Mumsnet IS mainly transphobic though. It is not a site I would advise anyone with trans related issues to turn to.

Neither would I - it's Mumsnet - it's not aimed at trans issues. Wrong demographic. It is allowed to not centre trans you know!

But it is.

Would a trans person be welcome here?

Edited

Well, yes, because no one would know! Unless they specifically mentioned it. And why would they given they just want to blend in. Oh. Wait.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 08/02/2025 17:45

Well if a trans person shared they were trans how would they be treated?

Probably be asked questions and responded to by reading what they write and typing words onto the screen.

Like everyone.

If memory serves, a TW did an AMA a while back. They couldn't answer any of the questions iirc

Maybe to share their own view points?

Maybe to even share that they agree with a lot of what’s posted?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 08/02/2025 17:51

A trans person posting about how to deal with their neighbour constantly parking over their drive - how would we even know unless they mentioned it & even then it wouldnt be relevant

but certainly in FWR when ppl who tell us they are trans post it’s almost always to tell us we’re wrong and they really are a woman and then being unable to say how they are a woman except by living out female stereotypes. Unsurprisingly women who’ve spent their lives trying to get out of being stereotyped because of their sex are not sympathetic to men who think having long hair & wearing a dress makes them exactly the same as actual women

ArabellaScott · 08/02/2025 17:51

Why on earth would anyone assume that trans people don't post here?

MarieDeGournay · 08/02/2025 17:54

Further to my puzzlement at what horrors the Belfast Health and Social Care trust had perpetrated on the trans community to be included in the list, I googled them and now I know the awful things they do, namely:

I hope they are hanging their heads in shame, the transphobic bigots..

Totallymessed · 08/02/2025 17:56

It's virtually impossible not to be accused of transphobia. A couple of weeks ago there was a thread on r/transgenderuk that amused me, when Stonewall were denounced as transphobic for saying something or other that displeased them. The Guardian is regularly denounced on there for being horribly transphobic, sadly for Kath Viner after the years of effort she's put into being as trans positive as humanly possible.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 08/02/2025 17:45

Well if a trans person shared they were trans how would they be treated?

Depends on the thread surely? If it was "As a trans woman these are my pearls of wisdom on childbirth/ endometriosis/ menopause" then I expect they'd rightly get the same short shift as anyone else who chipped in with opinions on something they have no experience of.

Mumsnet isn’t transphobic as such, but it’s predominantly women, and most women don’t want to see a man in a female toilet. So there’s likely to be a negative vibe towards men invading women’s spaces.

Absolutely they'd be welcome. They can come and tell us what year biology, science and fact changed.

Msmoonpie · 08/02/2025 18:01

Those who claim Mumsnet and posters to be transphobic never seem to be able to substantiate it.

Other than “You’re mean to want a female only space”

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/02/2025 18:02

Spot on. I remember Caitlin Jenner saying something along the lines of the hardest part of being a woman is deciding what outfit to wear each day. 🙄 I read that and was like yay, well done you. You're one of us and you really get it!

arethereanyleftatall · 08/02/2025 18:05

What does transphobic mean @Scutterbug @Princessconsuelabananahammock9 ?

CerealPosterHere · 08/02/2025 18:05

Oh well. 😁

How sad. Nevermind 😂.

BiggerBoat1 · 08/02/2025 18:07

It is transphobic. Own it - or be more open to discussion anyone who does not share the party line.

Waitwhat23 · 08/02/2025 18:08

Theeyeballsinthesky · 08/02/2025 17:30

lol it’s just an evolution of “everything is transphobic”

Everyone and everything!

a) It would be helpful if you'd put forward your definitions, please.
b) Seriously, "mainly"?

The dog house?
Cat litter?
Sporners' corner?
TV Chat?
Style & Beauty?
Cost of living?
Legal matters?
Property & DIY?
Elderly parents?
End of life illness?
etc. etc.

FWR is pro-women.

fempiricist · 08/02/2025 18:10

I have to say that on the occasions I've seen where trans and nonbinary people share their opinions on a relevant thread, the reception hasn't been overtly transphobic- to avoid the moderation, I feel- but it's certainly been frosty. It usually descends into derailing as people ask personal questions to the trans poster instead of replying to their relevant points or responding to the OP.

So, it's not explicitly transphobic, as a whole. But I also wouldn't advise a trans person to openly post on here, as others have said.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/02/2025 18:12

@StickItInTheFamilyAlbum Think it's common knowledge that the litter tray is notoriously transphobic and you can't move in the gardening section for anti trans rhetoric.

tigger1001 · 08/02/2025 18:12

I suppose it depends on what definition of transphobic you use.

Wanting single sex spaces isn't transphobic.

Many people here don't consider themselves to have gender identities that match their sex. Do you consider such people to be trans? Or do you think the trans umbrella should exclude them?
