The Bluestocking Women's Pub, where brains can exist in a single state

Welcome all. The booze here is minimally intoxicating, the food is calorie free and the staff are warm and cuddly. And if the thread title sounds nonsensical, blame the guy Myrtle was listening to this evening!

Have to do a rethink now, less airborne, equally terrifying to the edible.

That's a fabulous-looking wol!

DeanElderberry · 16/05/2025 17:00

Isn't she, and she came from the website of WestmeathWhiskeyWorld, so she'd fit in well at the Bluestocking (apart from the eating small rodents thing, which might be problematic).

MarieDeGournay · 16/05/2025 17:40

I suppose Woley could be a rare example of the Lesser-Spotted Wolf-Owl, also known as the Flying Wol-Wol?
Lesser spotted, except dahn the Stockin' where she's spotted often, innit?😄

And the great thing about having a Flying Wol-Wol is that they are vegetarian, so the gerbils can relax, and she will fly around removing offending bits of 'healthy' greenery from Boily's plateGrin

So we won't have to put up a sign saying
PLEASE DO NO EAT THE STAFF. THEY ARE DOING THEIR BEST.

This being the Bluestocking, you will know where that comes fromSmile

lcakethereforeIam · 16/05/2025 17:42

A short-eared wol. Imagine looking like that and you're called after something you have in respect of a completely different species that aren't even ears!

FlowerUser · 16/05/2025 18:05

Fifth rejection of five with no interview. Everyone saying the right job will be along for you. I know.

But I should still be in my last job, then this wouldn’t matter hurt so much.

Brilliant job came up locally (like 10 mins walk away) but I’m missing a compulsory criterion.

Plumber visited. Shower is leaking due to sealant being 30 years old. Relatively easy fix for now but we have to wait for it to dry out.

So sorry to hear about that, Flower, and I'll leave it at that without going on to be all positive and Pollyanna-ish about 'the right job' - you're entitled to feel nothing but really really upset to the nth degree right now, the resilience you've always shown will kick in when it's the right time.
Flowers and🍷until then.

lcakethereforeIam · 16/05/2025 18:17

I'm surprised it's not called the translong-eared wol.

My youngest rang yesterday. She'd just take one of the year end exams and she seemed deflated. She'd run out of time and...it was hard to get her to talk because that's how she is and, I think, she was worried she might cry.

I feel the same way about her as about @FlowerUser. Helpless and angry. You are good people and deserve good things. This, one day, for better or worse, will be in the rear view mirror. It will pass. But it hurts in the now.

Obviously I don't know wtf I'm talking about but apply for the job anyway, if you still can? It'll likely be a futile effort but not a waste. You may still be the best candidate. They'll never be a perfect one.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/05/2025 18:23

I’m sorry Myrtle/Flower, thats a real shame.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/05/2025 18:25

Sorry to hear your DD is upset, Cake. She may have done better than she thinks despite running out of time. What sort of subject and which year?

FlowerUser · 16/05/2025 18:39

Obviously I don't know wtf I'm talking about but apply for the job anyway, if you still can?

It’s a protected characteristic that I don’t have. And absolutely I respect that because the organisation is for those with that protected characteristic. The job itself wouldn’t necessarily need someone with the characteristic, but they very much want someone like that and they are allowed to protect it.

lcakethereforeIam · 16/05/2025 18:40

Thank you. Biochemistry, 1st year. I've no idea how they're weighted. It's just one of a bunch of end of year stuff. She's been volunteering, clearing a community garden and they're having a picnic this weekend as a thank you. Which i hope will cheer her up. I think it was a bit fresh. She's back home at the end of the month.

I think us telling her not to worry is unhelpful in the moment. It's hard to think what else to say though. Sometimes you just need a hug and screens are no good for that. Her sister watched some WWE(!) with her which will have taken her mind off things.

Apologies. I misunderstood. I thought it was familiarity with something or training that could have been picked up in post if you aced everything else.

Oh bugger, I'm sorry. Maybe have a wallow tonight and then return to the fray revitalised tomorrow? I'm sure the bar gerbil can rustle up a small swimming pool of something alcoholic in which to drown your sorrows.

Good news about the shower though, so at least there's something positive.

I see Flower is already at the taster pool session the gerbils are currently trialling.

Perhaps nobody with that protected characteristic will apply, though?

This is awesome!

Bluestocking booze is brilliant, especially as we’re on a dry run until the Bank Holiday, in preparation for our now-sorted-out holiday from 1 June.

It’s a bit like saying a women’s organisation where no woman would apply. 😂

I know what the official Bluestocking motto is, but perhaps we need an alternative one for weeks like this:

I shall be at the large and famous garden show I mentioned next week. Surrounded by plane trees, so I'll be living on a steady diet of antihistamines.

I’ve been playing with ChatGPT, and have found it will turn photos into studio Ghibli style pictures, so I’ve transformed one of my wedding pictures - me, dh and my parents. Dh thinks it is spooky.
