This behaviour is the textbook method of the typical agent provocateur. These people tank their own careers, usually as a result of shooting their mouths off about some form of controversial issue. Following this, the only way in which they can stay in the news is by posting increasingly egregious content online, or by instigating media spats with other people. The latter move instantly gets everyone talking and in many cases is the only thing still keeping that person relevant.

It's exactly the same pattern of behaviour. I also doubt whether these people even believe half the shite they spout. It's part of a cultivated persona - which is why they are so committed to it.
