Olivia Colman: “I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man.” 🙄

Olivia Colman is currently on the press tour for her new film Jimpa and has come out with some absolute corkers in an interview with them "magazine" including:

"Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I've always felt sort of nonbinary. Don’t make that a big sort of title! But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, “Yeah, I get that.”"

Which I can only assume means he likes it when she pegs him.

And a dig at some undefined group of naysayers and haters and meanies:

"Most of the actors were from, particularly in the Dutch side of things, from the queer community there; I’ve never been part of a more welcoming group of people. For all those naysayers or haters or meanies, if [only] they could spend the time with the most welcoming, kind bunch of people. I kind of want everyone to just come and say hi and actually feel total love."

Jimpa stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, mother to the non-binary Frances (played by they/them, non-binary, queer, transgender daughter of the film's director, Aud Mason-Hyde) who go to Amsterdam to visit Hannah's gay HIV positive father (John Lithgow, currently simultaneously scorned by the queers for daring to be in the new Harry Potter series, any by the meanies for talking shit about JKR). I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Congratulations Olivia on your brave coming out as a queer, non-binary, gay man, spicy-straight woman. You're so late to the party all the cool kids will find your identity embarrassing now.

Oh dear. Sometimes I’d just rather not know what goes on inside the real life brains of actors I love (see also Kathy Burke.)

Yes, but it's because they're luvvies, even if they try hard to be a bit sort of edgy or something.

Wow what a sick burn, you've really embarrassed yourself him there. 🙄Some of us female and male do enjoy that activity. If you don't enjoy it don't do it. It's not mandatory.

Ladamesansmerci · 07/02/2026 00:15

I'm a lesbian and this just isn't it. She isn't a gay man.

It's disrespectful to the fact that for most people, coming out is a stressful and anxiety inducing experience. It's disrespectful to the fact that in some places around the world, it remains dangerous to come out. As though being gay is easy or something quirky, and not an integral part of your identity.

Annoying AF when people act like they have any clue what it is like to live as a gay person when they aren't gay.

Is this a long winded way to explain she prefers her hair short?

This made me snort.

what a twat she is eh!

Oh gosh, I feel suitably chastised, thank you so much! Don't worry - I won't embarrass you by explaining the joke.

<Sniggers>

Such a shame a middle aged educated woman with a big platform buys into this nonsense.

brieongranary · 07/02/2026 00:30

When a straight man says "inside, I'm really a lesbian", in order to convey just how impressively rampant their sexual interest in women is, most people (especially women, whether straight or lesbian) cringe very deeply for them. Same deep embarrassment extended to Olivia Colman.

These slebs just can't bear to be ordinary, they are so wrapped up in how talented, special and fabulous they are that they cannot possibly deal with only being heterosexual, even though most of them are. They probably also believe we care about the drivel they spout, they aren't geniuses or massive talents, they just happen to be fairly photogenic, got lucky and are good at pretending. Probably shocked that they can't walk on water.

junipery · 07/02/2026 00:34

Once upon a time she was quite refreshing. I remember an interview where she admitted she didn’t do any research and it was an antidote to actors going a bit heavy on all the work they did and sometimes thinking they had the intellect of the person they were playing. But I suppose even late-onset fame will send anyone up their own fundament.

Snerk. Like that well known chap Judy Dench. The idea of unfeminine in thespie world is so bloody tame isn't it.

BeanQuisine · 07/02/2026 00:47

I'd describe her as a straight silly-billy.

KittyWilkinson · 07/02/2026 00:53

I really do cringe when straight people use the term queer to make themselves look a bit edgy.
I just want to tell her to get a fucking grip love you're embarrassing to listen to.

Iamnotalemming · 07/02/2026 00:53

It's quite late and I've had a long day ... but ... good grief what is she talking about?!

WhatterySquash · 07/02/2026 00:54

Sigh. Another short-haired woman who I once thought was cool and slightly GNC abandons women and insults gay men all in one go while thinking she's down with the kids Hmm

Bet the NB actor who plays her daughter is fecking fuming at having her thunder stolen by her "NB gay man" screen mum! Grin

I’m not gc but this made me laugh

plsdontlookatme · 07/02/2026 00:55

Yeah I find this way of going on cringey in general; agree with PPs that it's insensitive to those who have actually dealt with homophobia, and yes, reeks of "I'm too avant-garde to be heterosexual"

MO0N · 07/02/2026 01:00

Oh dear, how cringe

CrocsNotDocs · 07/02/2026 01:02

She can’t say she’s a woman who doesn’t conform to sexist stereotypes as this will upset the men in dresses who believe being a woman is nothing but sexist stereotypes.

dreichluver · 07/02/2026 01:04

Imagine making up a 'queer' version of yourself just to garner attention for a film you're worried will bomb. Honestly I think the writing was on the wall as soon as the director cast her 'they/them' daughter.

And will gay men be charmed knowing that Olivia equates them to non-binary females? I think not.

I've always found her insufferable. A 'luvvie' of the highest order.

PurpleLovecats · 07/02/2026 01:06

I can’t imagine living a life where this would prompt me to start a post on mumsnet.

Her opinion.

TheFireHorse · 07/02/2026 01:15

Probably the same life that makes a poster post on a post that is of no interest to them!

🙄

HelenaWaiting · 07/02/2026 01:19

"I’ve always described myself ... as a gay man".

That is not what I've always described her as.

Paladinski · 07/02/2026 01:20

She has a dreadful overbite that spoils her speech & also overacts somewhat, however she’s a versatile actress.

Hey, she more than proved her edge when she told the world she'd been a temp. And a cleaner. 😱 (Shock and awe). Despite going to private schools/Cambridge she knows what it's like in the trenches. Getting down and dirty with the proles.
