M&S have responded to people's enquiries, here's one:

https://bsky.app/profile/dpdormouse.bsky.social/post/3lvuzitrplc2f

As expected the staff member was just doing their job, something that happens thousands of times a day in shops all over the country.

As per normal, the trans panic was manufactured.

I fully expect all the GCs and media pundits who were pushing all sorts of hate to apologise, but as a person on their second LGBTQ moral panic I know very well how it goes.

The trans (TiM) employee approached a young girl (14) in the lingerie department to offer his help with buying a bra. Totally normal. Nothing to see here. I'm always being approached/accosted by staff in M&S offering to help me with underwear purchases. Totally normal. I never have to traipse around trying to find someone to answer a Q. Oh and that completely explains why M&S apologised. Nothing to see here.

This, exactly.

I cast a very beady eye on people who openly say we should reduce or eliminate safeguarding for certain categories of men.

Yes. As has been pointed out in various ways, people who defend this ideology to the point of decimating safeguarding, are motivated by such extreme self interest, that it makes them blind, not only to normal principles, but to how they come across to everyone else.

YY.

heathspeedwell · 11/08/2025 08:57

Does anyone who is on Twitter know if M&S have agreed to give the girl's mum the CCTV footage?

I suspect it will clearly show that the trans identified man had at least two different customers he could approach, (the girl or her mum who was looking at other things) but he chose to approach the little girl who was looking at bras.

And before anyone moans about me calling a 14 year old girl 'little', the average height of a 14 year old girl is around 5 foot 2. The trans identified man was 6 foot 2 so he was obviously towering over her.

5ft 2!! looks at 13yo next to me and wonders what went wrong.

Actually in this case being on the smaller side wouldn't surprise me as size is one of the triggers for puberty. Which is why we went through all of the first bra issues a couple of years ago.

I was just checking in to see if OP had actually provided this statement from M&S correcting the ‘misinformation’ but find that he hasn’t been back at all. What a surprise.

She has asked for it twice and they refused, she says today she’s putting in a DSAR to try and get it. She’s posted part of an email she sent to them.

Is it true that the member of staff was supposed to be working in Homeware? That's a very different department - somehow I'd assumed that if not assigned to lingerie the person had come over from women's clothing. Homeware seems an unlikely cross-cover arrangement.

There was no cross cover arrangement,

He wasn't supposed to be there. Homeware is on another floor entirely it seems.

The heroine that is Baroness Emma Nicholson has now written to M&S:

I do love a letter from the Baroness.

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 11/08/2025 12:14

... you must retain Jaguar levels of confidence of your commercial invincibility.

Baroness Emma Nicholson has a great turn of phrase

SabrinaThwaite · 11/08/2025 12:26

Her letter is a corker.

I love a good Baroness letter.

Archie Norman must feel like he's just been given his homework.

murasaki · 11/08/2025 12:32

I liked the way she started with Mr Norman and immediately dropped to Archie, like she was scolding a naughty little boy.

Bonden · 11/08/2025 12:32

that letter provides thrilling pleasure in every line. Well done Baroness, and thank you.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/08/2025 12:36

Oh FFS. So he literally was just passing by (or lurking) and thought he'd ask a teenage girl about her underwear?

That's what it looks like. It seems M&S have a bit of a track record of putting TIMs in the lingerie dept, but it escalates further if TIMs they employ in other areas just gravitate towards the lingerie dept on their own initiative and think (being very charitable about this) that they'll have a nice girly conversation about bras with that embarrassed looking teenage girl they've spotted.

murasaki · 11/08/2025 13:55

It's amazing how they seem to gravitate there, like there's a massive TIM magnet hidden amongst the lingerie.

I can imagine how this goes.

Shift manager: Ok Tiffany, you're on the bread aisle today. We might want you on the cheese counter later.

Tiffany: Must... go... to... bra department... there might be... teen girl who needs advice

Damn the lack of the laugh emoticon.

murasaki · 11/08/2025 14:09

I'm seeing the zombie walk in Sean of the Dead towards the bras.

Helleofabore · 11/08/2025 18:58

”you must retain Jaguar levels of confidence of your commercial invincibility.”

Baroness N strikes again with a turn of phrase that should be preserved as a classic for all time.
