As if their stance on refusing to safeguard their female staff wasn’t bad enough - they seriously have to be taking the piss now with this.

No actual female models available?

Absolutely 💯 thank you.

The ad as a stand alone although pretty bloody grim isn’t the issue, it’s the long running pattern of JL that bastion of the middle aged middle class woman being absolutely captured and treating its core audience with utter contempt..

They might as well have their Christmas ad with a mob of TRA’s holding up signs saying ‘Fuck you grandma it’s all about the men now’

I used to work for JLP. Their motto, and company ethos, was "Goodwill is Gold-dust" and we were expected to live up to this in all our interactions with the public.

At this point in the gender ideology/critical situation, a few brave and stunning women (Maya, Alison, Jo etc.) have risked a lot; and a lot of the rest of us have crowdfunded them solidly to uphold women's rights against TRA onslaughts.

JLP are certainly not extending goodwill to the (large) percentage of their clientele who are gender critical, with ads such as this and the brat-boy one which, in the current climate, are a political provocation bordering on misogyny. After all the tribunal judgements, Cass, censure of Mermaids etc, you think they'd read the room.

JLP are now the last place I would go to shop - if I can get an item somewhere else, I will.

Beowulfa · 30/10/2024 10:28

When a friend of mine was an Art College student she sent me the most Art College Christmas card ever; a pink furry upside down fir tree on a turquoise background. Like Christmas, but shit.

Perhaps JL are saving money by asking local Art College kids to do their advertising now?

Chersfrozenface · 30/10/2024 10:29

I think that's a FC image not a JL one.

This is the image of the dress on the FC website.

And once again, this is the image on the main JL shopping site.

What's the matter with it?

You really have to ask 🤔

Bella is the replacement dog. Head of the family was going to be Benji, but there was an unfortunate incident with Benji and the turkey.

The poussin has valiantly stepped into the turkey role in the hope that no one would notice the glaring fact it's not a bloody turkey!

Edited

Well, that explains it then! x

These images make that dress look great.

And look completely different to the Christmas tree pic.

Maybe the Christmas tree image is supposed to be from the view of someone on the floor?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 30/10/2024 11:06

tbh - ever since Andy Street left in 2017, John Lewis has gone downhill. Even their Xmas tv adverts are rubbish now.

My 63 year old mum has recently retired from working in a JL lingerie dept.

I might suggest she does an AMA, the bullshit she's dealt with.

Please do

Assuming it is a male and not an androgynous female...

As long as they don't say they're a woman I don't give a shit how they dress, whether they're advertising something or just walking down the street. 100% for breaking down gender stereotypes.

MimiGC · 30/10/2024 11:17

Did they pay a professional photographer for that shot?! It's from a peculiar angle, showing a tiny head and massive feet - unflattering in every way.

0% for actually producing dresses tailored for male bodies. Now that would be ground-breaking.

Odd that JLP would promote an image of a man breaching gender norms but their men's clothing department is so old-male-norm stodgy and conservative.

I would wonder why the edgy marketing folk aren't pushing for changes in the men's spaces, rather than pushing men's bodies into women's clothing if I hadn't been paying attention to TRA activism.

borntobequiet · 30/10/2024 14:48

The trouble is that the edgy marketing folk are in reality devoid of initiative or imagination, which is why what they think is edgy and different is just the same old shit.
The more glamorous among them get jobs designing couture perfume ads for Christmas, which are similarly shit, just with champagne and jewellery in swish hotels.

white socks with black shoes? FFS-no wonder this country is going to the dogs.

Is that you, Serial Mom? 😄

Is it past Labour Day already?

Is John Lewis “edgy”? We haven’t got one so I’ve never been in one but I don’t think that’s a word that springs to mind when I think of them.

TwistedWonder · 30/10/2024 09:35

No one finds it hard to understand. That point been discussed several times up thread as to what the issue with John Lewis is

I didn’t mean the John Lewis issue. My response was to a message posted by someone else.

People do find it hard. There is a massive issue with the whole girls all have long hair, wear pink, be princesses etc. Just go and look at children’s things in any shop. It’s absolutely awful.

Look at the amount of children who are told they’re trans when they’re not because they like “boy things” or “girl things”. The fact some people use the phrases “girl mode”. WTAF.

Chersfrozenface · 30/10/2024 09:33

It's only done the job if people spend money buying stuff at JL shops or on its website.

Talking about it on its own contributes nothing to JL's bottom line.

Talking about it and associated behaviour at JL which puts people off shopping with the store actually has a negative effect.

Ask Gerald Ratner.

Interesting how a few other people have commented the same as I did. I hope they read this reply too. Consider me told.

Helleofabore · 30/10/2024 18:02

Yes. If the gauge of 'success' for John Lewis is direct return on the investment of the ad through sales, just 'getting people talking' has to be considered a fail. It needs to drive people into store to buy product.

If the objective of the ad is to raise awareness of either John Lewis or their policies, then us 'talking about it' could be considered part of its success in achieving that objective. Sometimes corporations will use both to analyse whether a specific campaign has achieved the set objectives. I would imagine though that at this time, John Lewis needs more sales uplift than they need good PR. And if they needed good PR after the negative discussion about its female single sex space failures, then this ad would not really seem to be the mechanic to achieve that in my opinion.

On Twitter people have said that this is the female model Iris Strubegger.

What a shame the photographer or director or make up artist (I’m not familiar with who has the overall say on these things) made her look like a bloke. Other professional photographers (etc) have taken lovely photos of her.

I am not convinced. It could be the perspective issue but this model’s head seems a different shape, along with forehead angle and lip line. I am very happy to be convinced though. I don’t think these are photos that make the clothes look their best either way.

YesterdaysFuture · 30/10/2024 19:39

On Twitter people have said that this is the female model Iris Strubegger.

It isn't. It is however a female model. I'm not giving her name as I can't think of anything more vile for her than reading the absolutely horrific comments on this thread and I'm sure some arsehole will tag her on social media.

She is a woman, just doing her job. I cannot imagine how it must feel for her to read the nasty, vitriolic bile spouted about her looks. You might hate the pic, the pose, the dress - but none of those things were her decision. She will have just turned up for work like most of you did today. Only you don't have to read hundreds of comments from other women calling you ugly.

This thread is revolting

IDontHateRainbows · 30/10/2024 21:21

I don't think Iris is ugly. She's also 40 so we can at least handclap JL for using an older model and not some strung out 16 year old.

Snowypeaks · 30/10/2024 21:24

It's definitely not Iris Strubegger, who is stunning but I haven't seen any evidence of her working as a fashion model after about 2017.

JanesLittleGirl · 30/10/2024 22:18

The only message that I get from the image is "This dress is horrible. You will look horrible if you wear it. Do not buy this dress!"
