pronouns that don’t match someone’s sex. Particularly not children.

From that Reddit thread

'That bit about toilets is really worrying, because the implies that Phillipson has been told that segregation is legal and enforceable. Remember the parties in GLP vs EHRC will know the result already and there's no way the equalities minister wasn't told either'

I too did wonder if the two were linked due to the timing of the school guidance being released.

yes saw that

hate to put any trust in anything said there as it's clearly full of disaster fantasists, but, the logic seems good
