JK on Emma Watson

Lowarnes · 29/09/2025 13:08

A stunningly perfect response to Watson’s recent comments. Haven’t seen a thread on this so thought I’d post below:

”I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.

I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.

Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn't want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them.

However, Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right - nay, obligation - to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.

When you've known people since they were ten years old it's hard to shake a certain protectiveness. Until quite recently, I hadn't managed to throw off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio. For the past few years, I've repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. Ironically, I told the producers that I didn't want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said.

The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma's 'all witches' speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself. Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.

Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood. Her 'public bathroom' is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door. Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who's identified into the women's prison?

I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.

The greatest irony here is that, had Emma not decided in her most recent interview to declare that she loves and treasures me - a change of tack I suspect she's adopted because she's noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was - I might never have been this honest.

Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother. Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public - but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it.”

JKR is perfection as always.

I have been pondering the content of EW’s note though. It seems intentionally ambiguous, which makes it all the more snidey.

While we are mostly reading it as a secret message of support, I think it could easily also be interpreted as ‘sorry you’ve been brainwashed by terfs and turned into a raging bigot.’

I just read the BBC article on this, it’s awful

They left out the really important bit “except one”.

"I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous."

No notes.

It's just perfect, isn't it? Icy cold anger, entirely justified, and delivered with such clarity ❤️

What did it say?

Edited

For the beeb it wasn't too bad but there was a line about JKR campaigning against tp having access to single sex changing rooms and public toilets which turned on its head what she's actually campaigned for.

I'll probably get a mealy mouthed response which will make me wish I hadn't bothered 😕

Ouch! 😂

The note, she’s right, was a terrible thing. Implying that EW knew the witch hunt was wrong, knew JK was being hounded, and just wanted to be ‘right’ so badly she didn’t care enough to be measured and balanced. Which is pretty revolting.

And while I agree with JK and @1offnamechangethat they don’t owe her fealty, they do owe her the start of their multi-million pound careers. And a couple of them have gone out of their way to not just support the ‘side’ they support, but to denigrate her personally.

This movement has always reminded me of the cultural revolution in China with its hatred of the Olds, and children attacking their elders, and extreme virtue signalling. This is a perfect example.

There was a time when mentioning the practices of the cultural revolution in relation to this topic would have resulted in a deletion. Happened to me a number of times when I too saw the disturbing parallels. How times have changed on FWR....I hope!

Apparently noticing how consistently crap and mendacious the BBC is on this topic makes one (according to some who post here) a GB News gorging, anti-license fee, right wing frother. Rather than a frustrated license fee payer who wants our supposedly neutral, public broadcaster to do better by women and girls.

Watson’s BAFTA speech in 2022 “I’m here for all the witches … bar one” was such a personally and professionally gratuitously nasty snipe, I’m not surprised JKR was hurt by it. JKR still said nothing at the time though (till today).

As does the Times article. Weird, because that's the really stinging comment.

Gloriia · 29/09/2025 16:00

Calm and measured response but I wish JK wouldn't give these Z list celebs the publicity. She should just ignore them and not dignify their crap with any comment imo.

I felt EW bringing this back up again was an attempt to redirect the news from her driving ban.

She talked about that in the same interview! Apparently it’s because she had so little experience in driving until recently 🤦‍♀️ As if that’s an excuse. No recognition of what going over the speed limit means for the likelihood of killing vs injuring someone. But it’s OK because the host of the show said he also had nine points and she thanked him for sharing his shame with her.

as though the friend was in fact their mother.

Nail on head.

They have treated her as though she was a mother that they didn't respect, but could be relied upon to absorb all the little needles and digs without ever complaining publicly.

I'm glad that now at least EW and DR will be in no doubt as to where they stand with her.

Yes, that bit was masterful.

That she thinks she can have a rapprochement at a time of her choosing is incredible.

The bit where Emma said "It's my deepest wish that I hope people who don't agree with my opinion [i.e. JKR] will love me" was so galling.

I think maybe because JK didn’t mention that specific bit (unfortunately!)

OuterSpaceCadet · 29/09/2025 16:02

It's really notable that JKR declined to comment on Emma Watson on many occasions previously. JKR understands power imbalances in a way that misogynists and trans activists refuse to (despite often exploiting said power imbalances for their own ends).

I guess now JKR considers that as an extremely wealthy adult, it's appropriate for Emma to be held accountable for the ways in which her activism hurts vulnerable women.

Tbf, she doesn't say 'bar one'

Iwantcollarbones · 29/09/2025 16:04

I really hope JK also sent EW a handwritten note saying that she was sorry before she posted that tweet.

But I bet she didn’t as JKR is more classy than I would be.

Spot on. The scoldings. The public denunciations and recantations. The zealotry. The dehumanisation. I might reread Jung Chang's Wild Swans to savour the parallels.

Even as a note of support, it's very cowardly.

Even my teen niece would have had more courage to show public support.

nicepotoftea · 29/09/2025 16:07

ItsCoolForCats · 29/09/2025 14:49

It's better than it would have been a couple of years ago, in that at least they don't describe JKR an anti-trans activist, and it talks about her concerns being about women's single sex spaces.

But this bit is a particularly egregious misrepresentation of JKR's views

"Rowling went on to suggest that Watson was "never likely to need" to use the types of single-sex spaces she has campaigned against trans people having access to, such as changing rooms and public toilets".

I mean, FFS, JKR does not campaign for trans people to not have access to changing rooms and toilets, just for men to stay out of ones that are designated for women. And the fact that they chose to focus on toilets (again 🙄) rather than prisons or rape crisis shelters.

"Rowling went on to suggest that Watson was "never likely to need" to use the types of single-sex spaces she has campaigned against trans people having access to, such as changing rooms and public toilets".

I wonder if they will correct that?

Butchyrestingface · 29/09/2025 16:07

Times like this it's a shame we can't see who from the HP cast, and thesps more generally, 'liked' that tweet. Grin

CatHugger · 29/09/2025 16:08

Superb. Classy, direct and unarguably reasonable. Well done JKR 👏

How terrible of her not to welcome threats of rape and murder not only against her but her family. I mean, that's what sensible people do when they don't agree with someone isn't it? Especially the ones who are claiming to be terrified and excluded and marginalised.
