M&S have responded to people's enquiries, here's one:

As expected the staff member was just doing their job, something that happens thousands of times a day in shops all over the country.

As per normal, the trans panic was manufactured.

I fully expect all the GCs and media pundits who were pushing all sorts of hate to apologise, but as a person on their second LGBTQ moral panic I know very well how it goes.

I was on the Health and Safety committee at work for a few years. We ran manual handling courses, followed the regs on protective clothes, hats, gloves and shoes for specific jobs, and tried to make sure desk-based people had good lighting and suitable chairs.

But never ever mentioned bras.

Back in my day getting fitted wasn't a thing. Even 20 years ago the idea of having bras fitted was still a novelty - and the results people report are very variable, with the lovely ladies who take one look and produce the perfect bra balanced by the obsessive - 'oh you need a smaller back and a bigger cup' merchants whose offerings get binned as soon as their victims get home.

Edited

I'm surprised you say that. I'm pretty sure I got bra fittings as a teenager 40 years ago, and certainly 25 years ago when I was changing size during pregnancy, breastfeeding and afterwards.

Bras are supposed to be professionally fitted, especially when you get your first bra and your breast size changes in puberty. This is common knowledge.

So say the “professional bra fitters”.

It’s a bit like the old “you should spend a month’s salary on an engagement ring” says the diamond marketing board.

I have never had a bra fitting and my bras have not risen up and strangled me or otherwise caused me harm. They fit fine. It’s not that difficult to understand, there’s chest size and cup size. You could just try a load and find which is best. Or if you prefer it, get a fitting, but they don’t have to be professionally fitted.

It’s not like a gas boiler.

It really worries me that there are actually women that never realised you are supposed to have your bra professionally fitted, by the professionals, for health and safety reasons. Didn't their mother explain this to them?

These are all bra sellers or people whose job is to sell fashion.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/08/2025 21:21

I would tend to assume that whether you need to have your bra fitted or not would depend a lot on whether you take a cup AA or a cup H. Speaking personally I care rather more about the width of the shoulder strap than about the diddy little ornamental bow between my tits, for instance....

nutmeg7 · 15/08/2025 21:22

DeanElderberry · 15/08/2025 20:19

You know that's total bollocks, don't you? Good for drumming up customers and making money for the fitters, but not actually a necessity. We didn't all die of Wrong Bra Sizes in the decades before they were a thing.

Who knows? Perhaps we are all slowly being destroyed by our evil wrongly sized bras as we speak…

It’s really not compulsory. My bras fit really well and I’ve never had a fitting. I can use a tape measure.

Exactly. What happened to all the bra burners in the 70s? How did they survive?

Well that’s me, though I never actually burned one. I just didn’t bother from about 1970 to 1980 - I started wearing a bra to hold the pads when my milk leaked while breastfeeding, and got into the habit afterwards.
Now I’m in my 70s, I mostly don’t bother around the house, especially if it’s hot. My boobs are actually still quite nice.

illinivich · 15/08/2025 21:47

I was trained to fit cycle helmets. As a result, im not convinced bra fitting training is anything more than using a tape measure and knowing the stock.

With respect I've been fitted 'professionally' before.

It's the biggest crock of shit con ever with several giving me a size that was utterly bollocks just because their range didn't do my size and they just wanted to flog shit to me. (I have a back size of 30).

So I simply don't believe this nonsense. It's often little more than a marketing tool in my experience.

drspouse · 15/08/2025 21:52

If you are a more well endowed woman, and have your bras fitted by an actual woman at Bravissimo, you will know a) when it's properly fitted it's way more comfortable than you believe it could be if you don't get it fitted and b) they don't use a tape measure because they don't help.

thirdfiddle · 15/08/2025 22:13

Somehow I have the feeling that if menswear departments did bras they might have something I'd be keen to wear viz practical, cotton and with no itchy scratchy lace. Horrible garments.

Datun · 16/08/2025 09:22

Not sure how useful bra fittings are, anyway, given you can be a different size for different makes. Even from the same shop.

CarpeVitam · 16/08/2025 14:16

Laughing at the idea of professional bra fitting being essential due to it being a Health & Safety issue! 😉

Well i can see issues with metal components in some medical fields
And say needing assessment if stab vest or bullet proof vests are deployed or physical combat generally.

And as the NHS will provide breast reduction surgery on medical grounds so in theory a professionally fitted bra could be a OH solution to a work problem (same as Glasses).

I agree that sometimes it down to how good a fitter is and how well they know their stock.

And as there is an ill fitting bra can act as a binder so there is element of it being a H&S issue.

This. last time I was measured I was told that it was just a starting point and that your actual breast shape may change the fit depending on bra style (as well as manufacturing differences)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/08/2025 18:05

sadmillenial
there is literally NO research about bras, the need for bras, the issues with ill fitting bras, etc

Of course there isn't. They are a women's problem, like so many other things men know nothing about because they don't need to, such as seat-belts that rub your neck raw because they were designed for people over five foot eight.

borntobequiet · 16/08/2025 18:06

My breasts changed both shape and
size with my monthly cycle. So I had different bras for different stages.

I would expect clamps on your nipples would also affect sizing
