Olivia Colman is currently on the press tour for her new film Jimpa and has come out with some absolute corkers in an interview with them "magazine" including:

"Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I've always felt sort of nonbinary. Don’t make that a big sort of title! But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, “Yeah, I get that.”"

Which I can only assume means he likes it when she pegs him.

And a dig at some undefined group of naysayers and haters and meanies:

"Most of the actors were from, particularly in the Dutch side of things, from the queer community there; I’ve never been part of a more welcoming group of people. For all those naysayers or haters or meanies, if [only] they could spend the time with the most welcoming, kind bunch of people. I kind of want everyone to just come and say hi and actually feel total love."

Jimpa stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, mother to the non-binary Frances (played by they/them, non-binary, queer, transgender daughter of the film's director, Aud Mason-Hyde) who go to Amsterdam to visit Hannah's gay HIV positive father (John Lithgow, currently simultaneously scorned by the queers for daring to be in the new Harry Potter series, any by the meanies for talking shit about JKR). I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Congratulations Olivia on your brave coming out as a queer, non-binary, gay man, spicy-straight woman. You're so late to the party all the cool kids will find your identity embarrassing now.

Sometimes the amount of nonsense going round in the culture is hard to keep track of. Especially the stuff that originates in the Very Online bits of American culture and then seeps into the very different British context.

15 years ago I would not have predicted a subculture of gay Jewish nerds pretending to be pagan fascist bodybuilders, but there's no other way to describe the Bronze Age Pervert and his network.

And if the American Right has its quota of gay people pretending to be straight, the American Left has a much bigger quota of straight people pretending to be gay.

And when America sneezes Europe catches cold; and mix that into luvvies' well known propensity for being utterly ridiculous.

I haven't seen anyone being unkind about OC's appearance. She's an attractive woman; if she weren't she wouldn't have been nearly so successful as an actor. She's a very feminine woman. If we're going to define femininity as "looking like Margot Robbie", then hardly any women qualify, probably not even Margot Robbie before she's spent hours in makeup.

The basic problem with actors is that they get their jobs because they're good at pretending. Often the characters they pretend to be have heroic qualities or intellectual depth, and the actors either wish they were like that or believe they actually are like that. George Clooney has spent so many films playing the one honest man standing up to corrupt institutions that I think he's come to believe he is his character. No wonder actors are suckers for con artists like L Ron Hubbard or Gerry Healy.

It's incredibly homophobic for a heterosexual woman to say she really 'feels like' a gay man. She has 0 knowledge of what it feels like to be a gay man.

If we're going to define femininity as "looking like Margot Robbie", then hardly any women qualify, probably not even Margot Robbie before she's spent hours in makeup.

We've spent decades with Heat magazine and its ilk pointing and laughing at women (not always women, but mostly women) who don't look like an airbrushed starlet all of the time. Funnily enough, the heavily made-up and coiffured actress winched into couture and softly lit (not to mention the resultant photos being touched up) looks very different when she's hauling shopping out of the car in the rain or leaving the gym without make-up.

This is just an extension of that. If you haven't made the effort to look feminine - hair, makeup, frocks, heels, demure and coquettish ways - then you must be a man. If you don't want us to call you a man, step up.

And it's just as harmful to men. Don't swagger round like a dick-swinging Tarzan, necking pints and getting into fights? You must be a bird because you're not a real man.

Fuck that shit.

Yes and when men leered about how they were lesbians trapped in a man's body they were rarely called out for the fetishisation. Now it's positively celebrated.

10 or 15 years ago I dont really remember NB being a thing, one might have said they weren't a "girlie girl" or they were more of a tomboy, just different styles/attitudes of being a woman....like strangely, being female doesnt mean we all look/think/dress/behave the same way....sometimes we can even think or dress differently from day to day....and still be female!! Mind boggling!

That's just it, isn't it? Years ago - I was a teenager in the 90s - you just 'weren't a girly girl'. I mean, at that time there was more of a move towards being a 'ladette' anyway (not that that was a great thing, in hindsight, as it generally meant women behaving like male stereotypes in order to find acceptance).

And some days I am full slinky dress, heels, flicky eyeliner and lipstick. Other days I'm shorts and trainers while up a ladder fixing something. Do I have to hand in my ovaries on the latter days? Do I get them back when I've conformed?

I'm not sure they'd bother. Hislop was - and remains - a massive disappointment on all this. The Eye should have been all over the absurdity of the gender identity movement at least a decade ago, but according to Glinner Hislop said it just wasn't an issue.

They've hugely dropped the ball here.

Taking the piss out of her extremely insulting claim to identify as a gay man is not hate. You must lead a very sheltered life, as well as having poor recall of the oppression and physical abuse gay men and women faced some decades ago. I doubt you were even born then if that's your recall of the times.

She's a biological woman, very comfortable in life, in an opposite sex marriage, and has given birth. Indeed, she made a big deal in the first series of The Night Manager of being pregnant and having the role adapted around that. I saw the interview she gave at the time.

Claiming that she feels like a gay man is homophobic and needs calling out. Deservedly so. She should be proud to be a woman and teach her children that, not waffling some ill-fitting, idiotic, gobbledegook.

Hislop has pretended all this isn't happening and has pooh poohed anyone pointing out the impact on women's rights.

I don't hate her, I just find her embarrassing. She's basically pleading, "Yeah I know I'm straight but I'm not just straight - I'm surely interesting enough to belong on the alphabet somewhere, sort of...aren't I??"

...at a time when more and more self-respecting gays and lesbians are saying, "Please don't include us in your increasingly silly alphabets."

I don’t think she looks butch at all. She looks like a woman with short hair. The gay man thing is ridiculous.

I like Olivia Coleman, she’s so good in everything she’s in. Whenever you see her interviewed you get the impression she says the first thing that comes to mind, and is towards the slightly bonkers end of the scale. There’s probably a long list of ill advised things she’s said.

Don't you think she just plays herself, a slightly quirky/goofy person? Funny in the car insurance ad and Peep Show downhill thereafter.

I thought she was great in the crown.

Interesting, because I thought she wasn't. I thought she was great in Fleabag and The Night Manager, but terrible in the Crown. Her voice and mannerisms were wrong, she seemed too limited, too uptight. Quite the contrast to Claire Foy. It could have been the writing, but her performance lacked the warmth and nuance that Claire brought to the role. Just an opinion.
