M&S have responded to people's enquiries, here's one:

https://bsky.app/profile/dpdormouse.bsky.social/post/3lvuzitrplc2f

As expected the staff member was just doing their job, something that happens thousands of times a day in shops all over the country.

As per normal, the trans panic was manufactured.

I fully expect all the GCs and media pundits who were pushing all sorts of hate to apologise, but as a person on their second LGBTQ moral panic I know very well how it goes.

Why did you do that, @CarpeVitam ?

Brainworm · 11/08/2025 22:10

M&S probably should have treated the request for the CCTV footage when it was requested. I say probably, because they may consider 14 years old is sufficient for the child to determine for themselves what to do with their data.

Either way, they should have provided a written explanation as why they won’t provide it. I expect the ICO will require then to do so if the child themselves makes the request. They may choose to pixelate the accused assistant, it is likely that all hell would be unleashed on him if footage was shared on SM. As much as I think his behaviour is unacceptable, I don’t think his identity should be made public.

I was just checking in to see if OP had actually provided this statement from M&S correcting the ‘misinformation’ but find that he hasn’t been back at all. What a surprise.

He's too busy posting about "genital ID cards" on Bluesky instead.

Probably to mark the thread to report to the good denizens of Reddit, I suppose.

It's like they haven't heard of a function called Watch thread. There is no need at all to 'placemark'. That is why clicking on the function Watch thread exists at the top of every thread.

ThatBlackCat meant why did you put a full stop and not post anything. A lot of these threads are posted on Reddit by angry people and it looked like you'd done that to have it in your 'I'm on' list to make it easy to do that without contributing. I fully apologise if that's not the case.

Why do it? 🤷‍♀️ It's bad netiquette and against Mumsnet rules, it pisses posters off.

No, accosted cannot mean just any old approach. It's very definition hinges on aggression or threat.

Incorrect; it can mean to approach boldly, confidently, as in street sellers and religious people trying to recruit.

M&S have a legal obligation to pixelate anybody who is not the Data Subject so M&S would be obliged to remove his images from the data.
And a duty as a employer to do that too.

The Mum has a right to her data too so depending on the angles of cameras she gets her data with no daughter or no shop assistants or no customers identifable

Daughter gets her data with no Mum or no shop assistants or no customers IDable

Dilemma for M&S would not egaging with unknown men in the underwear be proof of the daughters competency?

From ICO
When may a child exercise these rights on their own behalf?
A child may exercise the above rights on their own behalf as long as they are competent to do so. In Scotland, a person aged 12 or over is presumed to be of sufficient age and maturity to be able to exercise their data protection rights, unless the contrary is shown. This presumption does not apply in England and Wales or in Northern Ireland, where competence is assessed depending upon the level of understanding of the child, but it does indicate an approach that will be reasonable in many cases. A child should not be considered to be competent if it is evident that he or she is acting against their own best interests.
If you have already decided that a child is competent to provide their own consent then it will usually be reasonable to assume they are also competent to exercise their own data protection rights.
If a child is competent then, just like an adult, they may authorise someone else to act on their behalf. This could be a parent, another adult, or a representative such as a child advocacy service, charity or solicitor.

So that would be an id card that states your biological sex and cant change your sex marker on. If so that's an idea I could get behind and I'm sure everyone else would aswell

It's amazing how they seem to gravitate there, like there's a massive TIM magnet hidden amongst the lingerie.

Remember Father Ted and Father Dougal getting lost in Ireland’s biggest lingerie section, and bumping into other priests in there?

‘We have eight priests hanging around in the lingerie section, if it was one or two of us that would be embarrassing, but eight, we’re talking national scandal’.

What is it with the hysterical and repeated use of the words “lie” and “lies”? No room for a misunderstanding, different interpretation, picking up incorrect info from others. The braying of “LIE” seems like a technique to make it harder to challenge, compromise or rethink. I suspect its repeated use is also to make sure there are plenty of examples of something being branded a “LIE” so it’s on record. Bloody tedious

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/08/2025 12:56

I think that is part of the effort to make accusations, denying of which looks defensive and therefore probably false, while responses of any kind disputing the lies can then be called lies themselves. It's one of the oldest techniques in the world, and is employed by kids in primary school to stop real accusations against them from getting a hearing.
