NHS Policy Audit - working party -Thread #3

Original thread #1 here:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5291237-nhs-policy-audit-working-party?page=1
Thread #2:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5322494-nhs-policy-audit-working-party-thread-2

This is a thread about “keeping the receipts” on NHS Policies prior to the Supreme Court ruling on 16th April 2025.

Our working theory is that there were no single sex spaces for NHS Staff or Patients in the entire country before that date, having all been removed by stealth.

We are aiming to prove this by auditing websites and policies for all the UK trusts and using the results to raise public awareness.

As well as recording what has happened historically, the information will form a baseline so we can check which Trusts comply or defy the judgement in due course...

We are working around the country region by region. If you fancy getting involved in a bit of grassroots feminism then please do join in to help!?

Each trust takes about an hour to research and you can upload online without giving any personal details away. Comment below and we can give you the link to an online survey - it changes for each region.

Thanks soooo much to all the vipers who have helped so far and @twoloons for doing a great job with the thread wrangling!

@KnottyAuty I am a subscriber to Nick Wallis’ Gender Blog. Nick has just finished his draft of his book about the Post Office and is now focusing on Gender Wars.

He is interested in the NHS and says “Also, if you have any current documentation pointing to capture in your organisation and/or examples of sanction (formal or social) for those who attempt to question the orthodoxy do pass it on. Everything will be dealt with in the utmost confidence.”

Absolutely. Nick would be ALL OVER this.

(I wish I could commit to helping but really not in a position to do so at present.)

I believe that Knotty has already been in touch with Nick Wallis so he is aware of our work.

I thought that might be the case. I assume he is now looking specifically for personal accounts of how the policies have negatively impacted staff and patients.

It’s clear “one” woman objecting is apparently deemed insufficient by ET judges. Darlington had power in numbers and the more specific examples of the negative impact on women across the UK by NHS policies will help. It shouldn’t as one woman or girl saying no should be respected.

Hi - thanks - for some reason missed this when you originally posted. Hopefully we will be able to issue the results of the audit in an interactive format on a website. So anyone can have a look 👀- watch this space!

SEENinHealth are doing such a great job with their tweets!
Loving their summaries - making it all much more digestible. I still feel a bit swamped with all the info we found LOL

SEENinHealth had the bright idea of using the well chosen hashtag #knottyaudit to pull it all together ie by searching on X

Good evening vipers!

Just a quick note to say that we have been collaborating with SEENinHealth who will be publishing the audit results in an easy access format on their website this week. Thanks to everyone who contributed - we couldn't have done it without everyone who helped!

Special shout outs to @SeaStoat for the original FOIs plus @TwoLoonsAndASprout @Cantunseeit @FarriersGirl @Mipe and@teawamutu who have been beavering away with endless reformatting and checking behind the scenes.

In the end we went for a sample selection of around 40 follow up FOIs which went in a few weeks ago and results coming in - no surprise that none of the Trusts have managed to update their policies!!

I shall post more tomorrow night - so please do get ready to link and share - thank you!

I did some of the early stuff, but have to reject the credit and confess that life got in the way massively recently, so the vast majority of the beavering was done by the remarkable bunch you mentioned.

🙌

Thanks and cheers and hugs and flowers also need to go to @KnottyAuty for wrangling this unwieldy project over the finish line. It has been mammoth, and she deserves all the praise for kicking it off and keeping it going.

It’s been over a year’s work by so many women, thank you @KnottyAuty for bringing us all together. I can’t wait to see the website! I could do a potted history of single sex accommodation in the NHS for it, if you want?

AlexandraLeaving · 15/04/2026 11:33

Well done and thank you to all of you who have put so much effort into this important work.

New NHS Women's Health Strategy - Wes Streeting statement about medical misogyny | Mumsnet

Knotty, just to say thank you and your "minions" (said with all due reverence!) for all your hard work on the audits. I have been following the process from the beginning. Nice to see the work coming to fruition!

I started a thread (link above, I hope) about the new Streeting NHS Women's Health Strategy, thought I would just highlight it in case it has any relevance to your work.

Haven't had time to read it yet, so don't know if there will be anything in it about single sex spaces. But, seeing as it's about women and healthcare and the NHS, there bloody should be!
