Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
sandgreen · 20/03/2025 08:02

This has been on the BBC R3 news bulletins this morning as well!

starpatch · 20/03/2025 08:03

7.45am this morning on today programme was interesting about degradation of statistics due to gender being recorded rather than set

BlackeyedSusan · 20/03/2025 08:07

We fucking told you that....

But, oh no, we were being "transphobic."

RegimentalSturgeon · 20/03/2025 08:21

Meh. Frankly, I struggle to care about this one and write it down as just another dimension of self harm.

Binglebong · 20/03/2025 08:23

I heard this on the beeb a few minutes ago. Can't find anything on the website.

They also said that crimes were being missed...

mrshoho · 20/03/2025 08:27

We all said it! Quelle suprise! Look what happens when we ignore science and make decisions based on feelings. What absolute idiots who are responsible for this.

RethinkingLife · 20/03/2025 08:30

We warned about this using keywords that introduced visual jitter into the words so nobody real could read them.

Like our squeaky voices are beyond the level of hearing.

Same phenomenon, it must be.

HermioneWeasley · 20/03/2025 08:41

Oh look, it’s another entirely predictable consequence that women have warned about for years and nobody listened

BettyEagleton · 20/03/2025 08:44

I was very pleased to hear the BBC say VERY clearly that while people can change their gender presentation it is impossible to change their biological sex.

MassiveWordSalad · 20/03/2025 08:49

This is fucking infuriating. How have health professionals, whose business is biology, allowed this to happen? People on this board who have been vocal for years aren’t interested in biological reality or safeguarding, oh no, we’re just transphobic. I think my eyes may roll so hard they will be looking at the inside of my head permanently.

Mind, look at MN’s census and the absurd abuse of intersex.

It’s as if they’ve learned nothing from hosting FWR discussions.

I have not looked at MN’s census. Is it likely to raise my blood pressure?

Yeah, I think it will

This is mn reasoning:🤔🤨

BeckyAMumsnet · 17/03/2025 16:24

Hi all and thanks for your input. We always aim to take users’ views into account when designing our surveys. Previously, we've made changes to wording based on your feedback, and we carefully consider these issues each time. In this instance, we have chosen to include "intersex" as an option because there is a very small minority of people who are biologically difficult to categorise. While we understand that intersex is not a third sex, we felt it was important not to exclude that category when gathering relevant data. We appreciate that not everyone will agree with this approach of course, but we believe this wording is the best way to ensure all users feel able to respond accurately.

Question.

Are you
male
female
intersex
prefer not to say.

Watch your BP.

I’d be interested to know, given that 0.018% of the population has a DSD, how many of those people are making their feelings known to Mumsnet about how to word their census 🧐

Perhaps worth noting that people who were formerly termed "intersex" tend now to prefer the phrase "difference of sexual development". Though of course even those with DSDs are either male or female.

Oh I know. Which makes MN stance all the weirder. I particularly raised my eyebrow to: 'While we understand that intersex is not a third sex, we felt it important not to exclude that category'. I mean, eh?

Transmen who still have a cervix, still need smears (and most do attend). The solution, is to fix the recall system, so they are still recalled - not to pretend they don't exist/ misgender them.

Recording their biological sex and making sure they get the care they need for their female bodies is the opposite of pretending they don’t exist.

Who exactly is doing the pretending? Pretending people can change their biological sex is why we're in this mess.

Of course, this is the 'rationale' for 'people with a cervix' - so transmen will know it involves them even they are not no no no definitely positively not one of those 'women' people so if they are told that women need to have regular smear tests, there's no reason to believe that they would think it applies to them., hence 'people with a cervix.'

You see why I put 'rationale' in inverted commas, right?🙄

Or it's there to stop them being turned away from screening when they present to make an appointment? I'm sure trans men are perfectly aware they have a cervix, but some HCPs may incorrectly deny them screening hence the guidelines say women and people with a cervix are eligible.

Why would a HCP deny screening for a female?
