This is why so many women voted Trump

I’m not saying it’s right, I’m not saying it’s worth the horrors of the Trump administration (and what other women’s rights will be abolished). However, I can also empathise. Books like this are everywhere in baby sections of bookshops in USA. My american friend is naturally more conservative than myself although hated Trump and didn’t vote for him previously (she abstained and then she went Biden although she says she seriously regrets) and this time she voted Trump. She said this stuff is now everywhere and it’s constant. She also showed me a baby’s ABC book which included B for bisexual (and literally then described it as people who are sexually attracted to either gender). For babies.

They did.

It's the woke bullshit that drives people to vote Trump. Given that he's the only alternative, people will vote for him despite his personal failings purely because voting Democrats will bring about more fucking lunacy.

Trump is also quite funny, which helps.

Absolutely this.

Kostantin Kisin has done a 10 reasons why thing on Twitter - have to say he gets into the American mindset and makes some really relevant points.

Much of it is about illegal immigration. Also cost of living under Biden (which was probably mostly post pandemic/ Ukraine). Also Israel. The us is a very different culture to the UK and Europe.

We do tend to project European / British ideals and ideas onto US politics. It a very different country and people's

They really are different mindset wise.

Food cost, fuel costs have risen enormously. Someone on MN compared our shopping to theirs. It's more expensive these days, ditto fuel prices.

Immigration is another huge issue. One Latino was interviewed saying our wages have finally improved, still not great, but better. They don't want new immigrants working for peanuts, living in camps with no overheads. Charities picking up the slack.

nauticant · 08/11/2024 13:14

That's an example where identity politics served the Democrats badly. This idea that being "soft" on illegal immigration would be supported by Hispanics, even those in the third, fourth, fifth generations. In other words, "you lot with a common charactistic, you all go in this box".

They voted for Trump because he had policies on immigrants and the economy, most people really don’t give this stuff headroom, I’m sorry!

Everyone will say that they voted for Trump because of immigration or economic concerns because it's still less controversial than admitting that you are uncomfortable with 'woke' ideology. No one wants to be cancelled. This is the same reason why the polls would never have predicted a decisive win for Trump. People will say whatever they think the pollsters want to hear which may, or may not, reflect their actual views.

I was listening to a talk from a woman who was looking at all the periods of transient madness in history. Super interesting! I had no idea about it previously. Like contagious vagrancy, mass hysteria and multiple personality disorder. Whilst all became suddenly widespread and common in different eras and practically non existent now. I think this trans issue is the same. It’s going to take a hundred years or so until they can look back and say that.

What’s most fascinating is that these illnesses are real. People genuinely had these problems. But it was a societal contagion. So fascinating. I wonder what it is about a person that makes them susceptible to something like this. Or maybe it could happen to anyone if they are surrounded by the right triggers.

The closest thing I've seen to it - historically - is the "Glass delusion"

Its fascinating

I think wokeness for many is well down the wish list.

That's why the "Kamala Is For They/Them. President Trump Is For You." slogan is so effective.

'Them' is any of the 'others' you would rather your tax dollars don't get wasted on and 'you' is all the hard-working people like you.

It doesn't alienate anyone by explicitly stating who 'them' and 'us' are.

If it had been "Kamala Is For Them. President Trump Is For You", I might agree with you.

But "They/Them" is a specific reference to non-binary identity, and then by extension to gender ideology in general.

Interesting

That's interesting.

That whole philosophy about meritocracy, winning if you work hard, and celebrating success is going to be massively at odds with the self victimisation and cries of oppression of gender ideology.

Not feeling 'safe' around different opinions, needing comfort pets and language to be mangled in order to validate someone's (erroneous) self image I'm guessing isn't what's going to be 'making America great' again, any time soon

It's bloody genius, whoever came up with it

Why might 'trans issues' barely feature in the exit polls?

I think a very big reason that would not feature is a reluctance to speak about it for fear of being deemed a bigot.

After all that is the narrative that has been pushed by the Democrats. Women have been silenced for 'wrong think'.

It's more that whilst being gutted that women's rights are being trashed, there is a glimmer of a silver lining in that more US gay and autistic children may receive some protection from having the gay transed away.

"the gay transed away"

What the hell does that mean??

Anyway I happen to remember when Hilary lost to Trump- feminist communities were straight up outraged and upset. But now trans people are for some reason at the top of British feminism's agenda Trump is now the good guy?

Mmmm I don't think anyone has said that Trump is a good guy.

But then I'm not sure facts are your thing.

It's straight out of Black Mirror. I was always a 'leftie' and I started wondering what had changed. Had I just become right wing?

No. I haven't changed. It's just that self-identifying as a leftie now means swallowing this absolute horseshit. Meanwhile people can describe me as right wing or a Nazi or whatever the fuck they want but I'm staying here on Sanity Island thanks.

I share your friend's disgust.

Is it worth the rollback on women’s reproductive rights though?

You'd have to ask the Americans that.

Xiaoxiong · 08/11/2024 14:01

@Christinapple what part of "being gutted that women's rights are being trashed" sounds like UK feminists thinking that Trump is the good guy.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Agreeing with Trump on this issue doesn't mean he's right on anything else.

And the phrase "trans away the gay" is a reference to the fact that many children who are saying they're trans, particularly girls, are likely to be same-sex attracted and are being brought to gender clinics because of deep rooted homophobia (see: Susie Green of Mermaid's TED talk). GIDS clinicians at the Tavistock even joked about the fact that there wouldn't be any gays and lesbians left after they'd all been transed.

Of course not that’s why the election result is not principally about trans no matter how much people want to it be. There are simply not enough people who care about about trans for it to be a decisive election swinger. The issue mainly affects women, same with abortion. Not enough people care about that either.

Mirabai · 08/11/2024 14:05

By which I mean if general voters cared enough about women to oppose trans agenda they would also oppose loss of abortion rights.

nauticant · 08/11/2024 14:06

Reading this thread bring this short quote to mind:

Chersfrozenface · 08/11/2024 14:06

At the same time as the Presidential election (and others) there were ballots on abortion rights in 10 states - and the measures passed in 7 of them.

Including Arizona, Missouri, Nevada and Montana, which Trump won.

justasking111 · 08/11/2024 14:06

Husband follows some American fishing thing on Instagram, which swerves into politics sometimes, 2nd amendment etc.

One he showed me was a school where the parents wanted certain books banned. The school council threatened the parents with all sorts including expulsion. One mother calmly stood up asking if she may read to them one of the books. They agreed.

She began to read the story, there was uproar from the council demanding that she stop quoting pornographic stuff.

It was an interesting video.

nauticant · 08/11/2024 14:08

There's a fair few of those videos. Most definitely not an isolated incident.

IIRC that scenario happened here in Scotland too. John Swinney (before being FM obv) had books read out to him in the school curriculum that parents objected too. It was eye opening. I can't remember where I saw the video, perhaps via a FB group or page. I'll try and find it.
