I had my suspicions when CNN kept referring to the shooter as ‘they’ and said as much to DH.

Lo and behold, a crossdressing man called ‘Robin’ (formerly Robert) Westman.

Sadly she has more stripes than a zebra on her forearms, the red scar type, but we had a meeting with the student disability folk today as she has managed to work her way into uni next month. Proud doesn’t touch the surface of what I feel about the way she has crawled her way back through access courses and UCAS applications. She is beyond excited about all the equipment (laptops, printers, extra screens) they are willing to provide to accommodate her ASD/ADHD and is bouncing around the house this evening on a high. The trans trauma is very much part of her, but she is over the moon to be able to put that in her past and move forward with a fresh start. She is still uncomfortable with her body and how she is perceived by others, but baby steps…

I can't believe the BBC Six O'Clock News, their flagship programme, called him 'she' in their news report.
I actually feel quite tearful they've fallen so far.
Worked in their newsroom for 30 odd years, Warrington bombing, Shipman, Bulger. I just can't defend it in any way, shape or form. I was so proud to work there too.
And it will be a decision made right at the top of management. Absolutely devastated by it.

I'm very glad that SEEN in Journalism are onto this.

The BBC knows the sex of the shooter. There is no other authority like a court to blame for pronoun use. Minneapolis Police have asked media to stop using the shooter's name to deny him the reward of notoriety.

Yet the BBC takes it upon themselves to 'respect' his prounouns.

I hope they give a full explanation of how they came to this decision.

I love that the policy of many police forces now is not to name these people and give them a notoriety that transcends the identity of their victims, but prioritising the perps’s pronouns when making editorial decisions is, well, pretty despicable. This was a crime carried out by a mentally ill white male aged 23. Those are the salient facts at this stage.

I would be interested to understand whether there was familial neglect/abuse, a history of bullying that may have shaped and damaged him or contributed to his MH issues, because understanding this may help schools and communities to identify future potential shooters though - does the US have a Prevent style programme, for example that this young people can be referred to to ensure they are given psychiatric help as a matter of urgency? If not, do they need one?

Whether humans can change sex with hormones is up for debate. Many animals can change sex and the main driver in this is hormonal changes.

I leave that decision to the experts some who agree some who disagree.

However to hate someone or treat someone diffrrrnylh just because they are trans is wrong. That by definition is bigoted and discrimination

All the proper experts, the ones with long careers in science, publication records, experience in research and teaching, agree that humans, mammals in general, can't change sex. People who start social media posts with "biology teacher here" or similar usually talk complete nonsense on this issue and are not experts, and unless they provide some new and verifiable evidence supporting their claim their disagreement doesn't matter.
