But people assume a Christian church in England will be mostly white people so they won’t be bothered. They just like getting angry about brown people, and in particular, brown men.

Why would boys over 12 get to participate but not girls, what’s the reason?

Actually ironically that church is in an area where the Christian population is more likely to be black.

sittingonabeach · 12/10/2025 15:56

What about boys between 12 - 17? It’s not just men and little children is it as male teenagers are allowed to run but not female teenagers?

That’s a misconception. My church is predominantly white, but the one down the road is probably 50/50, which is awesome. My church is a bit stuffy, theirs isn’t!

re this race, I think the issue is that it’s a race that excludes girls over 12.

If they separately ran a men’s race and a kids race, but had insufficient take up to organise a women’s race I could accept it. Though would hope they investigate alternative ways to help girls over 12 exercise.

It sends an awful message to the cohort least likely to exercise, that they aren’t allowed.

Its the belief of Muslims that males and females should be segregated after puberty so I suppose that’s why they’re using age 12.
I believe in equality and fairness when it comes to sexes but I can’t get het up about this fun run organised for charity by the males in a mosque.
Maybe they should’ve excluded all girls and women but maybe some of dads wanted to take their kids.

That isn't close to being good enough in the UK and the 21st century.

If the Mosque had organised a Fun Run for Men and Boys, and a separate one for Women and Girls, that would have been ok. Sporting events are one area where women and girls often feel more comfortable having a female-only event.

But there is a growing issue with fundamentalist Islam in the UK, and its requirement for Muslim girls once they reach puberty to cover up, avoid sport/exercise and to remain at home unless for school or chores. So family/community pressure is being applied to keep these girls' lives small, to prevent close friendships with non-muslims, and protect their 'honour' ahead of an arranged marriage within the family.

We should push back on this whenever possible.

I completely agree.

This isn’t a single sex event - and it’s not right

itsraining2024 · 12/10/2025 20:11

But it may have been men and women separate. Maybe some dad wanted to run with their young daughters and hence they changed the rules to only under 12. Jesus why is everything made an issue and seen as negative. Guess what maybe they should have told the dads whose young girls wanted to run with them they couldn’t do it.

There was no separate womens race

Did you think there was a separate women’s race @itsraining2024?

RedLeggedPartridge · 12/10/2025 20:23

It doesn’t look as though it’s a single sex activity with an equivalent for women.

To me it seems that it’s an activity where women and girls over 12 are not allowed to participate.

sittingonabeach · 12/10/2025 21:01

@itsraining2024 it’s very obvious why 12 is the cut off for girls.

zanahoria · 12/10/2025 22:06

Awards were presented to the fastest runners by Lutfur Rahman, the mayor of Tower Hamlets, who praised the event and hoped it would continue to grow.
When asked what he thought about women being excluded, he said: “What is important is that they have brought communities together. There is no room for criticism. There’s room for celebration and congratulating the fact that youngsters from a very young age to an elder who is 94 participated.”

So sad that 12+ year old girls have to hide themselves away because the men can’t stop having sexual thoughts about them. I hate Trump but in this he is right and we need to guard against Sharia law in this country. Just because it’s not our culture/religion, it doesn’t mean we leave them to it. We have to fight for all women in the UK. Our laws that protect women, should be upheld in this country. It’s a slippery slope.

If it's a men only run then that's fine - they are entitled to organise a male only run, the same as women are entitled to organise a female only run. But if they are allowing girls under 12 to run then they are surely falling foul of the equality act, as they are discriminating against women over 12 based on age.

There is no shared protected characteristic between all men and girls under 12 that is not also shared by women over 12 and therefore the exclusion of some females but not others is unlawful.

As a democratic society with a robust equality act, we should not be allowing men to discriminate against adult women.

Either all women or no women, or its an under 12s only event and no one over 12 may enter, but girls under 12 and men of any age is unacceptable within the law and allowing it is allowing misogyny.

Also, I'm struggling to understand his comparison to women only swimming sessions given that the runners were visible at all times, and presumably women weren't banned from the park.

Needmorelego · 12/10/2025 13:31

Do you attend this mosque?
If you do why didn't you organise a women's one?

It is the principle that people are talking about. The idea that once past puberty women and girls should retreat from public life.

Martharian · 13/10/2025 07:52

Maya seems to think it is compliant with the equality act.

Mosque in uber-liberal London enclave bans all females over 12 from charity park run...

Needmorelego · 12/10/2025 15:43

I have no idea but single sex groups are not illegal?
As far as I know.

It wasn't about being 'single sex' ( fun runs don't tend to be because it is not really about competition) it was about excluding females over the age of 12. Younger girls were running.

Shortshriftandlethal · 13/10/2025 07:56

Needmorelego · 12/10/2025 15:49

They let little kids join in.
That's all.
Their mosque. Their rules.
I am leaving this thread because it's clearly just exactly what the Daily Mail wants.
Anti Islam hatred.

Criticism is not " hatred".

Depends, does the ban include transwomen too? If so I'm sure the wokerati will praise them for affirming trans identities.

Good grief. Here we go again with shoehorning trans into every possible thread.

NautilusLionfish · 13/10/2025 08:03

Needmorelego · 12/10/2025 13:13

Maybe none of the women were interested.
I hate things like running events personally. I wouldn't be interested.

Are you interested in tennis? Golf, skiing, padel? Then other women shouldn't be given the chance to play these either? Come off it. There should be other contortions of arguments that would be more valid that "I hate running events" therefore it's OK to ban women from other running events
