NHS Fife tries to silence nurse - Sandie Peggie vs NHS Fife Health Board and Dr Beth Upton - thread #43

nauticant · 25/07/2025 15:21

Sandie Peggie, a nurse at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy (VH), has brought claims in the employment tribunal against her employer; Fife Health Board (the Board) and another employee, Dr B Upton. Ms Peggie’s claims are of sexual harassment, harassment related to a protected belief, indirect discrimination and victimisation. Dr Upton claims to be a transwoman, that is observed as male at birth but asserting a female gender identity.

The Employment Tribunal hearing started on Monday 3 February 2025 and was expected to last 2 weeks. However, after 2 weeks it was not complete and it adjourned part-heard. It resumed on 16 July and the last day of evidence had been intended to be 28 July with 2 days of submissions from counsel meaning that the hearing was to have ended on 30 July. However, it became apparent as the hearing progressed that this schedule wouldn't be followed.

The hearing commenced with Sandie Peggie giving evidence. Dr Beth Upton gave evidence from Thursday 6 February to Wednesday 12 February.

Access to view the hearing remotely was obtainable by sending an email request to [email protected] by 5pm on Wednesday 9 July. Detailed instructions were provided here:

Massive Pratchet fan here as well. DH (then DBoyfriend) introduced me to him at 19, at Uni. Was lucky enough to hear Pratchett speak in the Oxford Union, when Thud was released (got a signed copy).

Have his complete works on my bookcase. Except the Shepherds Crown. Still can't bear to live in a world with no more new Pratchett books left.

Love making jam, chutneys, all things Tolkein. Knitting too, and science. Medieval history and castles. And steam traction engines.

Tolkein? Tolkein? We have a misspelling!

(... and an exclamation mark, which is so unprofessional of me as an expert witness on the spelling of Tolkien ...)

Does anybody have ideas for raspberries? I eat some (lots) everyday on my yoghurt but we're having a glut this year and there are already two large bags in the freezer for winter. dd who can eat her own bodyweight in fruit is sadly out of the country at the moment. I suppose I could make jam.

Raspberry coulis. Delicious to pour over desserts, ice cream and meringues

ArealAdultHumanFemale · 26/07/2025 21:55

Raspberry Vodka. Like Sloe Gin, but Raspberry and Vodka

ErrolTheDragon · 26/07/2025 21:59

I’ve never made jam but if I did raspberry would be high on my list. I did once make some very nice lemon curd though.
I’m on a slow Pratchett re-read, just finished Carpe Jugulum but thought I’d revisit Nation next.

Gassylady · 26/07/2025 22:07

Long time lurker and poster under another name. Love Pratchett, love baking, sew badly, crochet even more badly but getting better. Last weekend went to see the Crossness pumping station -amazing!

Raspberry gin is gorgeous. Like sloe gin but use less sugar. And after decanting the liqueur you can use the gin infused rasberries over ice-cream for a very intoxicating pudding.

Igneococcus · 26/07/2025 22:11

Crumble and coulis are good calls. I could probably freeze some coulis in portions to use later.
I made some Creme de Mur with brambles last year, very nice, I wonder if that would work with raspberries as well.

myplace · 26/07/2025 22:11

Sandie handled that messenger chat from Lindsay so well. I’d have been spitting feathers! And she spelled her name wrongly, despite it being there to copy!

PonyPatter44 · 26/07/2025 22:13

I never realised we had so many Pratchett fans here! I think he appeals to us because he us wise and compassionate, and sees things as they truly are. Also Sam Vimes is one of the greatest policemen in fiction, and Death is...Death.

The best sort of pudding Smile
I might also make some raspberry vinegar but that doesn't need that may raspberries.
Looking at my blueberry bushes, I'll be asking for ideas for blueberries soon as well.

Ah, I read Just One Damned Thing After Another last year (randomly picked up as part of a multi buy offer) and meant to carry on with the series! Thanks for the reminder!

As well as all the Pratchett titles, we also have every Heyer novel and they are all well-used. I've never heard of Jodi Taylor, but the one you mention is now on my Kindle to try.

Also check out Dana Stabenow's series featuring...

Kate Shugak!

And her Eye of Isis series, and the Silk and Song trilogy.

@BeLemonNow I've been making jam for years - I'd recommend River Cottage's preserves book, or Pam the Jam's Book of Preserves as a good place to start but - just as importantly - talk through the theory/process of jam-making in a way that's easy to understand.

Essentially you need the right amount of pectin but also acid (usually lemon juice) unless the fruit is naturally acidic - the books have details for all the different types of fruit. That's what makes the 'gel' that is a set jam. Start with a high pectin fruit as it's easier (NEVER start with strawberry, it's an absolute fucker to get it to set) and you need almost equal amounts of sugar plus lemon juice (always freshly squeezed, not the bottled stuff).

If you need extra pectin, you can buy jam sugar with additional pectin in it. Or you can buy powder (dissolve in a bit of water first, otherwise it just sets into a lump in your jam - learn from my mistake!) or liquid versions. I prefer the jam sugar.

The best way to test for a set is by putting a plate in the freezer so it's cold, then when you think the jam is at setting point, spoon a bit onto the plate, leave it for a minute, then push it with your finger. If it wrinkles, it's set. If not, cook your jam for a bit longer, and repeat. It will almost ALWAYS take longer than the recipe says!

Home made jam tastes waaaay better than shop bought stuff so it's worth persevering :)

I swear my River Cottage Preserves Book is tattered, falling to bits and basically held together with jam I use it so often. Favourites are the sweet pickled cucumber, tomato passata to tomato ketchup recipe, the souper mix and any of the jam recipes.

Agree about strawberry jam - until you're really familiar with jam set, it's a pain in the arse (as well as having to scape off the scum - I never found the butter trick helpfu). I have often been convinced that it is set only to be able to pour it onto my toast. Raspberry or blackcurrant are suitable jams for beginners.

Some details from the bundle from the Times:

<a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/20250726205540/www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/behind-sandie-peggie-nhs-fife-tribunal-emails-nhvtzvqkw" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://archive.is/20250726205540/www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/behind-sandie-peggie-nhs-fife-tribunal-emails-nhvtzvqkw

Last para is my favourite:

A spokeswoman for NHS Fife said: “Throughout the course of the employment tribunal, NHS Fife has been clear that it will not comment on individuals or evidence while legal proceedings are ongoing. We remain respectful of the legal process and the role of the tribunal in considering all evidence presented.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

ETA: Ah bugger, what's up with the link? Have tried to give an alternative. Sorry.

Apologies if this has been linked already, but this article really does it's best to present Upton in a good light. Trans tribunal phone notes were not checked in person - BBC News https://share.google/TyUl0rVIcstIvciHe

ForAllWomen · 26/07/2025 22:26

Just spent two hours watching Michael Foran commenting on the IT evidence. God to be there in person.

It’s compelling context - shows how impactful this evidence. And also shows - that if we believe the evidence - there is no technical reason for the dates changing - the only other option is human editing.

To go to those lengths to lie to a Tribunal halfway through it - on something that was voluntary - he didn’t have to give up the phone at all.

Going to these voluntary lengths to present false evidence to the tribunal could be viewed as sociopathic…..

People with the condition might seem charming and charismatic at first, at least on the surface, but they generally find it difficult to understand other people’s feelings. They often:
break rules or laws
behave aggressively or impulsively
feel little guilt for harm they cause others
use manipulation, deceit, and controlling behavior

Anyhow - I have some share tokens to access Forans substack and his previous post court updates so do DM me if you’d like to spend hours getting more immersed in the case. Promise to delete all data after and keep it in strictest confidence.

I make chocolate fudge, frogs & bamboo grow in my garden, plus some herbs (not Beetle's favourite), never read Pratchett but do read Neal Stephenson.
