If you don't think she is please don’t post. Please can you tell me specifically what she has said or done that is so bad. I promise that I will listen and not argue. If you could include links that would be great. If your inclination is to assume that I’m posting in bad faith and any reasonably well informed person must be stupid or bigoted not to know, then please just let the thread die.

There's a really easy way to not fail, which is to provide some evidence of JK Rowling saying something awful. There's also potentially a million quid in it for you.

JKR will pay me £1m for my opinion of some of her tweets as awful? Sign me up! I know it pains you to realise some people disagree with you. And they’re not even (sshhhhh, don’t ruin the narrative!) TRAs.

Which of her tweets do you think are awful?

Fucking hell.

Literally no other words.

But JKR is the problem, hmm?

eatfigs · 18/08/2025 20:46

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/08/2025 20:39

Exactly. Her series is called “Listen to Trans People” and it’s just grim and misogynistic comments from TRAs on social media. Why would women want to share spaces with men like that? It doesn’t matter if they are the minority, it’s completely male pattern behaviour and that’s why female spaces need to be female only.

An example of the sort of raw material she reads out.

The disagreement is fine. The reasoning and lack of evidence to back said reasoning is absent, never mind questionable.

Off you go then and evidence her transphobia and enjoy your £££. The last thing I’d be doing is hanging about Mumsnet when millionairedom beckons!

TheKeatingFive · 18/08/2025 20:48

I think the TRAs hate Mary Kate even more than they hate JKR.

There's nothing quite like having your words repeated back to you.

I don't recall her being criticised at all before she came out in support of Maya Forstater. So I don't believe that people think she is awful because of the rules of Quidditch, or child-exploitation, or somesuch. It's because she is transphobic (=doesn't subscribe to gender ideology and thinks it is harmful).

She supported a court action which has reversed the legal 'sex change' of GRC-holders for sex-based rights purposes. So TW will be excluded from women-only facilities etc. This is a bad thing!

TRAs work backwards from this to prove that she must hate trans people and be disgusted by them, and that is why she supports this terrible thing, but they've got it wrong, of course.

Anyway, by these lights, virtually everyone here is transphobic too. I know I am.

takealettermsjones · 18/08/2025 21:03

That's the million dollar question - what counts as transphobia?

Some TRAs would argue that seeking to restrict trans people in literally any way is transphobic. I can't remember enough provenance to find the link but there was an "open letter" recently about their demands, and it was basically just "let us do whatever we want whenever we want, just because we say so."

It isn't transphobic to criticise, debate this issue, or place restrictions on some trans people in some circumstances.

Carcass · 18/08/2025 21:03

I think she’s crap because she could have supported all the women’s groups over the last few years and we would have won this thing. Instead she has been extremely selective and , frankly, right, about who she supports. And I think she could have thrown glinner a bone or two over the years

Edited

But there you go again. I didn’t say transphobe, did I? And I don’t have to debate ‘evidence’ with you about my opinion just because you keep demanding. We’re reading the same information and feeling differently about it. That’s what having a different opinion is all about.

Ob course she is. Those messages pale into insignificance compared to JK mentioning that people cannot change sex.

Although in the spirit of openness I will admit that I did laugh when she offered to treat IW to a back, sack and crack!

How will you get the million pounds though? That's got to be evidenced as transphobia. Maybe the cigar and whisky tweet? But how to convince the arbiter that the Supreme Court is transphobic?......

How do you mean? It's been win after win these past few years. FWS was massive.

I don't think we could have got here any quicker, because of the tedious slowness of litigation. There'll be more, too 😟

She could be using her platform for good, instead she uses it to target marginalised and vulnerable groups and attack them repeatedly. Not just transgender people, cis-women who appear too "manly", asexuals and anyone who doesn't agree with her stance.

There's also a lot of racist stereotypes in the Harry Potter books, and they're not at all well-written. All the ideas are stolen and they are full of plot holes. There are no openly gay characters but she's tried to curry favour with the gay community by randomly going back and naming characters as gay, despite no evidence of them being gay when she wrote it. It all comes across as calculated and fake.

If you don't believe that trans people are really the gender they say they are, you're probably able to overlook all that.

The irony of posing as a man in order to write books about how people shouldn't present as the opposite gender will never stop being ridiculous.

I won't be arguing further about it on this thread or anywhere else- you asked and I answered.

OMG children's books written in the 90s include no gay characters, shock horror! Can you name any that were and do?

The £1m you referred to was if anyone could evidence any transphobia. That’s what I was referring to, after you referred to it first. You wanted ‘signed up’.

Also ‘giving opinions’ is pretty integral to discussions forms, which you are on. Giving opinions are usually followed up by a how and why, leading to… discussion.

IMO it this is the problem of contemporary fiction - authors are required to include a broad spectrum of representative characters and then those characters who possess characteristics the author doesn't identify with must be give a careful vetting by third party 'sensitivity' readers pre-publication, resulting in stereotyped caricatures of political correctness. This has become so blatant that it's put me off modern fiction and has made serious fiction truly unbearable. I really don't understand how modern readers can stand being pandered to in such an obnoxious way. In my youth I despaired of trying to keep up with contemporary fiction while also getting through the gigantic mountain of great literature that I wanted to read. It seemed one only got more and more behind. Little did I suspect that in my adulthood I would have such a luxury of time to get through that backlog.
