Dawson is making very little sense in this article, but the woman-hatred is very clear.

Maybe TipsyRaven is upset about the use of 'plastic' because they would rather the word 'cosmetic' were used?

https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/plastic-surgery/

'Plastic surgery is used to repair and reconstruct missing or damaged tissue and skin.

The main aim of plastic surgery is to restore the function and appearance of tissue and skin so it's as close to normal as possible.

Plastic surgery is different from cosmetic surgery, which is surgery carried out solely to change a person's appearance to achieve what they feel is a more desirable look.'

Okay, I hadn't appreciated there was a difference. I'm happy to call it cosmetic surgery, if that's more accurate?

Did he also write on Dr Who? Wasn't that apparently shite? I agree with@whatterysquash there's a lot of cowardice and box ticking in the industry. He's been given countless opportunities and had objective success due to (and tied into) his special identity - but the emperor has no talent. Safeguarding and poor editorial choices aside (which is deeply troubling). I do wonder what that does to a person? He must know why hes been given an unwarranted leg up because: culture. And I imagine that might cause a significant narcissistic injury.

Datun · 10/06/2025 11:15

Yes, like everyone else, I'm absolutely gobsmacked that publishers, shops and libraries, and bloody schools, go anywhere near this content. It's unbelievable.

A middle aged man who says he wants to get fucked like a woman, because it doesn't matter what hole it is, talks about teenage perky boobs and says homosexuality is second-best.

Fat better to be a bratz collecting, cocktail swilling, out of town commuter fucking, perky boobed girl?

The Bratz phenomenon had passed me by, so I googled it. A hyper sexualised version of young girls, half of them indistinguishable from drag queen aspiration.

You do have to wonder what went wrong with these men to make them hate everything so much, but also give them the massive sense of entitlement that they can use women over and over to try and mitigate it.

Do you think any of the books might open the eyes of my 16y old DD to the misogyny of a certain idea of gender? If so, which one would you "recommend"? I would definitely read it myself first to vet it.

CassOle · 10/06/2025 11:16

I suspect the Tipsy won't be happy with 'cosmetic' either, but technically it is the more accurate term IMO. You are starting with a healthy body after all. I like the phrase 'extreme body modification' as used by a poster earlier in the thread too. Maybe I will start to combine them: extreme cosmetic body modification surgery.

Edit. Sorry, this is a reply to Arabella.

The episode based on Eurovision IIRC.

I wouldn't let your daughter anywhere near them. The reviews may be, but not the book

Yes for anyone anyone not aware, the cherry is meant to symbolise a girls virginity/hymen.

There was a drag queen called popping cherry.

“I just want to live my life the way I always imagined it. I have become the version of myself I wanted to be when I was four. This is who I wanted to be. I wear what I want, and eat what I want. I have two dogs and spend my money on expensive cocktails and rare Bratz dolls from 2001”

All women are to this movement are a set of stereotypes.

I hate when people talk about when they were four. They had no real concept of who they were and didn't have a framework or the cognitive understanding to grasp gender, sex, social roles, social rules, and how they all interact. "I knew when I was four" is such absolutely bullshit. Fuck all the way off.

Cabbageheads · 10/06/2025 11:22

I'm someone else with a job connected to publishing, and I don't understand the love for Dawson either, or who is buying his books. I'm confident that it's not teen girls. I do know that it's the waterstones market as opposed to the supermarkets.

Quite often so called 'teen' books aren't teen at all, heartstopper being a case in point (a big market was women in their early thirties who like gay romance).

WhatterySquash · 10/06/2025 11:25

I don't know if I'd introduce his books to a teen just to try to get them to see how misogynistic it all is - not only might that be unclear to them but also I 'd hesitate to be the one to inflict the grossness and inaccuracy on anyone. The main books I'm thinking of are Wonderland and What's the T?

Agree. I knew when I was four I wanted to be a boy. In retrospect, I hated "girl" stuff and liked "boy" stuff. They are arbitrary cultural categories that had nothing to do with my actual sex, just stereotypes and expectations. JD is still (according to JD's own statements) clinging to girlhood rather than the horror of being a feminine gay man as a "consolation prize" - a sign of being unable to separate stereotypes from sex.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/06/2025 11:32

Wanging on about cocktails and being fabulous and collecting Bratz dolls does make him sound like a stereotyped feminine gay man more than a woman.

To be honest, More, i'm not convinced it's even a good idea to alert her to their existence.

Totally. Funny that.

Helleofabore · 10/06/2025 11:35

Those Bratz dolls remind me that Teen Vogue has a huge adult male market. Which is why it is a bin fire of a publication for teenaged girls.

It is why there are so many fucked up articles and 'how to' guides in Teen Vogue.

CassOle · 10/06/2025 11:35

What did Smithers collect in the Simpsons? Oh yes, Malibu Stacy dolls. And everyone back then knew what the joke was.

WhatterySquash · 10/06/2025 11:37

(But even having said all this, and finding JD and JD's works misogynist, homophobic and inaccurate... I still feel bad for JD having genital surgery. Harmful, experimental procedure with very high rate of serious complications and horrible side effects. I know it's the individual's choice etc. but it's not SRS, it's not a "new vagina" (and if anyone did say that they should be sued IMO), it does not change your sex and it's just another dead end on a non-existent road to "being a woman". I think people like JD could have been happier as a healthy and self-accepting gay man if not for social pressures and stereotypes.)

Wasn't it the guy from pink news who went on about great articles in teen Vogue? All about anal sex?

I might be misremembering who (but it was definitely a guy).

Catabogus · 10/06/2025 11:37

Probably not what Juno Dawson is aiming at, but “Maggots” is very much giving me Miss Trunchbull vibes.

Apropos of that, I’ve recently been to see the musical of Matilda with DC and I thought the actor playing Miss Trunchbull did an excellent job of playing the revolting headmistress, in a khaki dress, while simultaneously convincing nobody that he was actually in any way a woman.

Yes, I can't remember the article I read now, but Juno was very careful to claim his boyfriend was straight.

I sometimes forget, in understanding the number that's been done on lesbians, the same number has been done on gay boys

Hot on the heels of an absolute idiot calling women germs, now someone is calling women maggots. Woman hating is inherent in this movement and there's no excuse for anyone not seeing it.
