Come in. Yes, you’re in the right place. No, you don’t need to explain yourself.

Coats will be drycleaned before you depart. Bags won't be stolen because Gubbins will play her triangle. And you really don't want to hear it.

The gerbils run the bar.
They are small, brisk, and unionised.
One is polishing a glass with unnecessary seriousness.
Another is keeping the tab and will remember what you ordered last time.
There is a triangle involved. No one knows why. It keeps Gubbins happy.

Sit. Think. Drink. Join in.

The gerbils have it from here.

His whole story failed to hold water.

It was a bit like dealing with a 15 yr old on a debating team. He'd say one thing and then forget it the next minute.

I was late to that thread, but finally skimmed through it, noticing that there were considerably more deletions than usual. The mention of a 15 year-old reminds me that onepost said he'd been on oestrogen since he was 15. Now wondering whether this is a case of cause and effect...

IME pyracantha is the worst. I chopped a whole one down once in stages and took it to the tip.
Lots of antiseptic all over my hands...

I see your pyracantha and raise you berberis. We inherited a bed with 2 berberis when we bought this house and it's truly vicious stuff. Pruning it is horrible and I get spiked even through the thickest gardening gauntlets.

FranticFrankie · 20/02/2026 23:04

Phew! Just googled the difference between pyrocanthus and cotoneaster- safe

Berberis- terrible stuff that we also inherited. Tis vicious
Gone now- consigned to DH's bonfire as he's a pyromaniac

lcakethereforeIam · 20/02/2026 23:12

Berberis has its place. I think there's a native species, barberry. It has lovely scented flowers that pollinators love followed by berries for the birds. The dense, thorny growth provides safe nest sites for them too. If it's not suitable for your garden I don't blame you for getting rid though. I've been tempted because I like the wildlife potential and it does well on clay but I'm glad I never got any. It'd probably be a bit of a thug in my tiny garden.

WearyAuldWumman · 20/02/2026 23:21

I have Pyracantha in a pot where it won't cause problems. Unfortunately, I wasn't so smart when it came to Berberis...I haul it up and then a sucker appears elsewhere.

I’d report that to MNHQ if I was you.

I did and the poster has been zapped.

Nah, I got rid of one of those too.
Only one gave me infected scratches...

I will say for brambles, they are invasive and annoying and unattractive, but they provide blackberries and it's rare for scratch from a bramble to become infected.

We have a couple of pyromaniacs in our family too. They must be some sort of throwback to cave dwellers:

"Me chop wood - make fire"

They hog the BBQ and cremate the sausages too Confused

DeanElderberry · 21/02/2026 09:18

That reminds me that I should renew the attempt to extract brambles from the berberis before the bumbarrel returns.

I hope my sense of smell returns too, before the berberis flowers - it is possibly the sweetest and most mellow scent of Spring.

Y'know, I sometimes think that a hard-hearted, cynical, world-weary person who popped in here might think: 'Gerbils wearing little outfits? that's so twee🙄'
but having seen those Teddy videos, I think what we have is gritty realism in comparison.

The gerbils work for a living, they are unionised, they are not perfect [Glenda - step away from that swimming pool, it's water, not gin], they have their rows and disagreements - wasn't there a particularly unsavoury incident following a Scrabble game?

The Maintenance Team do proper, dangerous work - but Capability Capybara ensures that Health and Safety regulations are followed to the letter, and can been seen here carefully monitoring the safety of Gaudemar as she inspects the chimney.

Life is not all hee hee ha ha for cute little animals, you knowGrin

After inspecting the chimney, it's time for dance lessons
After all, it's Saturday
She's good isn't she?
I wonder what her fouttes are like though?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/02/2026 12:38

When ds3 was little, he decided to do an experiment to see what happened if he shoved screwed up paper down beside the lit lightbulb of his bedside light. Surprise, surprise, it started to smoulder, and when he heard dh coming upstairs, he panicked and threw the paper behind his desk, near his curtains, then insisted that there was no smoke in his bedroom. Dh did not believe him, because he has eyes and a working sense of smell, and tracked down the smouldering paper before anything bad happened.

MarieDeGournay · 21/02/2026 12:50

Wouldn't happen now Woley, would it? Those eco-friendly bulbs don't generate heatSmile
Isn't it funny that a child will think 'Oh dear I've done something dangerous by setting something on fire, I'd better hide it behind the desk near the curtains so I don't get into trouble for setting fire to something...'

I mean 'funny' in the sense that it shows how judgment isn't imparted a birth by the Judgement Fairy, and why we need parents😄

Gosh FranticFrankie I didn't know Capability Capybara was so multi-talented!
I'm not gone on her colour sense though... that orange with a pink tutu??😮

EmpressaurusKitty · 21/02/2026 13:07

Kitty is pondering standing for parliament on a female animal rights platform. She spent 5 years either pregnant or nursing, she knows all about the differences between the sexes.

Would the gerbils run her campaign?

Capybaras may be dichromats and so not be able to discern the reddish shades as well as we can.

I don't think we've had anyone but gerbils in our dance/ mime/ cheerleading/ Buzby Berkley productions. Maybe it's time. Her moment is near.

That last bit really gets me. Only in the Bluestocking!

Btw, I only got one star last night. How did you do, Deano? It's another 100+ on Tuesday - I'll be in that one. I've got a load of French castles lined up to go & pick from. Can't understand why I haven't won yet. 😁£££££££££££££££££££££££

Of course they will! Not sure what the one on the right is telling her to do, though.

Roughly 15% of human females, the original sort, are actually tetrachromats.

Crumbs. Yes, I have been Googling.

I have been edumacated. Now I'm wondering what it would be like to be a tetrachromat, but I guess that if you've never known anything else...

I recall as a child coming to the conclusion that we might all see the world differently and can never know what the world looks like to others. stops before brain implodes

Quick! Who do I speak to round her to get a soothing G&T?
